In addition, the setting in /etc/rc.conf that can enable this functionality does not mention its magical powers for this. I suggest the following, more or less, based on the -stable man pages. halt/reboot/etc: -p The system will turn off the power if it can. This is of course likely to make reboot rather similar to halt. See shutdown(8) for more details. shutdown: (This probably needs to be reworded to reflect reality, rather than my warped vision thereof) -p The system is halted and the power is turned off (hardware sup- port required) at the specified time. In order for this to succeed, the hardware support must be complemented by enabling apm(8) (apm -e enable), which is easiest done at boot time by setting apm_enable="YES" in /etc/rc.conf. And then in /etc/defaults/rc.conf itself: apm_enable="NO" # Set to YES to enable APM BIOS functions (or NO). # This is needed to make `shutdown -p' work. Alternatively, if a single line is a goal: apm_enable="NO" # Enable APM BIOS functions (`shutdown -p' needs this) Of course, if what I've written is *not* true, then I'd like to know just what the reality really is... thanks barry bouwsma To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Sun Dec 30 18:27: 5 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from dastardly.newsbastards.org.72.27.172.IN-addr.ARPA.NetScum.dyndns.dk (pop-mu-8-2-dialup-99.freesurf.ch [194.230.141.99]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BE15937B417; Sun, 30 Dec 2001 18:26:47 -0800 (PST) Received: from beerswilling.netscum.dyndns.dk (dcf77-zeit.netscum.dyndns.dk [172.27.72.27]) by dastardly.newsbastards.org.72.27.172.IN-addr.ARPA.NetScum.dyndns.dk (8.11.6/8.11.6) with ESMTP id fBV20hi00258 (using TLSv1/SSLv3 with cipher EDH-RSA-DES-CBC3-SHA (168 bits) verified FAIL); Mon, 31 Dec 2001 03:00:44 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from bounce@netscum.dyndns.dk) Received: (from root@localhost) by beerswilling.netscum.dyndns.dk (8.11.6/8.11.6) id fBV20hb00257; Mon, 31 Dec 2001 03:00:43 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from bounce@netscum.dyndns.dk) Date: Mon, 31 Dec 2001 03:00:43 +0100 (CET) Message-Id: <200112310200.fBV20hb00257@beerswilling.netscum.dyndns.dk> From: BOUWSMA Beery To: freebsd-hackers@freebsd.org, freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: newfs and the -b/-f default values Organization: Men not wearing any pants that dont shave X-Hacked: via telnet to your port 25, what else? I think I know what's happening. That partition I tried to newfs already had fsize and bsize in the disklabel, and those values were (re)used. Another partition I re-newfs'ed had zero in the disklabel, though they had been earlier newfs'ed with the old defaults, so when I tried to newfs this one, I got the new defaults instead, as promised by the man page. > So, is there a good reason why the -stable and -current man pages > for newfs do not seem to match the reality of what the program does? I think the man pages need to be enhanced to make mention of what happens with non-zero disklabel values. In rereading the man pages in both -stable and -current, I got no obvious hint that this made any difference. I probably should have known better, but... In particular, I'd suggest wording similar to what follows, to make this more clear: -b block-size The block size of the file system, in bytes. It must be a power of 2. The default size is 16384 bytes, and the smallest allow- able size is 4096 bytes. If the disklabel contains a non-zero bsize, that value will be used unless a different value is explicitly specified. The optimal block:fragment ratio is 8:1. Other ratios are possible, but are not recommended, and may produce unpredictable results. [...] -f frag-size The fragment size of the file system in bytes. It must be a power of two ranging in value between blocksize/8 and blocksize. The default is 2048 bytes. If the disklabel contains a non- zero fsize, that value will be used unless a different value is specified. [...] (From the -current man page for newfs: ) EXAMPLES newfs /dev/ad3s1a Creates a new ufs file system on ad3s1a. If the disklabel values for bsize and fsize are zero, newfs will use a block size of 16384 bytes, a fragment size of 2048 bytes and the largest possible number of cylinders per group. These values tend to produce better performance for most applications than the historical defaults (8192 byte block size and 1024 byte fragment size). This large fragment size may lead to large amounts of wasted space on filesystems that contain a large number of small files. Otherwise, newfs will use the existing disklabel values of bsize and fsize for the block size and fragment size respectively. Assuming that this does reflect reality. I'm sure someone with a much better grip on the english language than I can state it far more succinctly, just as someone with a much better grip on newfs than I could far more accurately describe reality. thanks barry bouwsma To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Sun Dec 30 18:52:20 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from pittgoth.com (14.zlnp1.xdsl.nauticom.net [209.195.149.111]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7DA7137B436 for ; Sun, 30 Dec 2001 18:52:18 -0800 (PST) Received: from pittgoth.com (zbay3-149.fyi.net [206.80.157.149]) by pittgoth.com (8.11.6/8.11.6) with ESMTP id fBV2qxD03748; Sun, 30 Dec 2001 21:53:00 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from darklogik@pittgoth.com) Message-ID: <3C2FD3B3.5000905@pittgoth.com> Date: Sun, 30 Dec 2001 21:55:47 -0500 From: Tom Rhodes User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:0.9.2) Gecko/20010628 X-Accept-Language: en-us MIME-Version: 1.0 To: aaron Cc: Freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: IPv6 handbook entry References: <200112292132.fBTLWOm15469@meta.lo-res.org> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org aaron wrote: >Dear doc team, > > I am currently preparing a chapter on IPv6 for the handbook. >A draft version is available on http://www.biterror.net/fbsd/ipv6.html . > >Please take a look at it. Currently it is in a pre-release because I would like comments on it, what to add what to take away, etc. This article was written more for a "semi-experianced" FreeBSD user and not really the "newbie" as I belive most new users would in fact, purchase a new release. Comments/Suggestions/Fixes/Moral Support: :-) 1) It would be good if you had an 'intro' section which layed out information on what an a.out and an ELF (Executable and Linkable Format) are and a bit of goodies and badies about them. 2) I think a CTM method should also be added, but this is only my opinion.. If others think that it is not neccessary then we can ignore that. 3) You could point out a link to the 'cdrtools' port so it is easier to navigate through the article to the port, if the user hasn't installed it. 4) The term 'bios' should be technically 'BIOS' an should be marked up with an tag. This will also make it stand out. All should be marked up.. :-) (sorry for the bluntness) 5) Should the term in section 2 be 'presuming' or 'assuming'? I am not sure. 6) You should also markup the command dd(1) to : &man.dd.1; 7) I think it would be also good if you had given a pointer to the /usr/share/examples/cvsup/. This would let users just grab the file and modify it to point to their mirrors or whatever. 8) The 'base (Files at the top of/usr/src' in section 3.1.1 needs a closing bracket. 9) You could also outline a techqnique that people can just link up there /usr/src directory to a different partition on a different drive, if they are running low on space for /usr partition and have a partition which has enough space for the /usr/obj and /usr/src partitions. 10) References to cvsup should be marked with either tag or the &man..
; entity. 11) All references to 'cvsup' should be changed to CVSup for technical and techno-grammatic reasons. :-) thats about it.. I found a couple of spelling errors and grammar errors, but it is way too tedious to outline them in this mail... I think it would be good if you pass me the SGML file for this article, I can quickly make the patches and send them back to you... let me know.. thanks, regards, =Hiten = ===== SSH Fingerprint: 1024 45:a5:9c:f2:fb:07:da:70:18:02:0b:f3:63:f1:7a:a6 hitenp@hpdi.ath.cx __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? These represent problem reports covering all versions including experimental development code and obsolete releases. Bugs can be in one of several states: o - open A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed. a - analyzed The report has been examined by a team member and evaluated. f - feedback The problem has been solved, and the originator has been given a patch or a fix has been committed. The PR remains in this state pending a response from the originator. s - suspended The problem is not being worked on. This is a prime candidate for somebody who is looking for a project to do. If the problem cannot be solved at all, it will be closed, rather than suspended. c - closed A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated, documented, and tested. I think it would be best to just have one section that talks about floppy disk media in general. Also, there is no need to tar/gzip a single patch like this. I think it would be easiest to just include the patch as plain text without uuencoding it or compressing it. Can you come up with another patch that combines your floppy section with the existing floppy section? Sorry I didn't commit this earlier. As you could probably tell, I save the entire text of the PR into a single file usually, and then just apply the whole PR to patch so that I can then use diff to review the diff in the format that I prefer. In this case, both of your diffs were applied in a single pass so I didn't notice at first that there were two separate patches. I didn't fully apply your whitespace diff, because in general I don't think it was really necessary. We don't need to re-wrap the paragraphs after every commit, just when things really begin to get uncouth. r1.32 has your changes. As usual, the website will lag behind the commit by some number of hours.
