FreeBSD seems to crash whenever it's about to probe my second CD drive. My setup is like this: Primary IDE -> Maxtor 20GB harddisk, UDMA66 (with appropriate cable) Secondary IDE -> Philips 40x CD-ROM (Master) and HP CD-Writer 9100e (Slave). FreeBSD detects my Maxtor drive and my Philips drive, but it crashes after it found the Philips drive. Verbose boot says it's enabling PIO mode on ata1-slave, but nothing after that happends. It does not matter if I boot from my harddisk or the FreeBSD CD-ROM. FreeBSD 4.2 and 4.3 behave exactly the same. Can someone please help me? Apparently this chipset is used by a few OEM such as ASUS, Startech etc. These are dirt-cheap ultra-wide scsi cards and while I am sure they don't offer the same performance as an adaptec or other brand name, they are sufficient for some uses. Any idea on what I could do to get this working ? I need that to connect a HP DLT to one of my machines. Patrick. I've got a 15-tape Ecrix changer that seems to work fine. at scbus0 target 1 lun 0 (pass0,sa0) at scbus0 target 3 lun 0 (pass1,ch0) at scbus1 target 0 lun 0 (pass2,da0) at scbus1 target 6 lun 0 (ses0,pass3,pt0) I haven't used it much (2-3 backups so far), but I haven't seen any problems so far with it. It works with the stock ch(4) driver and chio(1). I'd like to replace the Linux partitition with a FreeBSD installation. What is the easiest way to do this? I first installed w2k, then Linux, then used dd to peel the bootsector from my Linux-root-Partition, and then added this to c:\boot.ini. Could I just install FreeBSD on the Linux partition, then boot into FreeBSD, and copy /boot/boot0 over to w2k and then add this to c:\boot.ini? Or, is there a better way? As I can see by vendor id it is 'ste' driver (/usr/src/sys/pci/if_ste*), but when I'm just adding similar to 550TX card's lines for 538TX I had my card detected but not working. maybe there is another solution to make it work? Has anyone been able to get the newer Promise Ultra 100 TX2 (66 MHz) cards to work in 4.3? When I tried, it said there was an "unrecognized PCI device" or some such. =20 I am currently using an older model of the same card (Promise Ultra 100) and it works great... just hoping to add a couple more soon. (Is it even possible to have four IDE controllers in one machine, including the one on board? This is a large volume/low importance file server.) Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks. Oh, and to the guy with the D-Link 538TX, if you read this... I've had nothing but problems with these cards, regardless of operating system. It seems like D-Link has moved away from the RealTek 8139 chipset with this model... In Windows [same pc's same cards] I can play mp3's from one pc on another pc. Transfering a 30MB file takes about 20 seconds. Win95 is running netbios/netbuie/ tcp/ip / spx/ipx Now when I boot one of them into freebsd, using the dc0 driver the card runs at 100baseTX. Transfering same file from FreeBSD to windows takes anywhere from 60 - 200 seconds [not other network traffic] and I get lots of collision. I boot both pc's into FreeBSD [4.3-Stable], same speed issues. Trying to play mp3's from one box on another, they still skip as the transfer rate cannot keep up. I also get more collision then I should on the linksys hub [all this came in the FENSK05 home networking kit from linksys] Transferring a 30MB file from FreeBSD to FreeBSD still takes longer than it should [usually over 2 minutes, I've hit 359seconds some times.] Does anyone know if there are issues with these cards and freebsd? Is anyone running these with good performance, or does everyone's MP3's skip while playing them remotely over Samba or NFS? Before I go buy new cards, I would like to make sure that these cards really do suck and I should use 3com/Intel. Is there any other settings I can check? What other issues can there be? Transfer rates are usually less than 100 Kbytes/sec. I am basing that they run slow because it takes long to ftp transfer files between pc's and because mp3's skip while playing them remotely [as in windows none of this happens] pcs are -- Dual booting win95 and FreeBSD -- 233mmx with 48 / 32 MB of RAM. --Fortune-- Real Users find the one combination of bizarre input values that shuts down the system for days. --- www.nul.cjb.net --- The Power to Crash! --- www.FreeBSD.org --- The Power to Serve!
