A common mistake is to push all traffic from a bridged segment into a dummynet pipe, with the result that all the background traffi saturates your pipe and gives the symptoms you mention. To tell more i'd have to know a bit more on how you use the firewall (is this a bridge or router), your config, your pipe setting, and last not least the FreeBSD version you are using (there are known bugs with some). cheers luigi > -Trish > > __ > > Trish Lynch > FreeBSD - The Power to Serve trish@bsdunix.net > New England Area BSD Users Group trish@neabug.org > Listar Core Committee www.listar.org > List Mistress BDSM Community List Project trish@listmistress.org > MommaBear @ IRC AilleCat @ Slashdot MommaBearTrish @ AIM > http://www.advogato.com/person/AilleCat/ > --- > > "You come out at night, thats when the energy comes, > and the dark side's light, and the vampires roam. > You strut your rasta wear, and your suicide poem > and a cross from a faith, that died, before Jesus came. > You're building a mystery." > -Sarah McLachlan, "Building a Mystery" > > > To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org > with "unsubscribe freebsd-ipfw" in the body of the message > To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-ipfw" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-ipfw Mon May 7 13:46:13 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-ipfw@freebsd.org Received: from superconductor.rush.net (superconductor.rush.net [208.9.155.8]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 884B237B422 for ; Mon, 7 May 2001 13:46:04 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from trish@listmistress.org) Received: from localhost (trish@localhost) by superconductor.rush.net (8.11.2/8.11.2) with ESMTP id f47Kjnr16020; Mon, 7 May 2001 16:45:50 -0400 (EDT) Date: Mon, 7 May 2001 16:45:48 -0400 (EDT) From: Momma Bear Trish X-Sender: trish@superconductor.rush.net To: Luigi Rizzo Cc: freebsd-ipfw@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: dummynet issues In-Reply-To: <200105071908.VAA01496@info.iet.unipi.it> Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-ipfw@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG On Mon, 7 May 2001, Luigi Rizzo wrote: > there are many things which can go wrong. Firstly, VNC is not secure. You didn't say if you are VNCing to a unix or windoze box. VNC to unix: http://www.zip.com.au/~cs/answers/vnc-thru-firewall-via-ssh.txt This gives a great description of the protocol and how to secure it. Maybe ssh compression will help your limited upload issue. VNC to windows: I'm not entirely sure about this, but to allow VNC connections our of our LAN to external hosts I had a rule like the following, and it worked: ${fwcmd} add pass tcp from any ${unpriv} to any 5900 setup where: unpriv="1024-65535" Hope this helps, Dave -----Original Message----- From: owner-freebsd-ipfw@FreeBSD.ORG [mailto:owner-freebsd- ipfw@FreeBSD.ORG]On Behalf Of Wouter Cuypers Sent: Saturday, 28 April 2001 10:45 To: ipfw@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: VNC howto Hi, How do I get VNC throught my ipfw firewall ? Is this a secure connection ? I have tried VNC on the internal LAN but I'm a little curious about the performance over the internet. My upload is limited to 16kb/s, will this be enough or just frustrating ? I'm trying to use dummynet and I've obtained the PicoBSD floppy image with BSD and dummynet, ipfw etc. on it from Luigi Rizzo's dummynet website. Since I've never adminstered/setup a BSD system before I was wondering what else I must do to get it up and running. I know I got to set up the IP address for it (using dhclient?). Is there anything else I must do? Any info/help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-ipfw" in the body of the message
