Bought it some two months ago and got it working rather quickly. Two things I'v not yet figured out though, I can use only one PCMCIA slot at a time and the whole thing freezes when I insert/remove a PCMCIA card while running. I've seen something about those somewhere in the mailing lists but didn't have the time to go looking for it. I'm running FreeBSD-stable which I keep up to date weekly and use XFree-4.2.0. BTW. The 1.2GHz CPU is *very* fast and the 1600x1200 TFT screen is very cool! Machine A always works correctly. Machine B works correctly when running FreeBSD 4.6, but when it's running XP with the MA401 driver (which, perversely enough does not do the "new" Windows XP 802.11b thing), it only works correctly with WEP disabled. It *used* to work ok with a "real" access point (a Linksys), and it works fine under FreeBSD, but there's something that is keeping the Netgear Windows driver from negotiating any sort of WEP (64 or 128 bit) with a hostap mode. For what it's worth, I tried applying the most recent -current diffs. No help. The configurator help>about lists the config utility as 4.06.4.7 (jan 12, 2001), the driver at 0.29.4 (Apr 3, 2001), and the NIC firmware as 00.08.03.00 (ID:S10008C3). I've found out this means there is a problem in I/O ports. So I gather a likely culprit must be the address indicated in the kernel config file. I have: device pcm device sbc0 at isa? port 0x220 irq 5 drq 1 flags 0x15 which then booted gives: dmesg |grep sb sbc0: at port 0x220-0x22f irq 5 drq 1 flags 0x15 on isa0 pcm0: on sbc0. Since I know next to nothing about hardware and the "dark side" of computing (I'm more of a PowerPPC user, who just recently got my hands on a second hand Sharp Mebuis PC-PJ1, who gave me some problems at install, but I got to learn a few things about FreeBSD in the process which is why I installed it in the first place), I'm a bit at a loss here. I've looked in the windows system configuration for clues, and the sound card is reported as using these I/O ports: 0530-0537; 0388-038B, 0220-022F, DMA 01, DMA 03 and IRQ 05. But when I candidly tried to add these other ports to the kernel config (in the form of: port 0x220, 0x530,0x388), I've got a parse error. What can I do, or what is the proper syntax to indicate those other ports? Are they of importance in the first place? thanks Cyril To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-mobile Wed Jun 26 4:37:40 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from www.innerdot.com (dsl027-191-039.sfo1.dsl.speakeasy.net [216.27.191.39]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 61C5037B408 for ; Wed, 26 Jun 2002 04:37:30 -0700 (PDT) Received: by www.innerdot.com (Postfix, from userid 1001) id 6A579AB86; Wed, 26 Jun 2002 04:36:05 -0700 (PDT) To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Subject: IBM T21 & modem options Message-Id: <20020626113605.6A579AB86@www.innerdot.com> Date: Wed, 26 Jun 2002 04:36:05 -0700 (PDT) From: jims@innerdot.com (Jim Spring) Sender: owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Greetings, I have been following the list on and off through the archives and have been trying to find a concrete answer to a couple of questions, but have really only found bits and pieces. I've got an IBM T21 with the 3Com NIC/Modem combo mini-pci card. The NIC works fine, however the modem is seen in pciconf -lv output, but I am unable to configure and/or use it. Now, I am having ot bounce between windows and freebsd (windows to check things online), so my searches may be a bit sporadic, but am I wrong in understanding that the NIC/Modem combo can not made to work with both the NIC and the modem? The NIC works fine. Is the modem a winmodem? I've tried using the ltmdm port, but to no avail. The information pciconf puts out for the card is: none0@pci0:3:0: class=0x020000 card=0x635610b7 chip=0x605610b7 rev=0x20 hdr=0x00 vendor = '3COM Corp, Networking Division' device = '3C556 10/100 Mini PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter' class = network subclass = ethernet none1@pci0:3:1: class=0x078000 card=0x615910b7 chip=0x100710b7 rev=0x20 hdr=0x00 vendor = '3COM Corp, Networking Division' device = '3C556 V.90 Mini-PCI Modem' class = simple comms Has anyone had this combination working? I'm using 4.6-stable, from about 19 June. In order to see if I could get another modem to work, I procured a 'Typhoon Quick Com 56 CL' which claims to use the Lucent Chipset, but I don't know specifically which one. This modem is a pccard. When inserted into the machine, first off it is not recognized in pciconf. The dmesg entry I receive is: wder# pccard: card inserted, slot 0 Jun 26 00:59:09 chowder pccardd[54]: Card "LT WIN MODEM"("PC card") [] [] has fu nction ID 2 sio5 at port 0x2f8-0x2ff irq 11 flags 0x40000 slot 0 on pccard0 sio5: type 16450 sio5: unable to activate interrupt in fast mode - using normal mode Jun 26 00:59:24 chowder pccardd[54]: sio5: GENERIC PCMCIA modem inserted. So, the kernel is recognizing the the modem at sio5. However, when I attempt to use it, the system hangs (trying to use tip) or reports the device as not being configured. I suspect both may have to do with the kernelconfig, which I am mucking with at the moment, but given the kernel is recognizing it, should I hope for it to work? Any thoughts or comments would be helpful. I'm back to trying to get FreeBSD going on my Sony VAIO GR300, and so far I'm having pretty good luck. Expect for one weird little thing. Currently, I'm trying to get Xfree86 running with dual-head. Everything works fine if I start X with the external monitor disconnected. If I start X with the monitor connected, then the LCD shows a weird constantly changing black and white gradient goo sort of thing (it's hard to describe,) and the CRT shows nothing. If I start X, then connect the monitor, it just mirrors the screen from the LCD. Any ideas? This is with the Sony docking station for the GR300. I havn't tried it with the monitor connected directly to the laptop, but I don't think it should make a difference (and I want it working with the dock.) Attached is my XF86Config. Feel free to laugh at it and tell me what I'm doing horribly wrong. --=20 Chip Marshall http://www.chocobo.cx/chip/ GCM/CS d+(-) s+:++ a20>? I have a DWL-650 and it cannot transmit even the most modest size files without freezing. I looked into the problem and I'm convinced there is some sort of bug in device (or its firmware). I moved that card to a machine I don't use much and haven't given it much thought. Indeed, I could reproduce the problem on two different Toshiba Satellite models, in addition to my Dell Inspiron. Something seems seriously broken in wi(4), at least with the D-Link DWL-650 card. > Good luck! The problem goes away turning WEP off. Perhaps a wi(4) expert may find a workaround in the future. I just have a few issues I'm trying to work out and not having much luck with. 1) moused with jogdial doesn't seem to want to map the buttons. I tried doing a -m 1=3D3 (so that I don't have to do 1+2 for 3 with the touchpad) but it doesn't seem to have any effect in X, it just makes the button stop working all together. 2) APM isn't working right. dmesg shows that apm was detected, and I can do an apm -e 1 to make it say 'APM Management: Enabled', but none of the values ever show anything useful. It always says it's on AC power and everything else is unknown. I figure this one is an APM/ACPI issue. I know most people say to disable ACPI, and I tried that with my old GR300. However after doing that, it would often refuse to power on at all. Other people in a VAIO help forum said to leave ACPI on to fix it. 3) Is it possible to change X layouts on the fly? I have two layouts specified, one for dual head and one with just LCD. It would be nice to be able to change the layout without exiting X. That's about it. On the whole, I'm very happy with FreeBSD on my laptop. I know I probably can't get audio on this model, but that's not a big deal for me. I am somewhat interested in finding out what else I can do with the spic driver though. MAKEDEV doesn't seem to have an option to create a spic interface, just the jogdial, but I might be missing something. I was led to believe there would be an ioctl interface to it as well for controlling other functions, like the LCD brightness. --=20 Chip Marshall http://www.chocobo.cx/chip/ GCM/CS d+(-) s+:++ a20>? I've been running this on -stable. It compiles in -current and I don't see why it wouldn't work there. However, my laptop doesn't like to suspend and resume very well in -current so it's hard to test there. Also it's a bit of a hack and I was wondering if you as the sound guy had any objections. It better then the now when sound is dead after a resume and needs either a kldunload/kldload cycle or worse a power cycle. I currently use a linksys WPC-11 but was thinking about looking around for one with an external antenna connector. I'd really like to play around with a Pringles can! :) Also are there any cheaper GPS solutions that the airtools like? I saw the GPS available for the Handspring, but I doubt it communicates through the cradle, and I doubt even more the airtools would get along with it. I'd rather not spend an arm and a leg to play around a little, but it's just so nifty. I'm going to check out my dad's GPS this weekend. He's really into hiking and not so much for computers, but I'm sure he'd let me borrow it temporarily. I don't remembed it having any external ports though... oh well. thanks in advance for any answers, -mark To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-mobile Fri Jun 28 4:10:48 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.FreeBSD.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1D71437B400 for ; Fri, 28 Jun 2002 04:10:43 -0700 (PDT) Received: from pcwin002.win.tue.nl (pcwin002.win.tue.nl [131.155.71.72]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2AC0743E06 for ; Fri, 28 Jun 2002 04:10:42 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from stijn@pcwin002.win.tue.nl) Received: from pcwin002.win.tue.nl (orb_rules@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by pcwin002.win.tue.nl (8.12.4/8.12.3) with ESMTP id g5SBAeUR065269; Fri, 28 Jun 2002 13:10:40 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from stijn@pcwin002.win.tue.nl) Received: (from stijn@localhost) by pcwin002.win.tue.nl (8.12.4/8.12.4/Submit) id g5SBAeFr065268; Fri, 28 Jun 2002 13:10:40 +0200 (CEST) Date: Fri, 28 Jun 2002 13:10:40 +0200 From: Stijn Hoop To: "M. This laptop doesn't have an infrared-port, but that doesn't really bother me, because my cellular phone, Motorola v66, doesn't have one either. But the laptop doesn't have a serial link, too. So, how can I connect my cellular phone to the laptop, to get online, when I'm mobile. Is it possible to use an USB-wire to cennect the cellular phone to the laptop? Would FreeBSD recognize the cellular phone? And could I use it as a modem to dial out?? Thank you very much, /mh --=20 Martin Hasenbein -- mh@bsd.net -- http://bsd.net UNIX, a way of life. The basics: Laptop is a Thinkpad T21 running 4.6-Stable as of 6/19 (roughly). First, why is it that no matter what configuration setting I use in pccard.conf, the device inserted (both an orinoco wifi card and this winmodem) insists on taking over IRQ 11. The irq line in the pccard.conf file lists IRQ 3 5 9 10, for instance. 11 is not present, yet it is acquired. I tried using pccardd manualling with the -i, and -I flags, still it grabbed 11. Second, how exactly are pccards detected? In other words, should the modem be showing up in a scan using pciconf -lv? I can provide the output, but the card does not show. However, when the modem is inserted, pccardd recognizes, and starts the initialization that I configured in pccard.conf. Last, how does ltmdm determine the type of modem loaded? Under windows, the modem is recognized as a winmodem and running happily using the 8.22 version of the driver from agere, prior to today it was running 5.87, I believe. I think the first two issues may be holding up the modem from working and being recognized. Is there any sort of information I can provde? The dumpcis of the card? pciconf output? Note, that the only entry shown with dmeg is what is reported by pccardd and is: wder# pccard: card inserted, slot 0 Jun 26 00:59:09 chowder pccardd[54]: Card "LT WIN MODEM"("PC card") [] [] has fu nction ID 2 sio5 at port 0x2f8-0x2ff irq 11 flags 0x40000 slot 0 on pccard0 sio5: type 16450 sio5: unable to activate interrupt in fast mode - using normal mode Thoughts, comments? Have you tried giving your kernel these boot arguments: cyril@wizard:~$ cat /boot/loader.conf # -- sysinstall generated deltas -- # userconfig_script_load="YES" hw.pcic.intr_path=1 hw.pcic.irq=0 I had a similar problem as yours, preventing me from doing a web install (had to do a floppy based install...) until I learnt that one can give these arguments at boot time as well.
