It has a Maestro3 sound device, and plays mp3's rather well with mpg123. The problem arises when I try to play a DVD with ogle (xine core dumps if I enable sound). The error meassge is: Jan 20 14:47:23 laptop /kernel: pcm0: play interrupt timeout, channel dead Which could resemble the kern/29709 PR - since some programs work (in my case, mpg123) and some don't. I'm running 4.5-RC (cvsupped yesterday) and with a 'device pcm' in the kernel, and all SCSI items pulled out (except scbus since it would be nice to have USB support for external storage). cat /dev/sndstat gives: FreeBSD Audio Driver (newpcm) Jan 18 2002 23:03:37 Installed devices: pcm0: at io 0xd800, 0xdc80 irq 11 (1p/2r/0v \ channels duplex) 'dmesg | grep pcm0' is almost the same: pcm0: port 0xdc80-0xdcbf,0xd800-0xd8ff irq 11 \ at device 31.5 on pci0 Can anybody help me? Is that something to worry about? I guess you're running cdda2wav as a normal user? If you ran as root it would be able to set realtime scheduling for the process; that should only make any difference if your machine is very slow, or heavily loaded. Here's what I get when I ru cdda2wav with the options from grip: (520) tuatara:~ $ cdda2wav -D /dev/cdrom -x -H -t 1 -O wav test.wav cdrom device (/dev/cdrom) is not of type generic SCSI. Comparing my output with yours, it looks as though your drive is having some trouble with the table of contents on your disc -- the times and sector offsets it's thrown up are clearly very, very wrong :-( What does 'cdcontrol -f /dev/acd0c info' give you? This 'samplefile size will be 44 bytes' business looks bad, too. I guess you could try adding '-S 1' to the cdda2wav options, which might force the drive to run at single speed... no guarantee that will make any difference though. Otherwise, it might just be that your drive and cdda2wav (or the acd driver) don't get along when it comes to audio extraction. Can you borrow another drive to try in its place? Sorry I'm not being more help -- this is one of those 'it works for me' things, unfortunately :-( Scott > bash-2.05$ cdda2wav -I cooked_ioctl -D /dev/acd0c -x -H -t 1 here.wav > 266240 bytes buffer memory requested, 4 buffers, 27 sectors > #Cdda2wav version 1.10_freebsd_4.4-release_i386_i386 real time sched. > soundcard support > AUDIOtrack pre-emphasis copy-permitted tracktype channels > 1- 8 no no audio 2 > Table of Contents: total tracks:8, (total time 816112:40.30) > 1.(128232:06.30), 2.(944563:05.13), 3.(822214:42.58), 4.(500811:32.68), > 5.(411464:08.08) > 6.(306737:39.63), 7.(947883:34.46), 8.(571954:31.03), > > Table of Contents: starting sectors > 1.( 0), 2.(577044480), 3.(532611072), 4.(4232577280), > 5.(2191261952) > 6.(4042850560), 7.(1128202752), 8.(1098711552), lead-out(3672506880) > CDINDEX discid: igoTgjK1Y5eNLegLds4a7yk7MOc- > CDDB discid: 0xff2c6608 > CD-Text: not detected > CD-Extra: not detected > samplefile size will be 44 bytes. > recording 7693926.-3648 seconds stereo with 16 bits @ 44100.0 Hz ->'here'... > cdda2wav: Operation not permitted. cannot set posix realtime scheduling > policy > overlap:min/max/cur, jitter, percent_done: > 27/ 0/ 1/ -2352 0%internal error: negative left_in_track:-262144 > 1/ 1/ 1/ 0 0%internal error: negative left_in_track:-278020 > 1/ 1/ 1/ 0 0%internal error: negative left_in_track:-293308 > 1/ 1/ 1/ 0 0%internal error: negative left_in_track:-308596 > 1/ 1/ 1/ 0 0%internal error: negative left_in_track:-323884 > 1/ 1/ 1/ 0 0%internal error: negative left_in_track:-339172 > 1/ 1/ 1/ 0 0%internal error: negative left_in_track:-354460 > 1/ 1/ 1/ 0 0%internal error: negative left_in_track:-369748 > 1/ 1/ 1/ 0 0%internal error: negative left_in_track:-385036 > 1/ 1/ 1/ 0 0%internal error: negative left_in_track:-400324 > 1/ 1/ 1/ 0 0%internal error: negative left_in_track:-415612 > 1/ 1/ 1/ 0 0%internal error: negative left_in_track:-430900 > 1/ 1/ 1/ 0 0%internal error: negative left_in_track:-446188 > 1/ 1/ 1/ 0 0%internal error: negative left_in_track:-461476 > 1/ 1/ 1/ 0 0%internal error: negative left_in_track:-476764 > 1/ 1/ 1/ 0 0%internal error: negative left_in_track:-492052 > 1/ 1/ 1/ 0 0%internal error: negative left_in_track:-507340 > 1/ 1/ 1/ 0 0%internal error: negative left_in_track:-522628 > 1/ 1/ 1/ 0 0%internal error: negative left_in_track:-537916 > 1/ 1/ 1/ 0 0%internal error: negative left_in_track:-553204 > > The above was a Chemlab CD. To make "hinted" mpeg4 for the Darwin Streaming Server. Well, if there were a server that doesnt need that. And the QT client doesnt yet support those video/vnd.mpegurl "mpeg video fast start movies". It is still very proprietary, you must buy QT pro to make one of those overpowered Apple "fast start movies" (tm?)...which I will never do. Anyway, Darwin SS is better than nothing. The mp4creator is linux and doesnt compile here. Has anybody this probably very small tool on his harddrive ? Please ;-) Best, H. First is the emu10k1 driver. I'm not sure whether this needs to be fixed in pci/emu10k1.c, pcm/ac97.c, or maybe pcm/mixer.c, but using spdif out, there are no volume controls. Also, line in and mic are not routed to the digital out, and Im not sure whether the internal inputs are routed at all. Another one is the brooktree driver. When the window goes full screen or above a certain resolution, the right side cuts out. It would be a lot of work, but would it make sense to make a video4bsd api? This way it would also be easier to write new tv card drivers. The tuners can be split out as with sound chips, so it's just new video chips that would have to be built. Finally, which isnt a hardware problem, but does anybody know how to help xine have a smoother framerate? It seems to level out after the intro of most movies. There's even been a port added recently to install some (one had to manually install them before). However, I rarely use the GUI with mplayer anyway, because I get by far the best playback results with the DGA output device (and thus set 'mplayer' setuid), but GtK gets all fussy about setuid applications. How do they >sound? Do they even work at all? Any problems with 44.1kHz (given that >both of them run at 48kHz internally, as far as I know)? Does recording >work? I thought I should update you all on my progress. I corresponded with a few people as a result of this thread. One responded with "The Fortissimo II works with 4.4, but I haven't tried recording". Another said "I have a Santa Cruz. It's been excellent. Haven't tried recording yet." So, that's part one: They both work (and maybe even record too). Someone suggested http://www.pcavtech.com/soundcards/compare/index.htm as a source of useful data. Indeed it is. Another countered with "FreeBSD does not support a lot of features of these cards" so I would be wasting money, and "Most cheap cards are very good these days. My particular favorites are the ALS4000 and CS4281." This is mostly true. But I'm not happy with the hiss level on my current ALS4000. Cheap seems to mean you can be lucky, or not, with the "same" cards. My final correspondent suggested the "Hoontech DSP24 Value. Supposedly the Envy24 driver at http://www.opensound.com works for it under FreeBSD." This looks quite appealing: 24bit 96kHz stereo playback and record through RCA connectors, a 10 channel 36 bit hardware mixer, and coaxial and optical digital in/out on an optional bracket. No silly 3D modes. Straightforward and practical. And cheap too (compared to similar cards). http://www.alsa-project.org (the Linux sound driver project) supports the DSP24, and the chip manufacturer supplies the data sheet for free. Could be a winner, with a bit of work. Could also be sort of insurance against a likely near future when direct CD ripping becomes impossible, and you have to rip via your sound card's audio input. Well, it could happen! And do you want to run your CD collection through the dodgy input circuits of your cheap sound card when encoding? >And does anybody know where I can buy a Santa Cruz in Australia? As far as I can tell, nobody sells this card here. >PS I heard a rumour that the VideoLogic SonicFury is the Santa Cruz >board in a different box. Does anyone know if this is true? Apparently this is true. (My guess is it will turn out to be ever-so-subtly different, and ruin my day :-) But I can't find a vendor for this one either. And the punch line? What will I buy? Probably the Hoontech DSP24 (just because I can), and also the Fortissimo II (to actually use right now). I'm not convinced that any of the cheap cards will be turn out to sound any good, and I'm willing to waste the fancy 3D aspects to get the sound I want. Plus the DSP24 looks like a practical and useful tool. Well, OK, I want to fiddle with it! That's enough reason, isnt it? Stephen. Mario, No problem here. ogle -u cli works great and ogle alone is the same as ogle -u gui. I am currently running it as root just to be sure. Ogle is great the only problem is with the gui. I'm runing kde2 up to date with ports. Could that be part of the problem? I hadn't thought of that. None of this really works for me. :-) I find the DSP24V much more appealing. All the connectors are straight on the card or the expansion bracket. I don't have to install a rack or one of those big external breakout boxes. I'll be getting one the first chance I can, especially with Katsurajima Naoto having a nearly finished FreeBSD driver. See: http://www.katsurajima.seya.yokohama.jp/envy24 Stephen. PS: I found a vendor of the VideoLogic SonicFury (rebadged Santa Cruz) in Australia. At over twice the price of the Fortissimo II, it won't be finding a home in my PC, even though it is a little bit nicer. Another PS: Should I be worried if I don't know what "balanced inputs and outputs" are? I do not know when the hardware checksum feature was added to FreeBSD but that may have been FreeBSD 4.2 also. The patch was not picked up in FreeBSD 4.5 (at least it is not in RC1). To look for this bug, perform a tcpdump of the tunnel's contents and you will see UDP checksum errors. Odd. cdcontrol -f /dev/acd0c appears to work, but no sound comes when I play. I can get info on the CD, and it is giving correct info. I do have another drive I can dig up, but I think it's crappier than the one currently in my machine. Any other ideas? I have no idea why my sound is mute on the CD, but other sound sources *do* work (XMMS w/ mp3 files, RealPlayer). -- Sean LeBlanc:seanleblanc@attbi.com Yahoo:seanleblancathome ICQ:138565743 MSN:seanleblancathome AIM:sleblancathome Act as if what you do makes a difference. I have found that I am no longer able to read digital audio from my old CDROM or new DVD. Unfortunately the last time I tested this, and found it to work, was with my old cdrom, old mainboard and FreeBSD 3.2. I've seen this reported on the mailing lists by two others: David Rufino and Mark Hannon I also have a VIA motherboard with VIA 82C686 controller. It seems that this problem is not related to configuration or the applications that are being used, but hardware/drivers. Errors I'm seeing are: acd0: READ_CD - ABORTED COMMAND asc=4e ascq=00 error=04 acd0: READ_CD - ILLEGAL REQUEST asc=21 ascq=00 error=04 If anyone knows what is wrong or how this problem can be fixed could they please let me know.
