I had a problem upgrading KDE3 after a fresh FreeBSD 4.5 installation. During the FreeDSB installation, I have choosen to install X-Windows and KDE as well. Immediately afterwards I tried to upgrade to KDE3 using the ports which failed. After contacting David Syphers I guessed, that the missing XFree entry in /var/db/pgk was the reason. So I installed XFree 3 again (which created the required entry) and afterwards the KDE upgrade succeeded. As suggested by David I report this to you. If possible, the installation of components by sysinstall should keep track of the installed components in /var/db/pgk to keep the database consistent! Unlike older versions of FreeBSD, sysinstall in FreeBSD 4.6 will install XFree86 as a set of several normal binary package (thus making the proper additions to /var/db/pkg). Package dependencies will be fulfilled as with any other package installation, and you can run the usual pkg_version/ pkg_info/portupgrade programs on it or its components. In other words, it should just Do The Right Thing (TM) in this regard. (FYI, 4.6-RELEASE will also use XFree86 4.2.0 by default, instead of 3.3.6.) Bruce. XFree86 reads files in several locations. There's no reason sysinstall couldn't put the ones it makes in /etc/X11. XFree86 will still find them and use the right config. I'm not sure what you're asking me to change in the XFree86-4 plists. If you mean adding /etc/X11 to it, that's out of the question. That breaks hier(7) and is not necessary, since one could always put configs there or /usr/X11R6/lib/X11 or wherever they feel like putting them. I don't think packages are supposed to delete their config files if removed. This is yet another step on the way to FreeBSD 4.6-RELEASE; we will be putting the finishing touches on this release over the next few days. Please note that 4.6 is only considered to be released when the RE team makes an announcement to that effect. In particular, the appearance of new CVS tags or new release documentation does not signify that the release has "happened". Only an announcement from the RE team does. For committers, please also remember that the RELENG_4 and RELENG_4_6 branches are in code-freeze, and any commits to these branches require RE approval. We will be releasing the code-freeze for RELENG_4 shortly after the release; at the same time, RELENG_4_6 will become the "4.6 security branch". Bruce.
