I looked on ftp.freebsd.org and it looks like both versions are there but the cdrom only contains 7.1_1. It would seem like we would want the linux_base-7.1_1 installed regardless of installation media. As a side note, I was able to cajole sysinstall to do an ftp install using PPPoE. The approach is to choose the post-install configuration and configure the ethernet device first, then the ppp device and bring it up before starting the "standard" install. There are a couple of twists and turns involved so I'll probably put together a little document on how this is done. Perhaps once someone sees that, a better method can be devised. Let's think about that. acroread5 is about twice the size of acroread3 (4MB vs. 9MB)...not sure what our final disk usage will be like. > What is the appropriate time and place to discuss package layouts? > There are a few other things I would like to see on disk1 which are > often found on other disks. Actually, I'm willing to be early on the 4.8 release. Just curious when/where is best to discuss this. The 4.7 schedule says: Package split posted 17 Sep 2002 -- The proposed package split (which packages go on which disc of the 4 CD set) should be posted to qa@FreeBSD.org, ports@FreeBSD.org, and stable@FreeBSD.org. > The problem with window managers is that *everyone* wants to see > their favorite window manager on disc 1. :-) Yes, I understand. My (probably unpopular) opinion would be that getting rid of the kde and gnome stuff would free up lots of room. I don't want to rehash old discussions if this has been beat to death. The "mga_hal" warning has been around for awhile so its not new in 4.7-RC2. I have the same card and get the same warnings. If you really want to experiment, Matrox has some beta drivers available which contain the mga_hal module: http://www.matrox.com/mga/support/drivers/files/lnx_200.cfm I've tried them but they don't seem to make any difference in my use of X other than making the warnings disappear. My use of X is minimal (no games, no fancy graphics stuff, no xdm, etc) so I can't say I really gave it a workout. Perhaps someone on -questions could provide more insight on the value of mga_hal. (See http://www.XFree86.Org/) > Build Operating System: FreeBSD 5.0-CURRENT i386 [ELF] Hmmm...the i386 ports cluster machines *do* run 5-CURRENT kernels (because they need to make packages for both 4-STABLE and 5-CURRENT). But when they're building 4-STABLE packages, they run a 4-STABLE userland. I thought they were tweaked to lie about what OS version they were really running. It looks odd, but I don't *think* it should bother anything. This may be dependent on what mechanism a package uses to figure out the OS version. I checked a package for one of my own ports (net/ pchar) and it thought it had built on 4.7, which is what it should think.
