I guess I better install it first. I'm talking to Ottawa-Carleton Unix User Group (http://www.ocuug.on.ca/) on October 2002. I'm arranging for an Ultra 5 to be available for my use. Anyone already given one of these talks? Basically, I'm going to devote 10 minutes or so to FreeBSD and the Sparc port, then demonstrate the install. -- Dan Langille I'm looking for a computer job: http://www.freebsddiary.org/dan_langille.php To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-sparc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-sparc Wed Sep 18 4:20:12 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-sparc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.FreeBSD.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 85B2E37B401 for ; Wed, 18 Sep 2002 04:20:11 -0700 (PDT) Received: from kathmandu.sun.com (kathmandu.sun.com [192.18.98.36]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 99A2543E75 for ; Wed, 18 Sep 2002 04:20:10 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from michael.schuster@sun.com) Received: from ms-emuc07-01.Germany.Sun.COM ([129.157.128.14]) by kathmandu.sun.com (8.9.3+Sun/8.9.3) with ESMTP id FAA16512; Wed, 18 Sep 2002 05:20:07 -0600 (MDT) Received: from sun.com (hacker [129.157.133.195]) by ms-emuc07-01.Germany.Sun.COM (8.12.2+Sun/8.12.2/ENSMAIL,v2.2) with ESMTP id g8IBK5ES027915; Wed, 18 Sep 2002 13:20:05 +0200 (MEST) Message-ID: <3D886165.8E67A013@sun.com> Date: Wed, 18 Sep 2002 13:20:05 +0200 From: Michael Schuster Reply-To: Michael.Schuster@sun.com Organization: Sun Microsystems X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.78 [en] (X11; U; SunOS 5.9 sun4u) X-Accept-Language: en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-sparc@freebsd.org, john Polstra Subject: Re: Sparc64 instruction set info Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-sparc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org John, (I may be a bit late as I only read -digest) you can download the SparcV9 architecture manual from here: http://www.sparc.org/standards.html what exactly do you mean by "possibly incorrect compiler-generated assembly language code"? Whoops, I answered this in private mail but didn't realize the question was cc-ed to the list. I am trying to port CVSup (and therefore the Modula-3 compiler) to FreeBSD/sparc64. One ports the Modula-3 compiler by cross-compiling a bootstrap compiler on another platform. The bootstrap compiler is dying pretty quickly with a segmentation violation when I run it on the sparc64 machine. It looks like the problem is bad code being generated, though it's awfully hard to debug it without a working gdb. The Modula-3 code generator is a modified version of gcc-2.95.3, and I suspect the sparc64 support wasn't quite ready for prime time yet in that version. John -- John Polstra John D.
