We're mostly going to be showing off various cool GUI apps on one box while an install takes place on another box. Our original pitch to them was for benchmarking and server tasks, but there will be absolutely none of that as it wasn't deemed very television-friendly. So GUI eyecandy it shall be. It's live and if the last show is any indication it's likely to be rather impromptu. See if you can fit ports in anywhere... also see if you can fit in the FS structure. Those are two things that go unnoticed and are two things that Linux has HUGE problems with -- packages suck and there's really no standardized filesystem. Installing and configuring packages is a nightmare. I'd suggest installing something from ports (I dunno, blackbox or xmame or something) and display how orderly it goes :). It can't hurt to show that FBSD Is Consistent. Unfortunately, we're going head to head with a kernel that's being used in a lot of desktop-oriented things. There's no way FBSD will win a desktop battle... especially not when the Linux guys break out VMware 4 -- which is one of a few apps that FBSD can't emulate due to its kernel hooks. All the same, I wish you good luck! And if someone makes an MPEG, let me know where to get it :) Devon Murray Stokely wrote: >Matt Olander and I will do another (hopefully longer) segment on the >"Screen Savers" show against some guys from Linux Journal this >afternoon. We're mostly going to be showing off various cool GUI apps Guys, just make sure the apps you show don't have "Linux" logo somewhere, as some X11 apps come with that cute penguin by default ;) Some ideas for next episodes: I'd suggest the demonstration of Linux emulation - for example, by showing a working Oracle installation or launching some Linux-only games. I'd also suggest talking about Java. I'd also suggest talking about NVidia drivers. I'd also... man, there are so many topics. Hope you can get enough TV time to show all those to the public. That is boring but in the public eye right now. Also the consistency that someone else mentioned. When the admin installs something new, they can pretty well guess where the config file will be. And perhaps do that with a couple other things to show that stuff really goes in the right space. Whether or not there's time to demonstrate it, it must be said. In the mean time, here are some java projects that look neat that I found @ sf: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ctbj3d/ http://sourceforge.net/projects/virtuadesk/ http://aoi.sourceforge.net/ <-- this one looks really cool :) http://javaisdoomed.sourceforge.net/ <-- doom like game in java, uses opengl, looks neat. Doing a search for Java on SF should give much more stuff, these are the things that jumped out at me as being "eye-candy". Another idea would be to pre-make a live cd of FreeBSD, perhaps with picobsd (seems to be the easiest way to me) or something else and pop it in at some point to display that you have the same flexibility as with Linux -- except it's consistent. It'll be great if they do something like this and boot with Knoppix while having Red Hat installed... Then we can really show the configuration differences. I wouldn't mind creating a picobsd image for you guys. If this is a good idea, lemme know what kind of kernel to build and what release, and I'll make it right away :). --Devon twig les wrote: >Please mention patches...and how few the FBSD admin needs to >apply. There is nothing truely fancy about how it looks, but it is pretty nice for math stuff. And there is the game cube, which is sort of a interesint fps. Mplayer could be interesting to show off. Just like the previous two it is multiply platform, but having it says freebsd is just as useful for video as linux is. Then there is avidemux. It is a cool little avieditor. I'm only rarely affected by patches since I turn almost everything off (cough, Sendmail, cough) and our boxes are in a crazy secure physical place so I "get around" to the local sploits. So set it and forget it works well for me. And that was obviously *5 FRIGGIN PATCHES* for my windoze box on Wednesday, I simply didn't wait long enough to post. --- RexFelis wrote: > Er, I am thinking in terms of use as a desktop machine... once > it's set up, you pretty much have nothing left to do with or > to it, in my (humble) experience. > > Shannon > > Michal Pasternak wrote: > RexFelis [Thu, Sep 04, 2003 at 10:32:42PM -0700]: > > FreeBSD: The 'set it and forget it' OS. > > Really? Dear Twig Les, please notice the name of this mailing list. It's freebsd-advocacy@. It's _not_ windows-bashing@ ;) Even if we are pro-BSD, we can't tell false things to people. Saying, that FreeBSD doesn't need patching is not true. It doesn't need updates as often, as Windows or Linux does - but it still needs them, it still has bugs inside, like every software we use everyday. Just like the "set it and forget it" "slogan" RexFelis thought about - it's also not true. If you will setup some box, with some services on it and forget about software updates, you might end up defaced. "BSD: What you'll probably end up on anyway." sounds good - and it is true. No matter if you run Slackware, Debian or Redhat - you will still end up compiling some software packages from sources, just because binaries don't contain the options you need. BSD has ports/pkgsrc. BSD is good as a development platform. My slogan? "BSD: We know, who wrote the code. Linux - until 2.5.x. branch (that's about 25 MB of gzipped sources AFAIR) didn't had _any_ version control system... and that could help them with that SCO case. Pity. ... ;) or "BSD: we don't pollute the internet with the same binary package for 10 different distributions" ;) Regards, -- Michal Pasternak :: http://pasternak.w.lub.pl Noise to meet you. "I don't patch very often. I'm only rarely affected by patches since I turn almost everything off..." Where did I say that FBSD doesn't need patching? And as for being an MS basher, how can one appreciate one operating system unless it is in relationship to another? The point of the initial post is that I am inundated with patches on one OS and the other one needs some attention every few months. That's pretty well on track for advocacy IMO. --- Michal Pasternak wrote: > twig les [Fri, Sep 05, 2003 at 09:20:25AM -0700]: > > And that was obviously *5 FRIGGIN PATCHES* for my windoze > box on > > Wednesday, I simply didn't wait long enough to post. > > Dear Twig Les, > > please notice the name of this mailing list. In my case, I find that a LOT of the work I have to do for my other operating systems just doesn't need to be done for my FreeBSD box - there's a portupgrade here, and a cvsup there. Make a new world once every month or so... but if I were to set my mother up on FreeBSD, I dare say her system would need attention maybe twice a year at best. So my 'set it and forget it' statement arose from my thinking along the lines of how I would use it, and not as a server. Sometimes when I am tired I forget to think beyond my own experiences. :) That, and I am not much of a server admin. twig les wrote: Dear Michal, Please notice the *actual words* I wrote. I used VirtualDub on windows for the first time (glav wouldn't open the avi for some reason) but at least you can see what happened. if somebody would like to give the editing another shot or see the whole show, the entire avi (260mb) is up on our ftp server. anonymous uploads are temporarily turned on just in case anybody gets industrious. I'd be really ecstatic if we got something a bit better up as the press release is seeing alot of hits from Yahoo/Google news. real stream: http://www.offmyserver.com/cgi-bin/store/news/techtv_090303.html original avi: ftp://knight.ixsystems.net/pub/freebsd_vs_linux_shootout-techtv-20030902.avi fyi, this is the free version of Real's Helix streaming server so don't all watch it at once :P -matt -- Matt Olander (408)943-4100 Phone (408)943-4101 Fax www.offmyserver.com -- "Those who don't read have no advantage over those who can't" -Mark Twain
