I'd like to get it to run FreeBSD. It has an NCR 810 SCSI controller, and claims from what I can see that there is a 6 disk RAID-5 and its broke, and 1 JBOD... There are only 4 disks in the case. Trying to figure out how to make it just one big RAID. I tried ARC, and didn't see anything there for it, and tried "run bios" and that does nothing. Anywhere I can find out more or get more direction? Also if there are any specific sites for Alpha/FreeBSD installs please let me know. Thanks! Tuc/TTSG Internet Services, Inc. Just booting is possible, but I won't recomend it, because floppies are way to small. > The SCSI drive in my Alpha is VERY LOUD and other scsi drives i have > tried are loud too. Some SCSI controllers and the onboard IDE controllers are at least bootable - additional ide controllers are not. You should try the onboard controller and if you think it's to slow for your usage then you should use a modern card and hook up a small ide/scsi drive or a compact flash just for booting. -- B.Walter BWCT http://www.bwct.de ticso@bwct.de info@bwct.de From owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Sep 14 11:51:42 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A4D7416A4BF for ; Sun, 14 Sep 2003 11:51:42 -0700 (PDT) Received: from mail.atomfx.com (adsl-gte-la-216-86-209-124.mminternet.com [216.86.209.124]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D629D43F93 for ; Sun, 14 Sep 2003 11:51:41 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from john@atomfx.com) Received: from atomfx.com (asspain.atomfx.com [192.168.0.5]) by mail.atomfx.com (8.12.9/8.12.8) with ESMTP id h8EIiTCg018280 for ; Sun, 14 Sep 2003 11:44:29 -0700 Message-ID: <3F64B70C.9040103@atomfx.com> Date: Sun, 14 Sep 2003 11:44:28 -0700 From: John Wheez User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.4) Gecko/20030624 X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org References: <3F64A18E.8070000@atomfx.com> <20030914193627.145af17f.lehmann@ans-netz.de> In-Reply-To: <20030914193627.145af17f.lehmann@ans-netz.de> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-MailScanner-Information: Please contact the ISP for more information X-atomfx-MailScanner: Found to be clean Subject: Re: Booting Alpha from Floppy?? Yes, i never got the flash utility to work on Alphas. What firmware level is currently on your controller? Is it recognized on a PeeCee? Between 2 people I was able to get the BIOS on the DAC960 up to 2.70, not the 2.73 I had hoped, but every little bit is help. I used the ACRCF utility I was given, and flubbed around for a while until I think I figured out how to get the disks set up. I then Initialized them. When I booted FreeBSD, it saw them as ONLINE!!!!! (But, Raid-7.... Hrm, is that a problem, or just a "feature") I tried to set it up, doing an (A)utomatic on mlxd0... But for some reason it won't newfs properly. Its set as 131,0 ... I tried to do the Fixit, newfs by hand, and it just won't do it. I forget the exact error, it might have been Invalid Arguement. Any hints where to go next? Should I be going BACKWARDS because of something? Thanks, Tuc/TTSG Internet Services, Inc.
