First post to the correct mailing list. That would most likely be: freebsd-questions@freebsd.org Now, clusters are useless for normal users (workstation, server, ...). Anyway it's still fun to try it even if it's not useful :) You can start by reading this http://www.offmyserver.com/cgi-bin/store/news/techtv_090303.html?id=7j3YLnbS Older systems may also be used for clusters though it won't help much to see a difference (as far as older means p90). A cluster is used for intensive computing things such as Graphic rendering. It has the latest/last firmware, V7.2-1 The system has: 1) Qlogic ISP-1020 Scsi controller 2) DEC RRD46 CD rom drive 3) Segate 4GB Barracuda SCSI hard drive 4) Built-in 21143 ethernet 5) S3 Trio64 video card 6) 128MB memory I don't have anything on the built-in CMD-646 IDE controller The system ran VMS for years. I want to end up with a system that runs Netscape, MySQL, Samba. What version should I use? If I install 5.2 (from the ISO images I got on ftp.freebsd.org), it loads OK after having to hand-edit the XF86Config file (I had to put in BusID "PCI:0:12:0"). But then most everything on the screen hangs and requires resetting the machine. The 5.1 install went OK and startx works, bringing up KDE. Again, though, after using it for a few minutes, the screen hangs and system reboots. I noticed it happens just after clicking on something (with the mouse), as opposed to while it is downloading stuff from a webpage. Can I use a 4.8 or 4.9 release? If so, where can I get the disk 1 iso image? I checked several of the ftp sites, and none of them seem to have it. Also, in case anyone cares, starting with the 5.2 disk 1, and my hard drive still formatted for VMS, hangs the partitioning screen. A couple of the options resulted in a 'signal 11' error message followed by a reboot, a couple of the other options said they required me to select a 'slice' or 'partition' at the top of the screen, but there were none to select. I had to run the 4.8 miniinst disk to partition the disk first. It didn't seem to have any problem. (mozilla...) - 5.1 worked for me (gcc 3.2.2) but still i couldn't compile gnupg, mozilla and gnome2 (some apps for gnome2 segfaulted). - When 5.2RC was out I upgraded immediatly and now the system compiles/runs mozilla, gnome2 ... I have an Permedia2 8MB SGRAM (64-bit) and freebsd doesn't work properly with that (linux does). When googling I found many people saying that the best cards to use are the Matrox Millenium cards, maybe look for such card. > > The 5.1 install went OK and startx works, bringing up KDE. > Again, though, after using it for a few minutes, the screen > hangs and system reboots. The problem could be your PCI. If the graphics card is 32-bit try to put it in a 32-bit only slot, maybe that resolves the problem. I also had some problems with creating a partition on the disk. Maybe it will work when using the live cd. Download the 2nd iso for the alpha, this one is an live cd and load it when installing. Your problem could be different than mine, as signal 11 errors are 'hardware errors' maybe corrupt RAM's or scsi disk.... I don't remember seeing such signals. I would guess that most older Rage-based ATI chipsets will work just fine as well. I also had a Matrox Millenium [2] card in too earlier that worked OK. You can find some for around $10 on eBay, go for a 4MB or 8MB model. Matrox Mystique might also work but I had flashed mine to a Mac BIOS and hadn't tested in the AS. I am using the original PowerStorm 4D10T (ELSA GLoria) card that shipped with the machine. You may want to give RedHat v7.2 alpha a try if only to see a working (out of the box) X environment. I have been working with the two X systems to figure out why the RedHat X works but the FBSD does not. More experienced eyes on this project than my own would help greatly. Is there anything special i need to do??? I can not get my Promise Ultra TX 2 133 ATA-IDE card to function properly. It always wants to operate in PI0 mode instead of UDMA133. This fixes a number of glaring bugs in RC1, chiefly the problem that many users experienced with panics during install and dynamic library problems in the 'fixit' environment. It also contains a complete set of packages on disc1, including KDE and Gnome desktop environments. I'm hoping for this to be the final RC before the release in the first week of January, so please go out and have fun with it over the holidays. Special thanks to Jeff Roberson, Doug White, John Baldwin, and many others for working hard to fix the bugs in RC1. Perhaps this promise card requires a x86 environment?? nope, the bios is not required for the card to work. > I'd like to hear your experiences and results when you have time.. I could not get umda66 mode to work with the card/alpha. I do have time, and a card available. But not the exact same alpha. However further research of mine has lead to some interesting conclusions :(. I have a regular intel box ( supermicro ) with a promise 100 tx2 card and the latest bios. This promise card shows really strange behavior depending on the disks connected to it. 2 120gb maxtor disks ( old 5400 ), and a 30gb quantum fireball won't work properly on the promise controller, I swapped cables for ages, did rain dances, It just won't work. Whereas an ibm disk works just fine. This is with every os I had available ( windows, linux, bsd ). The alpha uses an promise 133tx2 and a maxtor disk, which leads me to believe that this is no freebsd problem but a hardware issue. I'll powerup the old alphastation 500 which I have laying around, burn 2 fbsd cd's and stuff the promise 100tx2 in it. -- Sten Spans There is a crack in everything that's how the light gets in.
