Urk. It is currently swapping under load from rsyncd's. :-/ It has "only" got 2GB of ram in it. Each one is using 100+MB, compared to around 12MB for a cvsupd. Some of which have been running since friday.. Sounds like that tiered distribution strategy is going to be needed after all. Just out of curiosity, how much memory does an ftpd process take on that box? I'm used to mirror by FTP (I do not like rsync because of several bad experiences), but I'm willing to switch to cvsup if that reduces load on ftp-master. The one thing I added that made a HUGE difference was ram for the hardware raid controller (it had 16MB to start). The filesystem "stuff" (inodes, etc) is all just the default for a partition of that size. It appears to have between 5 and 30 cvsupd's running at any given time (I should probably take 15 minutes and have it keep a record =), and I have never (though I would like to) tested the maximum number of connections it can handle gracefully. I have not noticed or heard any complaints about its performance. It's running only cvsupd (i.e. ftp2 is a different physical box). I'm not sure how well raid-0 will serve you, especially if you're going to do cvs/ftp and www together. ftp2.freebsd.org is the exact same configuration, except with a big raid-5 instead of two raid-1s (it runs stock ftpd and thttpd), traffic graphs are at http://ftp2.freebsd.org/etc/. I'd be interested to hear the configurations used by and experiences of the other mirror operators. Here's how cvsup3 is set up: - Operating system is stored on a Fibre Channel-attached five-disk RAID-5 set. - CVS repository is stored on a four-disk stripe set on the same Fibre Channel RAID controller. - All of the FTP archive, except for FreeBSD, is stored on another partition of the same stripe set. This includes less-popular archives such as CPAN, CTAN, Tcl, Ruby, X, and so forth. - The FreeBSD archive is stored on a two-disk stripe set on a pair of Seagate ST150176LC disks donated by Robert Seastrom, attached to the server's on-board Adaptec AIC7899 host adapter. The striping is accomplished using ccd(4) with an interleave of 2048. The filesystem was initialized with 4097 sectors per ``cylinder'', which results in the metadata being spread evenly over both disks. I have temporarily upgraded this machine with an extra half-gig of memory to provide reasonable service during the peak loads expected for 5.0-RELEASE. -GAWollman To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hubs" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-hubs Fri Jan 17 15:36:44 2003 Delivered-To: freebsd-hubs@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 963D037B401 for ; Fri, 17 Jan 2003 15:36:43 -0800 (PST) Received: from khavrinen.lcs.mit.edu (khavrinen.lcs.mit.edu [18.24.4.193]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D7D5543EB2 for ; Fri, 17 Jan 2003 15:36:42 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from wollman@khavrinen.lcs.mit.edu) Received: from khavrinen.lcs.mit.edu (localhost [IPv6:::1]) by khavrinen.lcs.mit.edu (8.12.6/8.12.6) with ESMTP id h0HNagCJ082192 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=EDH-RSA-DES-CBC3-SHA bits=168 verify=OK); Fri, 17 Jan 2003 18:36:42 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from wollman@khavrinen.lcs.mit.edu) Received: (from wollman@localhost) by khavrinen.lcs.mit.edu (8.12.6/8.12.6/Submit) id h0HNaffS082189; Fri, 17 Jan 2003 18:36:41 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from wollman) Date: Fri, 17 Jan 2003 18:36:41 -0500 (EST) From: Garrett Wollman Message-Id: <200301172336.h0HNaffS082189@khavrinen.lcs.mit.edu> To: Peter Wemm Cc: hubs@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: 5.0-RC3 uploaded for ia64 In-Reply-To: <20030112231942.8C0DC2A89E@canning.wemm.org> References: <20030112231942.8C0DC2A89E@canning.wemm.org> Sender: owner-freebsd-hubs@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org < said: > Urk. Right now it has a load index of 135, has 715 running ftpd processes, and is pushing 140 Mbps. Based on past experience, it maxes out around 200 Mbps with 1600 ftpd processes running, when the load is this high, it's quite unresponsive. Due to my general lack of archive clue, I personally am hesitant to touch this. It sounds reasonable, though. If this is the worst problem we have, I'd be pretty happy. :-) > there is no "disc1" for pc98 or for ia64 I've copied the ia64 platform builder to double check on that. In the case of pc98, there's no problem because that's all I was given. Users will download the miniinst.iso image, instead of disc1. (As you probably know, disc1 = miniinst + packages.) Cheers, Bruce. PS. I just created a link for /pub/FreeBSD/ISO-IMAGES-pc98 ... can I get a point for that? :-) --==_Exmh_-1798155380P Content-Type: application/pgp-signature -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.0 (FreeBSD) Comment: Exmh version 2.5+ 20020506 iD8DBQE+Khoq2MoxcVugUsMRAng9AJ9sIrlmPNqcyIBMNgRnMZcrMP8FyQCgoqol awsHtN+3VyuaYfH5+0krghA= =H23f -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --==_Exmh_-1798155380P-- To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hubs" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-hubs Sat Jan 18 19:35:41 2003 Delivered-To: freebsd-hubs@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 66A9737B401; Sat, 18 Jan 2003 19:35:40 -0800 (PST) Received: from ns1.xcllnt.net (209-128-86-226.BAYAREA.NET [209.128.86.226]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5732743E4A; Sat, 18 Jan 2003 19:35:39 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from marcel@xcllnt.net) Received: from athlon.pn.xcllnt.net (athlon.pn.xcllnt.net [192.168.4.3]) by ns1.xcllnt.net (8.12.6/8.12.6) with ESMTP id h0J3ZaMW008746; Sat, 18 Jan 2003 19:35:36 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from marcel@piii.pn.xcllnt.net) Received: from athlon.pn.xcllnt.net (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by athlon.pn.xcllnt.net (8.12.6/8.12.6) with ESMTP id h0J3Za7b001225; Sat, 18 Jan 2003 19:35:36 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from marcel@athlon.pn.xcllnt.net) Received: (from marcel@localhost) by athlon.pn.xcllnt.net (8.12.6/8.12.6/Submit) id h0J3Zasj001224; Sat, 18 Jan 2003 19:35:36 -0800 (PST) Date: Sat, 18 Jan 2003 19:35:36 -0800 From: Marcel Moolenaar To: "Bruce A.
