During this time, I always had to apply some patches from Traverse Technologies which essentially used a 'v' character in the dial-out number to request that the call be marked as voice instead of data. I have kept these patches in a set of notes at http://mirriwinni.cs.jcu.edu.au/~phillip/Homepage/DoV/ Now, with FreeBSD-5.1, this capability is obtained by selecting b1protocol as hdlc and then setting the optional parameter bcap to dov. I have had no success in using user-ppp and this feature. HAS ANYONE HAD SUCCESS USING DOV ON RECENT i4b? If so, could they please email me sample isdnd.rc and ppp.conf files. I have written a small patch to one source file so that the -P option to isdnd can confirm that I have asked for DoV (it is trivial and I'll post it shortly). I have also 'hardwired' the code to always request a DoV call but with no success as my ISP disconnects my call (my ISP will disconnect any call to their DoV line if the call is not marked DoV to prevent the caller from being hit by exorbitant per-byte Australian charges, although I have not tried to get my ISP to verify precisely why my calls disconnect yet). If no one can report success, then maybe the problem is not me but something in the latest version of the code (in which case I'll organise some logs etc.). I've been using SuSE Linux for about 30 months now, but I never learnt to set up an ISDN card manually. I tried to do so under Debian GNU/Linux 3.0 (Woody), but failed. I was *this* short of succeding when I managed to blow up my system and had to reinstall... So setting up ISDN manually scares me a bit. But I kinda like FreeBSD - first impressions and all - and am going to get ISDN running, no matter the cost. =) BTW, I'm using FreeBSD 5.0-RELEASE After some initial trouble I managed to recompile the kernel with ISDN-Support, according to the documentation included in /usr/share/examples/isdn/contrib. Then I put the corresponding entry to /boot/device.hints. After I figured out the correct values for my A1 (irq=3 io=0x340), FreeBSD seemed to recognize the card correctly: isic0 at port 0xb40-0xb5f,0x340-0x35f,0x1340-0x135f,0xf20-0xf3f,0x720-0x73f,0x1720-0x173f,0x1b40-0x1b5f iomem 0xd0000 irq 11 flags 0x4 on isa0 isic0: passive stack unit 0 isic0: AVM A1 or Fritz!Card Classic i4bisppp: 4 ISDN SyncPPP device(s) attached i4b: ISDN call control device attached i4btel: 2 ISDN telephony interface device(s) attached i4brbch: 4 raw B channel access device(s) attached i4bctl: ISDN system control port attached i4btrc: 4 ISDN trace device(s) attached I tried to set up kernel ppp as described, but it didn't work apparently. After setting up ppp/sppp, I get an error message like this: i4b-L1 timer3_expired: state = F4 Awaiting Signal i4b-L1 isic_recover: HSCX B: ISTA = 0x0 i4b-L1 isic_recover: ISAC: ISTA = 0x14 i4b-L1 isic_recover: ISAC: CISQ = 0x1e i4b-L1 isic_recover: HSCX B: IMASK = 0xff i4b-L1 isic_recover: HSCX A: IMASK = 0xf8 i4b-L1 isic_recover: ISAC: IMASK = 0x2a i4b-L2 i4b_T202_timeout: unit 0, N202 = 3 i4b-L1 isic_ph_data_req: still in state F3! i4b-L3 T303_timeout: SETUP not answered, cr = 24 i4b-L3 next_l3state: FSM illegal state, state = ST_OW - Out Wait EST, event = EV_T303EXP - T303 timeout! i4b-L1 timer3_expired: state = F4 Awaiting Signal i4b-L1 isic_recover: HSCX B: ISTA = 0x0 i4b-L1 isic_recover: ISAC: ISTA = 0x4 i4b-L1 isic_recover: ISAC: CISQ = 0x32 i4b-L1 isic_recover: HSCX B: IMASK = 0xff i4b-L1 isic_recover: HSCX A: IMASK = 0xf8 i4b-L1 isic_recover: ISAC: IMASK = 0x2a I am not entirely certain, what the system is trying to tell me, nor how to correct the problem. I do remember however having a similar problem with Debian. If I understand everything correctly, it had to do with the timing: When the ISDN-adapter dials up to my ISP, the connection is established. Then a certain time passes, before both sides start exchanging information (such as username/password). If my box waits too long before sending such information, the other side closes the connection. Under Debian, I had to set this value from three to one second. I guess, it's something like this with FreeBSD as well, but I did not find a clue on how to do this with FreeBSD. I read "The Care And Feeding of ISDN4BSD", but it did not help me any further than it already had, or I missed something crucial. The man-pages and the handbook didn't turn out to be any help with this, either. So what am I doing wrong? And, more importantly, how can I get ISDN to run correctly? ISDN is at the moment the main reason I am not switching to FreeBSD as my new primary OS. Another datapoint. Did you find any solution? I browsed this mailinglist's archives at freebsd.org, but I didn't find any hints on how to solve my problem. ;-/ Now the problem is getting more complicated, even: I was wrong about the irq, Linux assigns irq 3 to the A1, FreeBSD only recognizes it, when /boot/device.hints says hint.isic.0.irq="11" When I try to make FreeBSD assign irq 3 to the A1, I get an error message. I also tried deactivating my serial ports (sio1 uses irq 3), but then - I don't understand, why - Linux didn't recognize the A1 any more. =) But with irq 11 assigned to the A1, FreeBSD still gives me error message I got before. ;-/ I suspect the problem to have to do with something called "lcp-restart" in my SuSE Config-file for synchronous ppp. Here is the corresponding section of /etc/ppp/options.ippp0 (ippp is Linux' couterpart to FreeBSD's sppp / isp): :: # if you have problems with handshaking (no response for first :: # lcp-package) try to decrease the retry-cycle. Default is 3 sec, :: # try for example 2 sec: :: # lcp-restart 2 :: # sometimes you need this: :: noccp I remember that setting lcp-restart to the default value of 3 seconds did *not* work, and I had to set it to 1 secons unter Debian. Is there some option to set this under FreeBSD? Or isn't that my problem's cause? Thanks in advance, Kind regards, Benjamin - -- "Der Hoffnung beraubt sein, heißt noch nicht - verzweifeln." Looking at the card in front of me I see it has jumpers on it: IRQ 2-3-4-5-6-7 IO 200-240-300-340 I would try 5 as IRQ. Look for IO conflicts with other cards. Then again, I suspect the problem lies elsewhere. Hope Gary can supply a patch. I believe to recall that 5.0-R had problems with the kernel timer routines and this got fixed in a later 5.1-current. So you have two options: Either go back to 4.8-STABLE or stumble ahead and go for 5.1-RELEASE.
