If the FreeBSD mailing list is mirrored on the web the e-mail addresses need to be salted so that bots can not recognize them as addresses. Also, spammers never send the e-mail with a real e-mail address in the from line either. Most of the time, most to all of the headers are forged. So the name and e-mail address that it was sent from probably aren't the same as what the spammer would be subscribed to the FreeBSD list with if he actually was subscribed to it anyway. My only effective way of blocking spam is to use unique e-mail addresses like you were doing with the freebsd@ one and then blocking those unique ones once they start getting spam. One way is to suck in the email addresses of ALL users on a system running majordomo if the hole hasn't been pathched. > Also, spammers never send the e-mail with a real e-mail address in the > from line either. Which is why you watch the SMTP server IPS [ since most names are forged ] > My only effective way of blocking spam is to use unique e-mail > addresses like you were doing with the freebsd@ one and then > blocking those unique ones once they start getting spam. Use a decent spam filter. I have been using the same email address since 1996 and don't have the problems that many people attribute not changing your email address regularly. I don't change my real name or phone number, so why should I change my email address if I have it under control. You are also told not to post to NG's with a real name. I've been posting since 1985 - but in those days it was a .uucp name. I do mung the reply to but not severely. > Once an address starts getting > nailed it's on spam databases everywhere and so it's done for. Common names are real spam attractants. Avoid names like Bill, Bob, Joe, etc. I remember seeing lists when people were tyring to relay that started with all common names starting with "a" at the major public sites [yahoo, aol, etc], then the next batch would be 'b' names. That will help too. For linuxthreads, yes. Linux threads implements threads as pseudo processes using rfork(). The 70MB memory usage is probably shared between all the "processes". Unfortunately, top doesn't do a job of showing how much of processes memory is shared with another process. Almost all forked processes share some memory space of the parent, whether rfork() or regular fork(). > TIA, > > -- > Troy Settle > Pulaski Networks > http://www.psknet.com > 540.994.4254 ~ 866.477.5638 > Pulaski Chamber 2002 Small Business Of The Year Tom From owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jun 17 01:28:25 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C947E37B401 for ; Tue, 17 Jun 2003 01:28:25 -0700 (PDT) Received: from relay.kiev.sovam.com (relay.kiev.sovam.com [212.109.32.5]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B8E8243F3F for ; Tue, 17 Jun 2003 01:28:24 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from dimitry@al.org.ua) Received: from [212.109.32.116] (helo=svitonline.com) by relay.kiev.sovam.com with esmtp (Exim 3.36 #5) id 19SBpG-0000sv-00 for freebsd-isp@freebsd.org; Tue, 17 Jun 2003 11:28:22 +0300 From: Dmitry Alyabyev To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Date: Tue, 17 Jun 2003 11:30:44 +0300 User-Agent: KMail/1.5.2 References: <3EEB1F64.3000706@nlink.com.br> <20030614154521.5fdc98ce.sheepkiller@cultdeadsheep.org> In-Reply-To: <20030614154521.5fdc98ce.sheepkiller@cultdeadsheep.org> X-NCC-RegID: ua.svitonline MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline Message-Id: <200306171130.44392.dimitry@al.org.ua> Subject: Re: Limit for smtp connection X-BeenThere: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list Reply-To: dimitry@al.org.ua List-Id: Internet Services Providers List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 17 Jun 2003 08:28:26 -0000 On Saturday 14 June 2003 16:45, Clement Laforet wrote: > On Sat, 14 Jun 2003 10:13:08 -0300 > > Paulo Fragoso wrote: > > Hi, > > Hi Paulo, > > > We have found some SMTP server on the internet which accept no more than > > 5 simultaneusly connection from our SMTP server. To create the gre tunnels you will need to have: pseudo-device gre in your kernel along with: options IPFIREWALL options IPFIREWALL_FORWARD assuming that your proxy server is 192.168.1.37 and the routers interface is 192.168.1.34 I setup the following entries in rc.local. The main thing that caused me problems was that some GRE packets come from a loopback interface and some come from the LAN interface facing the proxy server. This is why I had to create two GRE tunnels and two ipfw rules. Assume the loopback is 10.11.44.254 You can either run tcpdump to find out what GRE traffic is being sent to your proxy or alternatively you could find it being used by sh ip wccp Global WCCP information: Router information: Router Identifier: 10.11.44.254 Protocol Version: 1.0 ifconfig gre0 create ifconfig gre0 192.168.1.37 10.20.30.40 netmask 255.255.255.255 link1 tunnel 192.168.1.37 10.11.44.254 up ifconfig gre1 create ifconfig gre1 192.168.1.37 10.20.30.41 netmask 255.255.255.255 link1 tunnel 192.168.1.37 192.168.1.34 up the 10.20.30.40 & 10.20.30.41 addresses are dummies to avoid problems with GRE endpoints being on the same network. Since the GRE traffic is just one way from the router to the proxy it doesn't matter what address you put in there. Lastly I setup the following IP firewall rules (I have configured squid as per the FAQ Ch 17? and have squid listening on port 80) allow ip from 192.168.1.37 to any fwd 127.0.0.1 tcp from any to any 80 in recv gre0 fwd 127.0.0.1 tcp from any to any 80 in recv gre1 allow ip from any to any Hope that helps, feel free to contact me if you need more help. I've never installed/configured hardware like this. Basically i= t is=20 2 servers connected to a exteral raid device with scsi cables. These serv= ers=20 can access the device at the same time. Which makes it nice for redundenc= y=20 and load balancing. We are going to use it as a big NFS mailstore which other mail servers wi= ll=20 access to deliver mail (smtp/pop3, etc.). The mailservers will all be running FreeBSD (postfix, amavisd-new,=20 courier-imap/pop3, sqwebmail, freevrrpd, etc. etc). *feerr!* I will put these servers behind a FreeBSD firewall using ipnat for round-= robin=20 load balancing. So it should eventually be a nice big redundent, load balanced mailserver= =20 behind a firewall and everybox will be running FreeBSD. My question is with regards to the servers I want to use as the NFS=20 mailstore(2x HP Netserver (LH 3r) connected to a Netserver Rackstorage 12= ).=20 Can I run FreeBSD on it too ? I guess the answer is yes? but Is FreeBSD t= he=20 best option for this type of hardware and will it be difficult to configu= re.=20 Or is Linux a better alternative ? I honestly have no idea what the best=20 option is and don't want to reliase a month or two later when everything = is=20 live that I made a mistake and shouldve done something else or installed=20 something else. tx e. But when a new client needed to move his sizeable web site to one of the servers I mainain - he gave me access to his account - on a Verio machine - and I rynced cross country. I did this for him as he tried to tar up his old site and his space restriction was such that it was going to take him hours to do it in pieces, transmit and rebuild. rsync did the job in about 1/10th the time with only about 5% of the effort. > > -----Original Message----- > > From: owner-freebsd-isp@freebsd.org > > [mailto:owner-freebsd-isp@freebsd.org]On Behalf Of Alexey G > > Misurenko > > Sent: Friday, June 20, 2003 10:29 AM > > To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org > > Subject: Re: What would be the best way to copy lots of > > files from one > > server to another. > > > > > > On Fri, 20 Jun 2003 14:21:01 +0200 > > Etienne Ledoux wrote: > > > > > Greetings, > > > > > > I need to copy lots of directories/files from one server > > to another. The OS you choose shouldn't be a problem, but you're going to need to look carefully into your filesystem choices, as you'll need a specialized filesystem that supports multiple simultaneous access. The standard linux and BSD filesystems don't work with multiple accessors. Take a look at GFS and other clustering file systems. On the other hand, if you only plan on having one of the systems running at any one time, and the other one is just a hot-spare, then it doesn't matter. -- Ted Cabeen http://www.pobox.com/~secabeen ted@impulse.net Check Website or Keyserver for PGP/GPG Key BA0349D2 secabeen@pobox.com "I have taken all knowledge to be my province." -F. That way you can do an initial copy while the server is still running and then do a quick re-sync during the switchover. Otherwise you'll have significant downtime while the copy goes through. 45GB is a lot of data. -- Ted Cabeen http://www.pobox.com/~secabeen ted@impulse.net Check Website or Keyserver for PGP/GPG Key BA0349D2 secabeen@pobox.com "I have taken all knowledge to be my province." -F. I love rsync and use it for lots of things. A one time move of 45 GB is not something I would use rsync for. Rsync is good for just what is says it's for: keeping thing in sync. Rsync will build metadata information about the ENTIRE data set before moving a single bit. This is very costly, making rsync's utility plummet as the data set size increases. You'll find it preferrable to write a script to traverse and descend directories, spawning numerous rsync processes for smaller sized directories. Of course, considering that it's a one-time move, I would advise physically moving the drive, to remove any sort of network involvement. I've been in your position before, and I can promise you that even using NFS and spawning multiple moves (mv /var/mail/a* /mnt &; mv /var/mail/b* /mnt &; etc.) will quickly outpace rsync. The number of concurrent processes involved in the move can really only be determined by watching the aggregate traffic to your server. You'll see it level off at a certain point (for me it was X=7), after which additional processes don't yield any more optimization. Plus, depending on your CPU, you might want to avoid using ssh encryption too. Usually if it is a LAN to LAN copy, cpdup over NFS will be WAY faster than rsync, and use little memory. I've used cpdup for moving mail to a new server. I synced before the cutover, shutdown the mail server, synced one more, and then brought up the mail server on the system. Very tidy. Tom
