I absolutely couldn't get my mouse to work right with X. I tried most of the relevant options and the best that happened is that I had control only to the left and down. Once the mouse hit the lower left corner it was all over. I changed the protocol to auto and now everything is happy. Thanks, it was good of you to take the time to share what you found, because the archives are a valuable and much used resource. It's nice to see such a considerate person joining our community. I'm reposting this to freebsd-questions, which is the archive that people rely on for all support questions. We don't distinguish between newbies and old timers when offering support. Everyone deserves the best we can give, and that's in freebsd-questions. Also the developers watch freebsd-questions to see if new users are having trouble installing new versions. You might not have realised that people are not supposed to ask questions, nor answer them, on freebsd-newbies. If someone does that by mistake, you can be sure they don't know much about FreeBSD or its community and you wouldn't want their advice. So there is no point ever searching the -newbies archives for help. Just use freebsd-questions for any help, asking or offering or searching. You don't have to join the list first. If you read the mailing list charters on the web site, you'll see what the difference is. When you join a mailing list, you get sent your own copy of its list charter. If you have trouble working out how to use the mailing lists effectively, _that_ is something you are very welcome to ask about in freebsd-newbies. Thanks again for your helpful approach, and I'm glad to see you got everything sorted out in the end. If you need any more help please write again to freebsd-questions, or if you just want to chat I'll see you over at freebsd-newbies. -- Regards, -*Sue*- From owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Oct 5 15:19:45 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5E73616A4B3 for ; Sun, 5 Oct 2003 15:19:45 -0700 (PDT) Received: from mta02-svc.ntlworld.com (mta02-svc.ntlworld.com [62.253.162.42]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 67CDC43FBD for ; Sun, 5 Oct 2003 15:19:44 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from andywhite@ntlworld.ie) Received: from deskgx ([81.98.90.226]) by mta02-svc.ntlworld.com (InterMail vM.4.01.03.37 201-229-121-137-20020806) with ESMTP id <20031005221943.EHEJ16630.mta02-svc.ntlworld.com@deskgx> for ; Sun, 5 Oct 2003 23:19:43 +0100 From: "Andrew White" To: Date: Sun, 5 Oct 2003 23:19:42 +0100 Message-ID: <000001c38b8e$c63b5560$0201a8c0@deskgx> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 (Normal) X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook, Build 10.0.2627 In-Reply-To: Importance: Normal X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2800.1165 Subject: Diskless 4.8 X-BeenThere: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Gathering place for new users List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 05 Oct 2003 22:19:45 -0000 Hi, Wondering if there is someone that can help me with setting up Diskless ? We have just completed a port of TextMaker to the FreeBSD operating system and are making this available as a free download to you. TextMaker for FreeBSD is identical feature-wise to revision 392 of TextMaker for Linux and supports all x86-based FreeBSD systems starting with FreeBSD 4.8. (We simply haven't tested under older FreeBSD builds). Get the FreeBSD installation archive here: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (Please keep this URL confidential.) NOTE: Please do not pass along this installation file or pointers to it. You receive it only because you are a paying customer. We'll have free trial versions later. To activate TextMaker, please use the serial number you already received for TextMaker for Linux. -------------------------------------------------------------- Should we support FreeBSD at all? Speak up now! -------------------------------------------------------------- We have not made a final decision whether to support FreeBSD at all and whether to port more applications like PlanMaker to FreeBSD. Speak up now! If you are a FreeBSD user and want to see our software for FreeBSD, help us make a business case for it by answering the following questions: 1. Should we support FreeBSD at all? 2. Does TextMaker for FreeBSD work without flaws on your FreeBSD system? (if not, please file bug reports to beta@softmaker.de) 3. Which printed magazines do you read that cover FreeBSD? 4. Which BSD-specific web sites do you visit? 5. How can we reach FreeBSD users? How can we ensure that more FreeBSD users learn about our software? 6. On which Unix-like operating systems would you like to see TextMaker, PlanMaker and our future office suite software? Send your replies to info@softmaker.de (or simply answer this e-mail and insert your comments). We want to hear your opinion! You can participate in deciding about the future directions of our software. Firslty, is there a way to "link" interfaces by using some system variables like the one I can use for bridging interfaces ? i.e. sysctl net.link.ether.bridge_cfg=rl0,rl1. Then, according to the freebsd handbook it exist almost 500 system variables which can be read and set. The best resource for a newbie, believe it or not, is the handbook at http://www.freebsd.org/handbook. Quite possibly the second best resource is the questions mailing list, questions@freebsd.org. Be warned that it's rather high volume, should you decide to subscribe to it. There are several good books on FreeBSD, do a Google or other search and see if you can find books by Greg Lehey or Sue Blake, or others. You can even catch both of them on the mailing lists (Sue reads this one, methinks, while Greg will post to questions occasionally, but generally only on specialized RAID issues...) I'm a FreeBSD newb, but I think I understand this point well enough to answer his question. At this precise present moment, 4.9 is not -STABLE, but it was prior to the code freeze. At the current moment, I'd guess you could say that there technically is *no* -STABLE. It's currently in a transitional phase, after which it will become 4.9-RELEASE. Now, I presume at that point, that there will be a lull while any remaining issues with 4.9 -RELEASE are cleared up, after which, 5.1-CURRENT will become 5.1-STABLE and development will be branched again to begin on 6.0-CURRENT. All this assumes that they don't continue to develop the 4-STABLE line by having the versioning continue with 4.9.1-STABLE with 5.1 remaining the -CURRENT. But in either case, 4.9 will be the most current -RELEASE. Again, FreeBSD newb here, but that seems to be the way things have worked in the past. chris --- Andrew Kozak wrote: > > hrmmmmzzzzzzzzz > > Perhaps I should use a more simple approach, as I feel I have been > misquoted > > > Obviously, I was referring to 4.9-STABLE, I actually run 4.8-STABLE, and > have read the handbook, including chapter 21, I was not after the > difference > between -STABLE -CURRENT -RELEASE, I was actually referring to the link > http://www.freebsd.org/releases/4.9R/schedule.html which states that the > tree will 'unfreeze' at the end of September. I had previously written an email to you about my mouse problems. Everytime I try to run KDE, when I move the mouse the cursor moves to the upper right hand corner. I changed the protocol to AUTO in the configuration file as per the suggestions of the people who responded to my email but this did not help. I know that the mouse works(for sure). Could there be anything else that I need to change? The mouse is a PS/2 type. It even works(moves around properly) when I'm in the terminal interface screen. I've used Slackware Linux for a couple of year (Since Kernel 1.0.18) and this is my first excursion into FreeBSD. Someone is likely to mention to you that this forum (newbies@) is more of a place for people to discuss their experiences than to ask questions...the place for that it the questions@ list. However, I'll give you a hint. This is called a 'virtual desktop', and the size is set in your XFree86 Config file after the keyword "Virtual." But, I'll also mention, it's the m/l *normal* way that XFree runs a desktop. It could just be that that *other* company made us get used to something different. The Handbook section 5.4 covers this information. Your problem is that you have a "virtual desktop", one that is larger than the size of your screen. This is the unfortunate default. My preferred method of configuring XFree86 is to first run "XFree86 -configure" to detect the video card and monitor. That's only to get this information. Then I run the command line configuration utility, xf86config, manually. Answer all of the questions. Then when it comes to display modes, make sure you select and appropriate display size, and then answer NO to "Do you want a virtual screen that is larger than the physical screen?". Then once you get a XF86Config file that works, SAVE IT! But read the handbook first. I ask this because this is what the case was the first time I tried to compile a kernel under FBSD. Because if it's not there no matter who you are you can't get into it. If you don't have it you can get it with the /stand/sysinstall utility via online or off the CD if it's included on it. If you are on a dial-up connection it's going to take a while, if it came on the CD it will go pretty fast. Building a kernel under FreeBSD is pretty easy really, as mentioned the only real problem I have had is when I didn't have the source on my machine. Annelise Anderson's book FreeBSD An Open-Source Operating System For Your Personal Computer, is a very good resource for someone just getting started in FreeBSD. However with your Linux experience you should be able to make sense of the Handbook. I like using the online version @ freebsd.org, because I figure it's got the latest updates in it. I have built two kernels under 5.1 now. The first was a trimmed down version for my IBM box (which died unexpectedly) and the second for the Soyo that was purchased to replace it, because it has on-board ethernet that I didn't have supported with the first kernel. It is also available at http://people.freebsd.org/~sue/newbies/fak.html FreeBSD-Questions@FreeBSD.ORG is the place to send all questions about installing, configuring, running and using FreeBSD. All help requests are handled by FreeBSD-Questions, including newbies questions. It is particularly important to send all installation questions and answers to FreeBSD-Questions so that they only appear in one place. FreeBSD-Newbies is different. We don't ask for FreeBSD help or answer how-to questions. It is a discussion forum for newbies. FreeBSD-Newbies provides a place for new FreeBSD users to meet and covers any of the activities of newbies that are not already dealt with elsewhere. Examples include helping each other to learn more on our own, finding and using resources, problem solving techniques, how to seek help elsewhere, how to use mailing lists and which lists to use, general chat, making mistakes, boasting, sharing ideas, stories, moral (but not technical) support, and taking an active part in the FreeBSD community. We take our problems and support questions to freebsd-questions, and use freebsd-newbies to meet others who are doing the same things that we do as newbies. We can help people to use the FreeBSD mailing lists and resources, or to interact more productively with the broader FreeBSD community. These are not support questions, and not technical, so we deal with them here. Everyone can help with these new user orientation requests. One of the things we do together is learn more effective ways to find help when we need it. Here are some suggestions: When something doesn't work the way you expect 1. First look at the errata for your release of FreeBSD at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/releases/ for the latest information and security advisories. 2. Search the Handbook, FAQ, and mail archives at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/search/search.html 3. If you still have a question or problem, collect the output of `uname -a' and of any relevant program(s) and email your question to FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. Mailing lists When you have a problem that you can't solve by yourself, there's only one support mailing list and that's FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. FreeBSD-questions helps with installation and basic setup as well as more general and advanced questions. You don't have to actually join freebsd-questions before asking a question there. Replies to your question will normally be sent to you personally as well as to the list. Just make sure you have read and followed the guidelines for posting, because you might find them different to what you're used to. If you do subscribe to freebsd-questions you'll have the advantage of seeing all of the recent questions and their answers. Before you post to FreeBSD-questions, please read the guidelines at http://www.lemis.com/questions.html Many of the people who answer FreeBSD-questions are very knowledgeable, but they get frustrated when they get questions which are difficult to understand. http://www.lemis.com/email.html is worth reading too. If you're not sure that you can follow these guidelines, come back and ask the other newbies for help on how to post an effective question to the support mailing list. Maybe your question has been asked before. If you search the mailing list archives at http://www.freebsd.org/search/search.html first you might get the answer right away. It's always worth trying. Other mailing lists (http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/eresources.html#ERESOURCES-CHARTERS) cover specialised areas and many are more developer-oriented. You'll need to read their charters carefully before participating, but it's probably a good idea to ask on either -newbies or -questions for advice about where to post a more specialised question. FreeBSD-announce is a very low volume read-only list for occasional announcements, such as notice of new releases, and the Really Quick Newsletter. It's worth subscribing to FreeBSD-announce too. Manuals You'll always be expected to show that you have made some effort to use the available documentation before asking for help. That's not always as easy as it sounds! If you know what documentation you need but can't locate it, send a brief query to FreeBSD-questions. If you don't know what you need, always have trouble finding it, or can't make any sense of it when you do, ask some patient newbies to steer you in the right direction. Anyone interested in writing or reviewing documentation for FreeBSD is encouraged to join the FreeBSD Documentation Project. Details are at http://www.freebsd.org/docproj/docproj.html Other resources A resource list is available at http://www.freebsd.org/projects/newbies.html to help new and inexperienced FreeBSD users to find relevant information quickly. It includes books, on line documents and tutorials, and links to web pages that other newbies have found useful for learning. If you have a suggestion for good material to be included, please write to freebsd-newbies and tell us about it. But I have seen people asking questions here! It is quite common for people to send the wrong kind of post to a mailing list. Because we're newbies it'll certainly happen here from time to time. The best thing to do if you see a message that doesn't belong on a list is to ignore it. There's always someone around whose job it is to sort these problems out privately. The posts to the lists go straight through, whatever their content. It is going to be confusing for a little while because we're all newbies so we all make mistakes. That's OK. One thing we're going to see a fair bit is people posting questions, believing they're doing the right thing by posting here as newbies, not realising how it works. If someone answers those questions the situation will snowball. There's nothing wrong with helping someone to redirect their question to freebsd-questions, but please do so gently. There's nothing wrong with the occasional mistake either. So all questions, requests for help, etc still go to freebsd-questions as usual. Ours is more of a discussion group, a place where newbies can relax with other newbies and focus more on our successes than on our temporary imperfection. We can talk about things here that are not allowed on freebsd-questions. We're also a bit freer to make the mistakes that we need to make in order to learn. _________________________________________________________________ Mailing list membership To Subscribe to FreeBSD-Newbies: Use the easy form at http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-newbies to subscribe to the FreeBSD-Newbies mailing list, or to change your subscription details if you are already a member.
