It is explained graphically here: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/releng/article.html#AEN99 When you have updated your sources, do not forget to run a make build(world|kernel) depending on what kind of security patch was applied to make sure your kernel or binaries are actually rebuilt. As a result, the HTT kernel option no longer exists. Instead, the logical CPUs are always started so that they can handle interrupts. However, the extra logical CPUs are prevented from executing user processes by default. To enable the logical CPUs, change the value of the machdep.hlt_logical_cpus from 1 to 0. This value can also be set from the loader as a tunable of the same name. -->8--- HTH Cheers Sven -- "640 kB RAM should be enough for everyone" --Bill Gates, 1981 ------------------------------------------------------[rand. sig. #27] From owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Oct 29 19:52:45 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CD25B16A4CE; Wed, 29 Oct 2003 19:52:45 -0800 (PST) Received: from digitelone.com (mail.digitelone.com [202.138.128.1]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 32C5743FCB; Wed, 29 Oct 2003 19:52:44 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from gihl@digitelone.com) Received: from [203.175.2.234] (account gihl@digitelone.com) by digitelone.com (CommuniGate Pro WebUser 4.1.5) with HTTP id 1179859; Thu, 30 Oct 2003 11:51:43 +0800 From: "gihl@i-am-gil-agno-virtucio.ph" To: freebsd-questions@freebsd.org, freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org X-Mailer: CommuniGate Pro WebUser Interface v.4.1.5 Date: Thu, 30 Oct 2003 11:51:43 +0800 Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="ISO-8859-1"; format="flowed" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Subject: dumping the contents of a hard-drive X-BeenThere: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Gathering place for new users List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 30 Oct 2003 03:52:45 -0000 Hi. Well, if /tmp is on it's own partition, you can just omit it from your dump routine. Otherwise, set the nodump flag. See man chflags. You will have to use the -h option with dump, so you may also want to take a look at the dump man page. I don't know all the proper nomenclature as of yet. I installed, then reinstalled and re-reinstalled 5.1 on a dell gx1 with the crystal sound chip with little difficulty up until I went to do the file sharing experience with Samba and the sound thing. For now I just want to get this sound problem understood. Now according to the manual in order to load the sound device I can either kldload or configure a kernal. I understand this. What I don't understand are two things at least, when I kldload, exactly where do I need to be to do this? In what directory? I mean, when I bring up a terminal and punch in kldload snd,or snd0 it says "can't load snd, no such file or directory". I did install the src/sys files. I understand that 5.x is somewhat different than the other distros which I interpret to mean that this should be somewhat friendlier. The other thing I seem to get conflicting messages about is if I can actually just add the "device pcm" bsd/docs 16.2 to the existing kernal or do I have to totally rebuild it? Or is this one in the same? I don't mind reading the manual, it just seems as if I am overlooking something essential. So maybe if you can help me find the basics I am missing? Bit of a 'noob' myself on this one. I chose the new kernel option. You must rebuild the kernel if you intend to go the "device pcm" route. I read the docs and then did the following on my 5.1R box 6 weeks ago. quid pro quo: I've an onboard "AC97" chip, and I've run 'make buildworld' previously from a full /usr/src, so the entire world is compiled in /usr/obj. 1. Added "device pcm" to /sys/i386/conf/GENERIC. 2. Ran "make buildkernel". 3. Ran "make installkernel". 4. Rebooted. As for kldload, I've not done that. Have a look at kldload(8) and related manpages. Also, FWIW, the sound device in 5.1 is /dev/dsp, not /dev/snd. Most of the possibilities for kldload(8) are in /boot/defaults/loader.conf --- look at the section headed by "Sound Modules"... there's a "snd_driver_load" that loads all sound mods, might be the quickest way... Before fixing the startx issue (I think startx has been overwritten by the fluxconf->XFree86-libraries-4.3.0 installation), I tested xinit after setting the root setuid bit of the X server=20 (which on my machine points to XF86_SVGA).According to the xinit error,"I should be using Xwrapper to start the server or xdm. We strongly advise against making the server SUID root!". So,with the setuid bit set, xinit works, but the elegant solution would be to use Xwrapper. How can I use Xwrapper ? Does it accept a server name to execute ? When you say 'runlevel 5' do you mean the kernel securelevels=20 (i remember runlevels used as boot levels in linux) ? It is also available at http://people.freebsd.org/~sue/newbies/fak.html FreeBSD-Questions@FreeBSD.ORG is the place to send all questions about installing, configuring, running and using FreeBSD. All help requests are handled by FreeBSD-Questions, including newbies questions. It is particularly important to send all installation questions and answers to FreeBSD-Questions so that they only appear in one place. FreeBSD-Newbies is different. We don't ask for FreeBSD help or answer how-to questions. It is a discussion forum for newbies. FreeBSD-Newbies provides a place for new FreeBSD users to meet and covers any of the activities of newbies that are not already dealt with elsewhere. Examples include helping each other to learn more on our own, finding and using resources, problem solving techniques, how to seek help elsewhere, how to use mailing lists and which lists to use, general chat, making mistakes, boasting, sharing ideas, stories, moral (but not technical) support, and taking an active part in the FreeBSD community. We take our problems and support questions to freebsd-questions, and use freebsd-newbies to meet others who are doing the same things that we do as newbies. We can help people to use the FreeBSD mailing lists and resources, or to interact more productively with the broader FreeBSD community. These are not support questions, and not technical, so we deal with them here. Everyone can help with these new user orientation requests. One of the things we do together is learn more effective ways to find help when we need it. Here are some suggestions: When something doesn't work the way you expect 1. First look at the errata for your release of FreeBSD at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/releases/ for the latest information and security advisories. 2. Search the Handbook, FAQ, and mail archives at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/search/search.html 3. If you still have a question or problem, collect the output of `uname -a' and of any relevant program(s) and email your question to FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. Mailing lists When you have a problem that you can't solve by yourself, there's only one support mailing list and that's FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. FreeBSD-questions helps with installation and basic setup as well as more general and advanced questions. You don't have to actually join freebsd-questions before asking a question there. Replies to your question will normally be sent to you personally as well as to the list. Just make sure you have read and followed the guidelines for posting, because you might find them different to what you're used to. If you do subscribe to freebsd-questions you'll have the advantage of seeing all of the recent questions and their answers. Before you post to FreeBSD-questions, please read the guidelines at http://www.lemis.com/questions.html Many of the people who answer FreeBSD-questions are very knowledgeable, but they get frustrated when they get questions which are difficult to understand. http://www.lemis.com/email.html is worth reading too. If you're not sure that you can follow these guidelines, come back and ask the other newbies for help on how to post an effective question to the support mailing list. Maybe your question has been asked before. If you search the mailing list archives at http://www.freebsd.org/search/search.html first you might get the answer right away. It's always worth trying. Other mailing lists (http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/eresources.html#ERESOURCES-CHARTERS) cover specialised areas and many are more developer-oriented. You'll need to read their charters carefully before participating, but it's probably a good idea to ask on either -newbies or -questions for advice about where to post a more specialised question. FreeBSD-announce is a very low volume read-only list for occasional announcements, such as notice of new releases, and the Really Quick Newsletter. It's worth subscribing to FreeBSD-announce too. Manuals You'll always be expected to show that you have made some effort to use the available documentation before asking for help. That's not always as easy as it sounds! If you know what documentation you need but can't locate it, send a brief query to FreeBSD-questions. If you don't know what you need, always have trouble finding it, or can't make any sense of it when you do, ask some patient newbies to steer you in the right direction. Anyone interested in writing or reviewing documentation for FreeBSD is encouraged to join the FreeBSD Documentation Project. Details are at http://www.freebsd.org/docproj/docproj.html Other resources A resource list is available at http://www.freebsd.org/projects/newbies.html to help new and inexperienced FreeBSD users to find relevant information quickly. It includes books, on line documents and tutorials, and links to web pages that other newbies have found useful for learning. If you have a suggestion for good material to be included, please write to freebsd-newbies and tell us about it. But I have seen people asking questions here! It is quite common for people to send the wrong kind of post to a mailing list. Because we're newbies it'll certainly happen here from time to time. The best thing to do if you see a message that doesn't belong on a list is to ignore it. There's always someone around whose job it is to sort these problems out privately. The posts to the lists go straight through, whatever their content. It is going to be confusing for a little while because we're all newbies so we all make mistakes. That's OK. One thing we're going to see a fair bit is people posting questions, believing they're doing the right thing by posting here as newbies, not realising how it works. If someone answers those questions the situation will snowball. There's nothing wrong with helping someone to redirect their question to freebsd-questions, but please do so gently. There's nothing wrong with the occasional mistake either. So all questions, requests for help, etc still go to freebsd-questions as usual. Ours is more of a discussion group, a place where newbies can relax with other newbies and focus more on our successes than on our temporary imperfection. We can talk about things here that are not allowed on freebsd-questions. We're also a bit freer to make the mistakes that we need to make in order to learn. _________________________________________________________________ Mailing list membership To Subscribe to FreeBSD-Newbies: Use the easy form at http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-newbies to subscribe to the FreeBSD-Newbies mailing list, or to change your subscription details if you are already a member. Maybe someone could help or point me in the right direction? Here goes: I've got FreeBSD 4.7 set up with 2 netcards. One is 192.168.99.2 and the other 195.15.176.2 and I've got routing between them enabled. I cannot ping the 192.168.99.2 card even from the console. Well, yes, the rc.conf only gets parsed during start-up. You could basically execute the rc.network script, but preferred method is to activate those things manually via ifconfig. Respectively, first test with ifconfig, if it does what you want, and then edit t rc.conf to make sure that after a reboot all stays the same. You want to do: ifconfig rlx 192.168.99.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 x= Number of card the route shall be automatically set up. BTW: This normally goes above the ordinary newbie-horizon, those caliber is better suited on -questions... Flush the routing table '#route flush' 2. Edit your /etc/rc.conf to establish agreement with the first 2 sets of digits for the ips of the NICs in your machine. Unless you are bridging two networks there is no real reason to scheme completly different ips. Instaed of using 192.168.99.2 and 196.15.176.2, use 192.168.99.2 and 192.168.98.2. The 196.15.. could cause you grief as it is not an approved address for use on an internal network. 3. If you are bridging, make sure the configuration is correct(see the handbook) 4. If you really want this machine to serve nfs you'll want to think about enabling the portmapper dameon for 4.x or the bind utility for 5.x. 5. You may want to clean house on your rc.conf file as it looks like there is some extra stuff in there. Regards, RC > I've searched high and low, but can't find an answer to this problem.
