The hardware list on http://www.freebsd.org/platforms/sparc.html lists
the Ultra 1 as unsupported. What exactly is the problem? What is the
difference between a plain Ultra 1 (unsupported) and an Ultra 1e
(supported)? I'm asking because I may be able to get my hands on an
Ultra 1. I don't know if it has a happymac, but I have a couple lying
around, so that shouldn't be a problem.

I think the disk controller isn't supported, 5.0R boots fine on a U1/167
here but no disks are found (Sorry I don't have a dmesg).

Ah, OK, so we don't support fas. NetBSD does, I might find some time
to try porting their driver.
How's our sbus support btw? I know that many drivers lack sbus
attachments, but are there any other issues with sbus or is it just a
matter of updating the drivers?

I can confirm that NetBSD and OpenBSD won't boot on the machine at all.
If there is anyway I could help with testing/etc to get FreeBSD running
I would be happy to help.

Weird. It's listed as supported by NetBSD at least.
It seems FreeBSD should be able to netboot on these machines, and I
have a spare TurboGX so I may even get X running (I don't think
XFree86 supports Creator cards). Worth a try...

No fas. Plain ultra 1 has lance ethernet which is supposed to be supported
by the lnc driver, but it doesn't look to use busdma and it doesn't have an
sbus front end. Ultra 1E has hme. If you've got an sbus hme card you should
be able to netboot a plain ultra 1.
Scott Long is working on a driver for fas, its similar to the chipsets
supported by the amd(4) driver. The isp driver works if you can find
an sbus isp card.

sbus support is solid, anything that's available is sbus that we have
a portable driver for just needs a front end.

Not quite accurate -- it boots on a U1E/167
^
enterprise -- has 10/100 HME
Ethernet vs. Lance.
The difference between a U1 and a U1e is 1. NIC: 10/100Mbit hme(4) vs.
10Mbit Lance, 2. fas wide scsi. The U1e has the NIC and SCSI of a U2.
U1e (and U2) are supported for diskless only. scottl is working on
fas(4) for u2/u1e.

Uh, I've booted both NetBSD and OpenBSD on my U1(non-e)/167 many times.

The U of O has a bunch of old Ultras: plain Ultra 1s, at least one
Ultra Enterprise 1, Ultra 1 Creators, Ultra 1 Creator3Ds, Ultra 5s and
a handful of Ultra 10s. The only ones with 10 Mbps NICs are the very
oldest plain 1s and the Enterprise. All the others have happymeals.
I suspect the truth here is closer to "David's U1 has a Lance NIC and
narrow SCSI controller" than to "all non-Enterprise U1s have Lance
NICs and narrow SCSI controllers"
In any case, I have at a spare happymeal NIC (two if I decomission my
SS20 or downgrade it to the onboard Lance), so this is not an issue.

I never said "all non-Enterprise U1s" -- I carefully only spoke of U1 and
U1e, saying nothing about Creators. I've never seen a U1e with only
10Mbit Lance Ethernet. Since you have, I'd love to get the part number
of it so I can look it up in Sun's docs.

I'm having a particularly strange issue with MySQL running on an Ultra5 with a
recent build of -CURRENT (uname -a is: FreeBSD amber.tachief.com 5.0-CURRENT
FreeBSD 5.0-CURRENT #1: Sun Mar 2 01:32:07 GMT 2003
nick@amber.tachief.com:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/AMBER sparc64).
I can INSERT data into a table fine, but when I perform a SELECT query on the
same table no results are returned. However, if I try the same INSERT
statement again with a duplicate primary key, it acknowledges the dupe and the
INSERT fails. Again, a subsequent SELECT returns no data.
I'm using MySQL 4.0.10 compiled and installed from ports with no special
options or configuration directives.
A snapshot of the same database running under the same version of MySQL but
under -STABLE on x86 works fine.
Any clues?

Cheers for the suggestion but I'm afraid not - no data is dumped.
