This page contains information about porting FreeBSD to Compaq Alpha - systems.

+

Introduction

+ The Alpha microprocessor, was originally developed by DEC, introduced + in 1992. At this time, Alpha was regarded as fastest CPU in the world. + Compaq, which bought DEC, announced that computers using Alpha would be phased out + by 2004 in favour of Intel's Itanium. Hewlett-Packard, new owner of + Compaq announced to support the Alpha series for a few more years but this will be the end of the lifetime. + Intels IA-64 will be the replacement of this series. + + Alpha is a Tier +1 architecture - fully supported by FreeBSD. + +

Out of interest should these sorts of things be filed under www or ${ARCH}. Other observations since I submitted this, NetBSD officially renamed their port to NetBSD/amd64 which adds a little weight to the direction I've been seeing in cvs and in general. This failed due to me cleaning up some of the stored spam. The script currently just globs everything together when it's first invoked, and then assumes that it will be able to open everything it saw. I've put together a little patch that does two things, one of which may be stupid. I also don't know TCL in any depth, so please could someone who does review it. It's at http://people.freebsd.org/~ceri/go.tcl.diff. The first part of the patch simply skips a PR if it can't be opened (this is the bit that may be stupid), while the second part makes sure that only real PRs are added to the list in the first place (the above file shouldn't have been considered anyway).
