I'm using FreeBSD 5.2.1 (i386 AMD Athlon). Is your driver already in the kernel? What option does it need for kernel compilation? If it's not in the official kernel, can I put it in there by myself? (I downloaded the archive you pointed to in the mail above). .... besides, I just tried to compile the kernel module: %make Warning: Object directory not changed from original /usr/home/raphael/tmp/if_saue/modules/saue cc -O -pipe -mcpu=pentiumpro -D_KERNEL -Wall -Wredundant-decls -Wnested-externs -Wstrict-prototypes -Wmissing-prototypes -Wpointer-arith -Winline -Wcast-qual -fformat-extensions -std=c99 -DKLD_MODULE -nostdinc -I- -I. -I@ -I@/../include -finline-limit=15000 -fno-common -mno-align-long-strings -mpreferred-stack-boundary=2 -ffreestanding -Wall -Wredundant-decls -Wnested-externs -Wstrict-prototypes -Wmissing-prototypes -Wpointer-arith -Winline -Wcast-qual -fformat-extensions -std=c99 -c /usr/home/raphael/tmp/if_saue/modules/saue/../../dev/usb/if_saue.c In file included from /usr/home/raphael/tmp/if_saue/dev/usb/if_saue.c:66: @/dev/usb/usbdivar.h:127: error: syntax error before "bus_dma_tag_t" /usr/home/raphael/tmp/if_saue/dev/usb/if_saue.c: In function `saue_match': /usr/home/raphael/tmp/if_saue/dev/usb/if_saue.c:137: warning: implicit declaration of function `usbd_get_string' /usr/home/raphael/tmp/if_saue/dev/usb/if_saue.c: In function `saue_attach': /usr/home/raphael/tmp/if_saue/dev/usb/if_saue.c:202: error: structure has no member named `if_unit' /usr/home/raphael/tmp/if_saue/dev/usb/if_saue.c:203: error: structure has no member named `if_name' /usr/home/raphael/tmp/if_saue/dev/usb/if_saue.c: In function `saue_ioctl': /usr/home/raphael/tmp/if_saue/dev/usb/if_saue.c:668: warning: unused variable `sc' *** Error code 1 Thanks for your time... and for writing that driver :) Raphael PS: I'm not registered to the hardware list, please send mail to me directly (cc). Of the 15 or so servers we've built for customers using Hitachi drives over the last 2 years, 6 of them came back after about a year of operation with catastrophic drive failures. And unfortunately it wasn't just a bad batch of drives - they were manufactured at entirely different times. Sooooo, I guess give the two options, I'd say Seagate ;-) -------------------------------------------------- Jason A. Crome Senior Software Engineer, DEVNET, Inc. I don't have any experience with Hitachi (or IBM, except for that 2.5 inch laptop drive in my firewall box). I've always had good luck with Seagate SCSI drives, except for a couple of early failures of bottom of the line Hawks just before that product line was phased out. I was happy with the earlier Hawks, though. There are some drives that draw a lot of power and get hot, like the early Barracudas and more recent bleeding edge drives, but I've always purchased the lower power drives, including the 10K RPM 1" high U160 Cheetah that I bought a few months back that only draws about 10 W, which is quite acceptable. It doesn't have any special cooling requirements. Pretty much all the WD SCSI drives that I've used (purchased by a former employer) have developed bearing problems after a while that make them sound like a dental drill. Not the the right click button thingy yet, but the rest seems to be working on FreeBSD-current. You can get it from: ftp://ftp2.za.freebsd.org/pub/local/ The files are: README.bin - describe how to use the binaries touchkit-bin.tgz - binaries for FreeBSD-current README.src - describe how to compile bits and pieces touchkit-src.tgz - the modified touchkit source tree touchkit.diff - a diff between the original and my code uep.tgz - the source for the usb driver Note, I have tried to make everything in the touchkit compile, only the pieces that I have needed. As you have heard from the others already, Hitachi is not a good choice. We use Fujitsu sind the mid-eighties without any problems except some early failures. Fujitsu did verz bad IDE drives but their SCSI drives are outstanding good. We also have one customer who took Seagates as Fujitsu drives were out of stock that time and he also has no problems. I can say nothing about Hitachi, but with Seagate's IDEs I've had troubles on 5.x (the last one last night). It's seems to be something about ATA timings; the results are file systems completely messed-up after 1 of 2 reboots; also it depends on firmware revision of the HDD in question and FreeBSD version (e.g. I've used one 40G HDD as my boot disk for a few months on 5.0, but now it ain't working with 5.2.1). But with the SCSI Seagates I've had no problems, always worked well, even in some warm places. -- IOnut Unregistered ;) FreeBSD "user" From owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Jun 30 13:30:38 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 06F9016A4CE; Wed, 30 Jun 2004 13:30:38 +0000 (GMT) Received: from mail.distrust.net (mail.distrust.net [69.93.230.10]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id ACE4343D2D; Wed, 30 Jun 2004 13:30:37 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from dsze@alumni.uwaterloo.ca) Received: from eeyore.distrust.net (CPE000021e92a64-CM014320019900.cpe.net.cable.rogers.com [24.112.29.214]) (authenticated bits=0) by mail.distrust.net (8.12.11/8.12.11) with ESMTP id i5UDU3aI037840 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=DES-CBC3-SHA bits=168 verify=NOT); Wed, 30 Jun 2004 08:30:04 -0500 (CDT) (envelope-from dsze@alumni.uwaterloo.ca) Message-Id: <6.1.2.0.2.20040630092141.02c54ec0@mail.distrust.net> X-Sender: dsze@engmail.uwaterloo.ca X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Version 6.1.2.0 Date: Wed, 30 Jun 2004 09:30:04 -0400 To: "Marc G. If you will be using a motherboard with an LSI Logic chipset (mpt driver under FreeBSD), definitely do _not_ get Hitachi/IBM drives. There's a weird interaction that causes the OS not to boot if there is more than one Hitachi drive attached to an mpt controller. A single drive works fine. The build quality isnt fantastic, but the price isnt either. If you are going the P4 or Xeon route, I would use a Supermicro case and board personally, and probably go for Chenbro or similar for AMD. Have you tried it more than once? Maybe there is just a startup problem. I have used both 4pcal and 25pcal and it does make a difference to the accuracy of the "mouse" pointer placement on the screen when you touch the screen. The only important thing is that you have to run 4pcal and/or 25pcal before you load tpaneld because both try to use the uep device. > Everyting else seems to work like a charm so far. I think the usb driver, uep, should go into the main source and the rest should be a port. At the moment I'm preparing for a 10 day trip in Aug to Botswana and the Caprivi part of Namibia, so I have some other things with higher priority. I needed the touchscreen for the car computer tgough. :-) I'll look at getting the uep driver into FreeBSD. The logs reveal very little (presumably because it can't write logging information to disk!), there was no Panic so I don't have /var/crash information (Again i suspect even if there was a panic, if it can't write to disk...). I do remember seeing a message along the lines of "swappager: Timeout waiting on twe0" or similar on the console. This is why I suspect the problem is related to the 3Ware card, especially given that all disk writes just cease. I've got the box logging on serial console now so if it happens again I'll have the exact error messages. The machine is a Dual Xeon 2.8GHz with 3Gb ram, running RELENG_4_9 (-p9). I've attached dmesg output at the end of the email. Sadly due to the fact this is a production box, debugging options are limited. So basically my questions are: 1. Is anyone else experiencing similar problems with the 8506 Card? 2. How stable are the twe drivers, and is it likely that the symptoms I've listed are caused by the 3Ware Card/Drivers? 3. Is it worth upgrading to the 9000 series card, given that this is a production box and stability is vital? I noticed on the 3Ware website recently: "For 3ware 7000 and 8000 series RAID controllers FreeBSD drivers are beta." At the time we bought the card, there was no such message on their website and reports were that the card worked fine on FreeBSD. Thanks again for any help/advice on the matter. dmesg output: Copyright (c) 1992-2003 The FreeBSD Project.
