Dump of the kernel provided this: _mtx_lock_sleep+0x77 (kern_mutex.c, 521) Get_softc+0x80 (atapi-cam.c, 776) Atapi_cam_reinit_bus+0x16 (atapi-cam.c, 195) I read through the code to see where the mutex is initialized and found that the only place it is done is atapi_cam_attach_bus. Below is my modified code: static struct atapi_xpt_softc * get_softc(struct ata_channel *ata_ch) { struct atapi_xpt_softc *scp = NULL; /* There could be a race condition where the atapi mtx has not been initialized */ if (mtx_initialized(&atapicam_softc_mtx) == 0) mtx_init(&atapicam_softc_mtx, "ATAPI/CAM softc mutex", NULL, MTX_DEF); mtx_lock(&atapicam_softc_mtx); LIST_FOREACH(scp, &all_buses, chain) { if (scp->ata_ch == ata_ch) break; } mtx_unlock(&atapicam_softc_mtx); return scp; } After that it booted no problem and burned a DVD like a champ. I don't think this change can impact the rest of the system, but can someone let me know as this is going to be a production box. Let me know if you need anymore information as I have trace and the kernel.debug (burned on a dvd as my trophy). This happened on both i386 for me and amd64 with 5.4, = both using SMP and not for dual processor support (dell sc1425) with a = QSI-DVD burner.  Dump of the kernel provided = this:

_mtx_lock_sleep+0x77 (kern_mutex.c, 521)

Get_softc+0x80 (atapi-cam.c, = 776)

Atapi_cam_reinit_bus+0x16 (atapi-cam.c, = 195)

I read through the code to see where the mutex is initialized and found that the only place it is done is = atapi_cam_attach_bus.  I guess its possible for the code to reach the atapi_cam_reinit_bus = which calls get_softc before the bus is attached?  Anyway, I changed get_softc = to look to see if the mutex is initialized before locking and that did the = trick.  Below is my modified code:

static struct atapi_xpt_softc = *

get_softc(struct ata_channel *ata_ch) = {

    struct atapi_xpt_softc *scp =3D = NULL;

    /* There could be a race condition = where the atapi mtx has not been initialized */

    if (mtx_initialized(&atapicam_softc_mtx) =3D=3D = 0)

        mtx_init(&atapicam_softc_mtx, "ATAPI/CAM softc mutex", = NULL, MTX_DEF);

    = mtx_lock(&atapicam_softc_mtx);

    LIST_FOREACH(scp, &all_buses, = chain) {

         =    if (scp->ata_ch =3D=3D ata_ch)

         =        break;

    }

    = mtx_unlock(&atapicam_softc_mtx);

    return = scp;

}

After that it booted no problem and burned a DVD like = a champ.

I don’t think this change can impact the rest = of the system, but can someone let me know as this is going to be a production = box.  Let me know if you need anymore information as I have trace and the kernel.debug (burned on a dvd as my = trophy).

A little ATA trouble. I've been running an NFS client-driven stress test on a NFS exported file system. It seems just fine unless the FS is hosted on a drive attached to a PCI SATA controller, which is a Promise SATAII150 TX2plus. After a short period of time with the stress test (as little as a few seconds, as long as a minute or two), the exported drive simply hangs, eventually causing writes to timing out on the NFS client The drive device path /dev/ad4 remains visible in /dev, but calls to access the drive do not seem to return. 'umount'ing the filesystem on the hung drive freezes all ATA devices and hangs the system (I am not overclocked). A hard reboot is required to bring things back to normal. Not sure if data is being lost or not, but fsck always finds FS errors, and self reboot is not possible with the console reporting failed buffer writes. I have repeated the stress test using a filesystem on ATA100 drives hosted by the mainboard's VIA 8235 without any problems, so it seems to be specific to the PCI Promise Controller and it's drives. The drive itself is a Western Digital (WDC WD2500JD-50GBB0 02.05D02). Motherboard is a KT3 Ultra 2 with an AMD 1800+ on it. I'm happy to dig into it further and provide more specifics, but need some experienced advice as to where to instrument. >How-To-Repeat: Export, via NFS, a filesystem that is on a drive hosted by the SATA controller. Stress the filesystem (I used an import of mp3 files using iTunes). After a minute or two, (repeatable) the the kernel outputs "ad4: FAILURE - SETFEATURES SET TRANSFER MODE timed out", and the drive becomes unresponsive, halting the NFS activity. A subsequent 'umount' of the file system hangs all ATA devices on the system, preventing login or logout. If "reboot" is issued before the 'umount', the reboot process starts but hangs while flushing buffers. >Fix: >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Sep 20 11:22:51 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: i386@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E27D116A41F; Tue, 20 Sep 2005 11:22:51 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: from smarthost2.sentex.ca (smarthost2.sentex.ca [205.211.164.50]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 61A9343D45; Tue, 20 Sep 2005 11:22:51 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: from smtp2.sentex.ca (smtp2.sentex.ca [199.212.134.9]) by smarthost2.sentex.ca (8.13.3/8.13.3) with ESMTP id j8KBMooS077385; Tue, 20 Sep 2005 07:22:50 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: from freebsd-current.sentex.ca (freebsd-current.sentex.ca [64.7.128.98]) by smtp2.sentex.ca (8.13.3/8.13.3) with ESMTP id j8KBMod1010615; Tue, 20 Sep 2005 07:22:50 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: by freebsd-current.sentex.ca (Postfix, from userid 666) id 232207302F; Tue, 20 Sep 2005 07:22:50 -0400 (EDT) Sender: FreeBSD Tinderbox From: FreeBSD Tinderbox To: FreeBSD Tinderbox , , Precedence: bulk Message-Id: <20050920112250.232207302F@freebsd-current.sentex.ca> Date: Tue, 20 Sep 2005 07:22:50 -0400 (EDT) X-Virus-Scanned: ClamAV version 0.85.1, clamav-milter version 0.85 on clamscanner3 X-Virus-Status: Clean X-Scanned-By: MIMEDefang 2.51 on 205.211.164.50 Cc: Subject: [head tinderbox] failure on i386/i386 X-BeenThere: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 List-Id: I386-specific issues for FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 20 Sep 2005 11:22:52 -0000 TB --- 2005-09-20 10:09:46 - tinderbox 2.3 running on freebsd-current.sentex.ca TB --- 2005-09-20 10:09:46 - starting HEAD tinderbox run for i386/i386 TB --- 2005-09-20 10:09:46 - cleaning the object tree TB --- 2005-09-20 10:10:12 - checking out the source tree TB --- 2005-09-20 10:10:12 - cd /tinderbox/HEAD/i386/i386 TB --- 2005-09-20 10:10:12 - /usr/bin/cvs -f -R -q -d/home/ncvs update -Pd -A src TB --- 2005-09-20 10:15:56 - building world (CFLAGS=-O2 -pipe) TB --- 2005-09-20 10:15:56 - cd /src TB --- 2005-09-20 10:15:56 - /usr/bin/make -B buildworld >>> Rebuilding the temporary build tree >>> stage 1.1: legacy release compatibility shims >>> stage 1.2: bootstrap tools >>> stage 2.1: cleaning up the object tree >>> stage 2.2: rebuilding the object tree >>> stage 2.3: build tools >>> stage 3: cross tools >>> stage 4.1: building includes >>> stage 4.2: building libraries >>> stage 4.3: make dependencies >>> stage 4.4: building everything TB --- 2005-09-20 11:19:43 - building generic kernel (COPTFLAGS=-O2 -pipe) TB --- 2005-09-20 11:19:43 - cd /src TB --- 2005-09-20 11:19:43 - /usr/bin/make buildkernel KERNCONF=GENERIC >>> Kernel build for GENERIC started on Tue Sep 20 11:19:43 UTC 2005 >>> stage 1: configuring the kernel >>> stage 2.1: cleaning up the object tree >>> stage 2.2: rebuilding the object tree >>> stage 2.3: build tools >>> stage 3.1: making dependencies >>> stage 3.2: building everything [...] /src/sys/dev/aic/aic_pccard.c:199: error: initializer element is not constant /src/sys/dev/aic/aic_pccard.c:199: error: (near initialization for `aic_pccard_methods[3]') /src/sys/dev/aic/aic_pccard.c:200: error: initializer element is not constant /src/sys/dev/aic/aic_pccard.c:200: error: (near initialization for `aic_pccard_methods[4]') /src/sys/dev/aic/aic_pccard.c:201: error: initializer element is not constant /src/sys/dev/aic/aic_pccard.c:201: error: (near initialization for `aic_pccard_methods[5]') /src/sys/dev/aic/aic_pccard.c:203: error: initializer element is not constant /src/sys/dev/aic/aic_pccard.c:203: error: (near initialization for `aic_pccard_methods[6]') *** Error code 1 Stop in /obj/src/sys/GENERIC. *** Error code 1 Stop in /src. *** Error code 1 Stop in /src. It just uses 'westell.com' as domain name because your router's dhcp server told it to. There is probably a configuration option on your router that lets you specify a different domain name. If you did not create a user during installation, simply log in as root and create a user for yourself. If you weren't asked for a root password during installation, just press enter at the password prompt, and immediately set a root password with 'passwd root'. Since then either the card has not worked or in this case since 5.x and now 6.x the card "works" but there are no devices in the mixer so you have no volume. Mixer rec is currently set to 0:0 Recording source: mic this might not be a problem if say, for example, you dont listen to mp3's, watch pirated dvd, play pron divx, shoot off a quick game of Enemy Territory or watch some nifty flash web sites. This same problem has been reported on other PR's for other laptop brands and seems to pretty consistant. >How-To-Repeat: own a laptop with a maestro sound card and install fbsd >Fix: >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted:
