On my H^HDell laptop, which seems to behave much the same as your Averatec, the volume and mute buttons actually generate X events, so I mapped the key codes to the corresponding XF86Audio* symbols and bound those to actions in my window manager, which then runs a script to poke mixer(8). $.02, /Mikko From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Dec 27 04:12:15 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9F4FC16A41F for ; Tue, 27 Dec 2005 04:12:15 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from jwbcorp@gmail.com) Received: from zproxy.gmail.com (zproxy.gmail.com [64.233.162.196]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 18EF343D46 for ; Tue, 27 Dec 2005 04:12:15 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from jwbcorp@gmail.com) Received: by zproxy.gmail.com with SMTP id 8so1251181nzo for ; Mon, 26 Dec 2005 20:12:14 -0800 (PST) DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; q=dns; c=nofws; s=beta; d=gmail.com; h=received:message-id:date:from:reply-to:to:subject:mime-version:content-type; b=AetsuFAckdngNX6brxHoUTTg7wpxI8ZDvj+UTiQb/M4vjtGT0t2SswG3vyvCuC1BVuhkNOwx78bOFwcKcI99YiGz8sR87OzhCHKmodGW26qrJB3p6QJ0N9nebXSIMrP1XsJ+BaMjRVrPcTSA+SnNtOw29InjuIvD1xEbcyy8JfE= Received: by 10.64.196.3 with SMTP id t3mr1279774qbf; Mon, 26 Dec 2005 20:12:14 -0800 (PST) Received: by 10.65.44.4 with HTTP; Mon, 26 Dec 2005 20:12:14 -0800 (PST) Message-ID: Date: Mon, 26 Dec 2005 22:12:14 -0600 From: =?ISO-8859-1?Q?Ing=2E_=B7JC=B7_Del_Valle=2E?= To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Disposition: inline X-Content-Filtered-By: Mailman/MimeDel 2.1.5 Subject: Hi!, I wanna an Averatec X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: JwbCorp@gmail.com List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 27 Dec 2005 04:12:15 -0000 Hello! When the kernel boot, after the boot menu, I get something like config 1 on pccard0 NMI ISA a1, EISA ff RAM parity error, likely hardware failure. Fatal trap 19: non-maskable interrupt trap while in kernel mode The strange thing is that a quick grep through the sources seems to point a= t the code for amd64, and it shouldn't as I don't have one. The faulty process is "swapper". I saw, after browsing the mailling-list, that some people had this problem on other machines and attributed it to the Firewire controller. Has anyone made any progress on this and found a simpler solution than compiling a special kernel and making your own install-cd? Sincerely, Guillaume. I ran it only with the memory extention, onc= e again it failed. Other people, even on this very mailing-list, have described those problems a while ago. Maybe I should add that this problem occurs when detecting the Firewire devices. Is there a way to start a kernel without loading the firewire manager? Once the system is installed, I know what to do... Naturally, the price is even a bit lower now than when I got mine: http://www.refurbdepot.com/productdetails2.cfm?Product_ID=4066 You can also order it here for a similar price: http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=AV1020ED1-R&cpc=SCH&srm=0 I chose refurbdepot however because geeks.com is in California, as am I, which means I'd have to pay about $60 sales tax on top of the base price and shipping costs. This wasn't the case with Refurbdepot since they're in New York. Even with shipping, it was still cheaper for me to get order it there, and they shipped it pretty quickly. -Bill -- ============================================================================= -Bill Paul (510) 749-2329 | Senior Engineer, Master of Unix-Fu wpaul@windriver.com | Wind River Systems ============================================================================= you're just BEGGING to face the moose ============================================================================= From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Dec 28 19:32:26 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: mobile@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F28A316A41F for ; Wed, 28 Dec 2005 19:32:25 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from imp@bsdimp.com) Received: from harmony.bsdimp.com (vc4-2-0-87.dsl.netrack.net [199.45.160.85]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E30AC43D7F for ; Wed, 28 Dec 2005 19:32:23 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from imp@bsdimp.com) Received: from localhost (localhost.village.org [127.0.0.1] (may be forged)) by harmony.bsdimp.com (8.13.3/8.13.3) with ESMTP id jBSJV1RE034874; Wed, 28 Dec 2005 12:31:02 -0700 (MST) (envelope-from imp@bsdimp.com) Date: Wed, 28 Dec 2005 12:31:12 -0700 (MST) Message-Id: <20051228.123112.08421156.imp@bsdimp.com> To: chris@unixpages.org From: "M. Thus far I am satisfied with just about everything that I have been able to accomplish on freebsd. However, I tried setting the high resolution console using the raster graphics on freebsd and this has had some undesirable results. After recompiling my kernel and getting the resolution of the console to 1024x768 I tried playing music on my xmms player and switching between xorg and the virtual console and there would be some degradation of the sound. I am not sure whether there is an increased load on the kernel whenever switching between the two interfaces but I have notice some spiking on xload when switching between the two. I took a friends advice and increased the pcm buffersize and the irqrate but this has had no effect in improving the sound quality. I have noticed as well that when reading long files, there is also a degradation of sound quality. For example while reading NOTES in /usr/src/sys/i386/conf the sound from xmms, which was being played on xfce, would slow down as I paged through the document or when scrolled through line by line using the arrowpad. I am not sure what is causing the problem or why it is behaving in this manner but I would be more than happy to provide any extra information about the problem. I had an opportunity to scan through the mailing lists for similar problems but did not find one that quite fit this descritption. Any assistance would be appreciated Mervin McDougall __________________________________ Yahoo! for Good - Make a difference this year. http://brand.yahoo.com/cybergivingweek2005/ From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Dec 30 06:15:30 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 63E2716A420 for ; Fri, 30 Dec 2005 06:15:30 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from mcd_advisory@yahoo.com) Received: from web30909.mail.mud.yahoo.com (web30909.mail.mud.yahoo.com [68.142.200.162]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id DE62F43D48 for ; Fri, 30 Dec 2005 06:15:29 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from mcd_advisory@yahoo.com) Received: (qmail 80904 invoked by uid 60001); 30 Dec 2005 06:15:29 -0000 DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; q=dns; c=nofws; s=s1024; d=yahoo.com; h=Message-ID:Received:Date:From:Subject:To:In-Reply-To:MIME-Version:Content-Type:Content-Transfer-Encoding; b=IWtiUL9krWpbEFKI/3h9KK/aNEXnsIhBaPn38eTx9eSXOD1B6DzuqLynzTvTQmZ89g1SFNyISgxjbfpBRyxDveC2hfvhTxXX8ADh1y9IamNcXwa9cQxaPWIFy361iAToAbLXKFBR7cF47bQ94vtfK/ve3CyzzE1+ZIboHQyqSI0= ; Message-ID: <20051230061529.80902.qmail@web30909.mail.mud.yahoo.com> Received: from [206.113.106.52] by web30909.mail.mud.yahoo.com via HTTP; Thu, 29 Dec 2005 22:15:29 PST Date: Thu, 29 Dec 2005 22:15:29 -0800 (PST) From: Mervin McDougall To: Eric Kjeldergaard , freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org In-Reply-To: <200512301453.18314.kjelderg@gmail.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Cc: Subject: Re: Getting High resolution console and Xorg to coexist X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 30 Dec 2005 06:15:30 -0000 --- Eric Kjeldergaard wrote: > On Friday 30 December 2005 08:31, Mervin McDougall > wrote: > > Hi all > > I recently installed freebsd 6.0 on my laptop, a > > compaq presario 2100. I have tried downloading different version of linux and I have noticed that linux does not suffer from the same problem. I am not sure how linux gets around the problem however. I am not sure whether it is because of the framebuffer, or how the sound system is integrated into the kernel but it does. I took the opportunity to try out your proposed procedure but I had not change in the performance. I still have the sound degradation. I do appreciate the assistance though. Guess I am going to have to search a bit longer for this one Mervin McDougall __________________________________________ Yahoo! DSL – Something to write home about. I am rare switch vty from X to console and bac, but=20 when I did it I always experience some significant delay (usually 1-3 sec, already reported here some times ago). Sometimes instead of delay I get lockup - system freezes and do not answer any activity. Probability of frees grow with delay time (looks like). Delay time is grow with system load (looks like). I spent some time pondering on the problem and a friend of mine and I thought the solution to the problem is one of two things. Either there was a redesign of the syscons driver for the high resolution console or perhaps the use of a different sound arhitechture. So, I decided to take the easy route and try out the 4front OSS drivers for freebsd. Since then the problem has been fixed. There is no longer any problem with switching between Xorg and high resolution console. I suggest you try it. http://www.opensound.com/ The site above is the site for 4front technologies Mervin McDougall __________________________________________ Yahoo! The only problem until now is the poor volume of the sound. The KDE uses the sound system but the volume is very low. It mus have something todo with the sound.ko or snd_ich.ko because before loading the drivers the volume of the normal keyboard bell is very high. And then, after loading the drivers, is very poor too.
