Synopsis: when compiled with WITHOUT_JAVA, OpenOffice 2.*will not save in "native" formats e.g. .sxw and .odt for Writer. It will save in "compatibility" (terminology mine) formats like .doc. I believe Java is only necessary for the compile phase; once installed you may delete the Java port.
