I can see that I have X11 available with my ports. Make install clean runs successfully but XFree86 -configure does not. Also, my motherboard has PCI-X. Would this keep me from running the X config? On Feb 19, according to the CVS history, the libXft port started using libXft-2.1.6.tar.bz2 (not .gz). So a newer ports tree than the one with 5.3 will look for the .bz2 file, and most distribution sites won't have the .gz now. In fact, many won't have the 2.1.6 .bz2 file either since the port was updated to 2.1.7 on July 14. I just happen to have an old 2.1.6 .gz lying around. FYI, the MD5's for both .bz2 & .gz are: MD5 (libXft-2.1.6.tar.bz2) = ba10c9c3f4758f304f04f8d48e2f81a4 MD5 (libXft-2.1.6.tar.gz) = 1ba6d9b1aec9a237b508663c46d8a979 That said, you probably want to grab the latest ports tree. When using the windows ftp, make sure to change to binary mode ('bin'). Otherwise (in 'ascii' mode), you will see it convert newlines (0x0a) to carriage return + newlines (0x0d, 0x0a). I have tried to > download it to the distfiles directory from various FTP site the when > I run make I get checksum errors. Either update your ports tree (see Handbook http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/ports-using.html ports chapter), or replace MASTER_SITES line in x11-fonts/libXft/Makefile with MASTER_SITES= http://xlibs.freedesktop.org/release/ or fetch the file from above URL. I believe it usually happens when not entire file is downloaded in first try and when fetch tries the second time (perhaps from another mirror) this difference confuses it. What usually helps is doing 'make distclean' which removes partially downloaded file and then trying again. Running 'make distclean' and then manually fetching my needed tar balls worked for me :-) >Dejan Bryan -- Open Source: by the people, for the people. Can you tell a bit more specific at what point things fail. Does 'startx' work? You can find documentation about installing and configuring X in Hanbook - The X Window System chapter: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/x11.html Both GNOME and KDE also have some documentation specific to them: http://www.freebsd.org/gnome/ http://freebsd.kde.org/ Perhaps those would be of help. I'm looking for the documentation of Xorg modules such as "glx", "dri", "dbe"... I checked the content of xorg-documents and xorg-manpages, but I found nothing really relevant, except the DBE(3) manpage. Thanks. One thing you might try is specifying HorizSync an VertRefresh rates in Section "Monitor" of xorg.conf. There seems to be an example configuration for HP XE2 here: http://www.linuxia.de/omnibook-xe2.en.html Does the log file by any chance point to reason why higher modes are not chosen with default configuration obtained from 'X -configure'? You might also have some luck by asking on questions@FreeBSD.org or freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org in case somebody has similar laptop and has it already configured. Also the Xorg developers might advise - you can contact them by xorg@lists.freedesktop.org mailing list or file a bug report at https://bugs.freedesktop.org/ If it is found that a patch is needed, we can of course add it to ports. I did not really look through the log files. I recently upgraded to the Aug 1 version of xorg-server and the problem (occuring for over 4 months) suddenly disappeared.
