I personally do not install the Linux Compat, and don't really plan on ever doing so. If an application does not provide a FreeBSD port I just don't use it. So I too requested that they consider creating a FreeBSD port. We now have documentation which allows us to put the Flash plugin back in ports. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Service Date: Apr 24, 2006 5:55 PM Subject: Macromedia Customer Service Request [8542731] To: Chad Gross Hi Chad, Thank you for contacting Customer Service at Macromedia, now part of Adobe Systems. I understand your feedback on the compatibility of Flash Player on BSD. Please note that Flash Player is not supported in FreeBSD, thus it not mentioned on the End User License Agreement that Flash Player can be downloaded and installed on the operating system. It is not that the web player is prohibited in FreeBSD, but the operating system itself is not compatible with Player. Please note that it is your option whether to install Flash Player on your FreeBSD; however, please note that we cannot provide you with any technical support, warranties or remedies for the software, although it is clearly stated on the End User License Agreement, the only authorized operating systems where you may download and install Flash Player. To view the System Requirements of Flash Player, you may go to: http://www.macromedia.com/software/flashplayer/productinfo/systemreqs/ In connection with this, if you would like to make suggestions or comments on how we can improve future versions of our software, or to report possible "bugs" in our current versions, please visit: http://www.macromedia.com/support/email/wishform/ Your comments, suggestions, and ideas for improvements are very important to us. We appreciate you taking the time to send us this information. I hope this helps. Should you have further concerns, feel free to write us back. Regards, Astrid C. I love how they actually claim that "the operating system itself is not compatible with Player" instead of the other way around. They are trying to direct your question into a compatibiliy concern rather than a legal issue. In order to download and install flash player, you have to accept their EULA, which explicitly prohibits the installation on unauthorized OS's. As long as they don't change their EULA, we cannot legally install flash player on FreeBSD. Their response is actually equivalent to telling you to just dig into the CVS repository, fetch the old port for linux-flashplugin, and install the plugin on your own risk (of being involved in any possible legal issues). - -- Li-Lun Wang -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.3 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQFETnPqCQM7t5B2mhARAncXAJ9obNSu4Dg8o1smpMf+2jWb+GkOlQCeJHgm tr/78/V3vttl58wJJCNyKzA= =SF0x -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- From owner-freebsd-advocacy@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Apr 26 00:38:41 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-advocacy@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-advocacy@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 01C4E16A404 for ; Wed, 26 Apr 2006 00:38:41 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from root@jgl.inksterstattoo.net) Received: from jgl.inksterstattoo.net (jgl.inksterstattoo.net [64.105.196.234]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 87F7543D53 for ; Wed, 26 Apr 2006 00:38:40 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from root@jgl.inksterstattoo.net) Received: by jgl.inksterstattoo.net (Postfix, from userid 0) id 147F424840B; Tue, 25 Apr 2006 20:38:19 -0400 (EDT) To: freebsd-advocacy@freebsd.org From: "Customer Support" <"support@paypal.com"@jgl.inksterstattoo.net> Errors-To: support@paypal.com Message-Id: <20060426003819.147F424840B@jgl.inksterstattoo.net> Date: Tue, 25 Apr 2006 20:38:19 -0400 (EDT) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain X-Content-Filtered-By: Mailman/MimeDel 2.1.5 Subject: account maintenance and verification ( Your account is suspended ) X-BeenThere: freebsd-advocacy@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: support@paypal.com List-Id: FreeBSD Evangelism List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 26 Apr 2006 00:38:41 -0000 [1][paypal_logo.gif] [pixel.gif] PayPal Security Measures! I mean does it matter what level you are at? The Linux emulation are a rather complete linux binary install simply because the host operating system is different shouldn't make it illegal. If I run flash player from inside Windows XP from FreeBSD as host via a emulator such as Bochs or VMware does this mean I am still breaking the law? I don't see any difference its the exact same thing, although its a slightly different emulation method its still not being used via the master host OS that they allow. So technically if follow their rules if you run FreeBSD inside windows XP via VMware you should be allowed to run the flash player. Our schedule has been announced and we're putting the finishing touches on the social calendar. We have a great line up of talks and bofs ready for you. Be sure to get in on the biggest BSD event of the year! As is tradition, you can pick up your registration pack at the Royal Oak pub. Stay for a pint or two and have dinner with us. FYI: The FreeBSD Developer summit will ensure that many of the FreeBSD committers will be at BSDCan. They wind up their session on Thursday and most of them will be with us at the pub. If you have any questions, please ask. -- Dan Langille : Software Developer looking for work my resume: http://www.freebsddiary.org/dan_langille.php From owner-freebsd-advocacy@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Apr 28 14:48:02 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-advocacy@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-advocacy@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E662B16A400 for ; Fri, 28 Apr 2006 14:48:02 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from freebsd-advocacy@m.gmane.org) Received: from ciao.gmane.org (main.gmane.org [80.91.229.2]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7A4B543D48 for ; Fri, 28 Apr 2006 14:48:01 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from freebsd-advocacy@m.gmane.org) Received: from list by ciao.gmane.org with local (Exim 4.43) id 1FZUGE-0004Wq-HB for freebsd-advocacy@freebsd.org; Fri, 28 Apr 2006 16:47:58 +0200 Received: from 65.213.7.6 ([65.213.7.6]) by main.gmane.org with esmtp (Gmexim 0.1 (Debian)) id 1AlnuQ-0007hv-00 for ; Fri, 28 Apr 2006 16:47:58 +0200 Received: from scott by 65.213.7.6 with local (Gmexim 0.1 (Debian)) id 1AlnuQ-0007hv-00 for ; Fri, 28 Apr 2006 16:47:58 +0200 X-Injected-Via-Gmane: http://gmane.org/ To: freebsd-advocacy@freebsd.org From: "Scott I. There's a misunderstanding on that page. It's Not a FreeBSD logo, it's the generic BSD graphic that Free,Net,Open,Dragon etc systems & users use courtesy of Kirk McKusik's consent, if & where given. So it appears Kirk's (cc'd) right to sue/ pursue or whatever, not ours. I see it's got what (I suppose an American) described as "Billy Ray Cyrus-style mullet". Maybe that translates from American to English as "extra hair at the back" So the graphic appears a derived work, a modification of copyright material. -- Julian Stacey. Consultant Unix Net & Sys.
