This machine has a beautiful 17" screen, comfortable keyboard, dual-core AMD64 CPU, keypad, four USB ports, two firewire ports, dual-layer DVD burner, dual-head video (there's an external port for you add-on monitor), four slots for external flash/SD/etc cards, built-in 802.11G wireless and Realtek gigE, and a subwoofer. In car terms, it's pretty much a Hummer; you almost expect it to be delivered upon the backs of a team of slaves specially chosen by dint of their success in lugging rocks for the Pyramids. Definitely not a road warrior machine. Fortunately, I wanted a DTR. The important thing is, how does it run FreeBSD? I installed the December 7.0 i386 snapshot, and got: http://www.blackhelicopters.org/~mwlucas/sagernp9750dmesg.txt Overall, not bad at all. Some points: * x.org 6.8 did not recognize the video card, and I had to download the patch to update the ports tree to x.org 7.0. Once I did that, X came right up. * The touchpad gets some getting used to. The touchpad has a built-in scroll pad on the right side, which worked right out of the box. What's more, if you hit the corners of the scroll bar just right, X picks that up and (depending on where my focus is in Windowmaker) either knocks me forward or back a virtual screen or acts as a back/forward button in Firefox. Not sure if this is FreeBSD's moused or x.org, but still nice that it Just Works. * Lots of stuff hooked up via USB, and lots of connections that just aren't hooked up to anything. The dmesg shows four USB "devices" that just aren't there, and fill up the dmesg with gripes. I suspect that these are the four-in-one card reader. * an unrecognized USB device that I suspect is the integrated USB webcam: ugen0: vendor 0xeb1a product 0x2750, rev 2.00/1.00, addr 2 Will have to investigate that in my copious free time. * linuxpluginwrapper-20051113 doesn't work. It seems that I'm not the only one that has broken for, so I'm not too worried. * Fans. Lots of fans. ACPI seems to work well enough to turn them on and off as needed, though. So, if you're in the market for a luggable DTR, I"d recommend it. Got mine through powernotebooks.com, delivered quickly, good price. ==ml -- Michael W. It could be that you as a non-root user is not being able to write to /dev/ucom0. /dev/ucom0 is created when you press the HotSync button (on 5.x and above). I've had to add the following lines to /etc/devd.conf to get the permissions right. attach 100 { device-name "ucom0"; action "chmod 666 /dev/ucom0"; }; Alternatively, you can "chmod 0666 /dev/ucom0" after you press the HotSync button before running pilot-xfer or, you can run pilot-xfer as root. regards, joseph From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jan 10 14:37:19 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6FB1616A41F for ; Tue, 10 Jan 2006 14:37:19 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from anderson@centtech.com) Received: from mh2.centtech.com (moat3.centtech.com [207.200.51.50]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E2A0143D46 for ; Tue, 10 Jan 2006 14:37:11 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from anderson@centtech.com) Received: from [10.177.171.220] (neutrino.centtech.com [10.177.171.220]) by mh2.centtech.com (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id k0AEb3we054744; Tue, 10 Jan 2006 08:37:03 -0600 (CST) (envelope-from anderson@centtech.com) Message-ID: <43C3C67B.5060401@centtech.com> Date: Tue, 10 Jan 2006 08:36:43 -0600 From: Eric Anderson User-Agent: Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0.7 (X11/20060104) X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Joseph Olatt References: <20060105155118.GH743@115-2.trifle.net> <20060105162656.GA750@115-2.trifle.net> <20060106082156.A14689@eskimo.com> <20060109110313.GI841@115-2.trifle.net> <20060110060451.A28614@eskimo.com> In-Reply-To: <20060110060451.A28614@eskimo.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Virus-Scanned: ClamAV 0.87.1/1235/Sun Jan 8 12:13:01 2006 on mh2.centtech.com X-Virus-Status: Clean Cc: Eugeny N Dzhurinsky , freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Palm Tungsten E2 X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 10 Jan 2006 14:37:19 -0000 Joseph Olatt wrote: >On Mon, Jan 09, 2006 at 01:03:13PM +0200, Eugeny N Dzhurinsky wrote: > > >>On Fri, Jan 06, 2006 at 08:21:56AM -0800, Joseph Olatt wrote: >> >> >>>On Thu, Jan 05, 2006 at 06:26:56PM +0200, Eugeny N Dzhurinsky wrote: >>> >>> >>>>okay, after rebuilding kernel i was able to connect with JPilot and see some >>>>data. So I'll try again here in hope for a more thorough answer: With acpi_ibm.ko, I can monitor fan speed, thermal sensors and do many other nice things. However, my Thinkpad (a T43p) has an awfully noisy fan, that, once the notebook reaches its standard working temperature (around 45 deg C), turns on and never stops again. The generally accepted solution his to manually lower the fan speed and live with the higher temperatures, which will still be in an acceptable range even with slow running fans. The discussion and a utility for Windows can be found here [1], and a linux tool is described here [2]. Now my question. Since acpi_ibm.ko can already read temperature sensors and fan speed, would it be feasable to teach it to control fan speed as well? Is anyone working on it already? Or can someone outline the steps that have to be taken so I can take a look and see if I can do it myself? thanks, t. The cbb driver only supports PCI cardbus slots, not the older hardware you have currently. Warner is working on it, but it's not finished yet. You can still use oldcard (with the pcic) driver for now, though you might have to use 5.x as I think oldcard is gone in 6.0. -- John Baldwin <>< http://www.FreeBSD.org/~jhb/ "Power Users Use the Power to Serve" = http://www.FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jan 10 19:33:45 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 176D716A41F for ; Tue, 10 Jan 2006 19:33:45 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from martin.dieringer@gmx.de) Received: from mail.gmx.net (mail.gmx.de [213.165.64.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 13EA043D46 for ; Tue, 10 Jan 2006 19:33:43 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from martin.dieringer@gmx.de) Received: (qmail invoked by alias); 10 Jan 2006 19:33:42 -0000 Received: from p54BE9017.dip0.t-ipconnect.de (EHLO dieringer.dyndns.org) [84.190.144.23] by mail.gmx.net (mp022) with SMTP; 10 Jan 2006 20:33:42 +0100 X-Authenticated: #21464393 Received: (qmail 39555 invoked by uid 1000); 10 Jan 2006 19:33:41 -0000 Received: from localhost (sendmail-bs@127.0.0.1) by localhost with SMTP; 10 Jan 2006 19:33:41 -0000 Date: Tue, 10 Jan 2006 20:33:41 +0100 (CET) From: Martin Dieringer To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org In-Reply-To: <43C3F65C.20906@jazzie.com> Message-ID: <20060110202619.Y952@pc.dieringer.dyndns.org> References: <43C3F65C.20906@jazzie.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed X-Y-GMX-Trusted: 0 Subject: any network? disabling pccard cardbus or cbb? I didn't see any practical value in setting fancontrol and fanspeed last year (that was the time when the T43 wasn't yet around), therefore I didn't implement write support to prevent users from footshooting. Now that there is a real practical use of it, I have implemented the missing bits. >From the new part of the manpage: dev.acpi_ibm.0.fan Indicates whether the fan is in automatic (1) or manual (0) mode. dev.acpi_ibm.0.fan_level Indicates at what speed the fan should run when being in manual mode. Values are ranging from 0 (off) to 7 (max). The resulting speed differs from model to model. On a T41p this is as follows: 0 off 1, 2 ~3000 RPM 3, 4, 5 ~3600 RPM 6, 7 ~4300 RPM Please try the patch at http://people.freebsd.org/~markus/ibm/acpi_ibm.c.diff It should apply cleanly on -CURRENT and 6.0 and works nicely on my T41p. A dmesg would be helpful as would kldstat and kernel config. The obvious question is whether your kernel includes 'device sound' and 'device snd_ich' or kldstat shows them loaded. You might want to do a 'pciconf -lv' and look for what device is in class 'multimedia' and subclass 'audio'. You may also need drivers for the System Management bus: device smbus device iicbus device iicbb device intpm device ichsmb device smb Not really sure of exactly which are needed. -- R. For some reason I enjoy messing around with FreeBSD a lot more than I did Linux. My FreeBSD install is currently on a Gateway 7326GZ (Intel) Laptop. So far, everything is working as it should except I get no volume when playing audio files and I really don't know where to start with my recently acquired Sony Ericsson GC83 cellular wireless card. Because I can do without audio, for now, I would like to see if anyone can assist me in getting my GC83 card working. It seems that the system recognizes the card and sets it up as /dev/pccard0.cis. [** dmesg output **] sio4: at port 0x3e8-0x3ef irq 17 function 0 config 32 on pccard0 sio4: type 16550A sio4: unable to activate interrupt in fast mode - using normal mode I don't know how to get rid of the "using normal mode" above. I have done plenty of browsing and can't seem to find anyone with a similar issue to mine. I have also found a tutorial for using this exact card on Linux located here: http://advantedgecomputing.com/opensource/gc83linux.html I followed the tutorial, modified the /etc/ppp/peers/cingular file to use the device /dev/pccard0.cis and had to comment out the user, password, and usepeerdns lines because pppd complained that those were not valid options. I also corrected the path to the chat program (/usr/bin/chat instead of /usr/sbin/chat). The program fires off and immediately returns the following errors in /var/log/messages: [** /var/log/messages **] Jan 13 16:55:34 xtop pppd[849]: pppd 2.3.5 started by cross, uid 0 Jan 13 16:55:34 xtop pppd[849]: Couldn't reset non-blocking mode on device: Inappropriate ioctl for device Jan 13 16:55:34 xtop pppd[849]: tcgetattr: Inappropriate ioctl for device I know this will be a somewhat difficult issue for someone to troubleshoot since this pccard is not that common. However, if I am messing up somewhere with the ppp peers configuration or chat commands, someone out there may be able to assist me. I do not know if this is a hardware, software, or configuration issue. Any assistance is greatly appreciated. I am attaching my dmesg output since that seems to be a pretty common request to trouble shoot any issue. If any other information is necessary to assist you in assisting me, please let me know and I will get it to you as soon as possible. Thanks in advance. One question though: Why is the default set to manual/fullspeed instead of automatically? Provided that without the patch, the behaviour would be equal to automatic mode, this breaks POLA and people might complain, or worse, send their thinkpads to Lenovo for repair, since they don't know why the fan is now constantly on full speed. And of course, my next step will now be coming up with a reasonable way of making sure that I don't fry my notebook. Some integration into powerd comes to mind. Of course this would not be necessary if Lenovo had used a reasonable default stepping in the automatic mode in the first place. I had the same problem and it drove me nuts for several days. I have a gateway 7325GZ and had to change ac97.c and ac97.h. I don't have my fbsd drive in now (in debian right now) but I googled and belive it was http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-bugs/2004-May/006684.html that got it working for me. In linux (debian atleast) I have a script on starting X that mutes the external amp to get sound working (amixer -c 0 sset 'External Amplifier',0 mute) maybe one of those will help get you pointed in the right direction. Just remember if you diff the ac97.h and ac97.c, when you cvsup it will replace those files (which I leave alone so I can test newer versions before rediffing) -mark From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Jan 14 20:26:44 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5F88316A431 for ; Sat, 14 Jan 2006 20:26:44 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from jeff.cross@averageadmins.com) Received: from svr85.edns1.com (svr85.edns1.com [67.15.56.3]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D20B043D45 for ; Sat, 14 Jan 2006 20:26:43 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from jeff.cross@averageadmins.com) Received: from ip-66-55-255-50.valornet.com ([66.55.255.50] helo=[192.168.30.100]) by svr85.edns1.com with esmtpa (Exim 4.52) id 1Exryv-00059Z-3k; Sat, 14 Jan 2006 12:26:37 -0800 Message-ID: <43C95E7E.5070807@averageadmins.com> Date: Sat, 14 Jan 2006 14:26:38 -0600 From: Jeff Cross Organization: Average Admins User-Agent: Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0.6 (X11/20051013) X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: "Mark A-J. I have read the post on the link you provided and see the "patched code" at the bottom of it. However, I am a bit of a novice when it comes to patching and recompiling drivers. Can you lend me any assistance on how I can retrieve the patch (download?, copy & paste to new file?, etc.), apply the patch and recompile the driver to create a kernel module? Mind that you're using 6.0-RELEASE, not 6.0-STABLE. http://people.freebsd.org/~ariff/ . Have your kernel sources extracted. Patch it. Now, replace your /usr/src/sys/dev/sound/pci/ich.c with http://people.freebsd.org/~ariff/test/ich.c . You don't have to recompile everything. A simple cd /usr/src/sys/modules/sound/ ; make clean cleandir ; make ; make install should suffice. Either reboot, or manually kldunload / kldload your sound modules. Since I am no FreeBSD guru, I didn't know how to "patch" my kernel sources. I did have them extracted so I backed up all of my sound related kernel objects and the original ich.c file, downloaded and copied the one in the above post to the /usr/src/sys/dev/sound/pci/ directory, and ran the commands you, Ariff, provided and restarted... It worked like a champ!!! So, now my question is this: Since you recommended I patch my kernel to STABLE, is it necessary now since I have audio working? I have been using freebsd-update to get the latest security patches and such. I would like to know how to track the stable branch but I think I'll have to post to the freebsd-stable list for that. I know how off-topic posts are frowned upon on other lists and I am sure the FreeBSD community is no different. Thanks again, Ariff, for your assistance! I truly appreciate it! I truly appreciate it! >=20 As long as it works, I don't recommend to patch anything :) . If you insist, start with Chapter 20: The Cutting Edge - FreeBSD Handbook http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/ .
