This is a old laptop (~ 8 years?) and so I can't use ACPI. From dmesg : ACPI disabled by blacklist. Contact your BIOS vendor. My kernel config only differs from the GENERIC by : ident LAPTOP2 device sound device apm # no longer commented out My /boot/device.hints has : hint.apm.0.disabled="0" # default is 1 and I've tried : hint.apm.0.flags="0x20" both enabled and commented out. In /boot/loader.conf I have : apm_load="YES" I have tried with apmd both running and not running. 'apm -s' gives 1. dmesg tells me : apm0: on motherboard apm0: found APM BIOS v1.2, connected at v1.2 I find that APM sorta works - xbatt works for example. But if I try to suspend (zzz), whether from a xterm under X or not, the display stays the same, keyboard seems unresponsive although I can sometimes switch to a different virtual terminal, but as soon as I attempt to get a response by hitting any keys, I get a constant low beep and I have to kill the power. suspend used to work on this laptop long ago, with a older version of FreeBSD. Probably 4.4 to 4.8 or so. Any hints ? Am I missing something obvious? thanx! -rj From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Dec 10 15:10:06 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1126516A40F for ; Sun, 10 Dec 2006 15:10:06 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gdt@ir.bbn.com) Received: from fnord.ir.bbn.com (fnord.ir.bbn.com [192.1.100.210]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F0F5843C9D for ; Sun, 10 Dec 2006 15:08:54 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gdt@ir.bbn.com) Received: by fnord.ir.bbn.com (Postfix, from userid 10853) id 73E655288; Sun, 10 Dec 2006 10:09:55 -0500 (EST) From: Greg Troxel To: Ian Smith References: X-Hashcash: 1:20:061210:freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org::uGU9WYdStrosBUIf:000000000000000000000000000000000000RCn X-Hashcash: 1:20:061210:smithi@nimnet.asn.au::9ctz/Ng+FSGIQIiw:0000000000000000000000000000000000000000016o+ Date: Sun, 10 Dec 2006 10:09:55 -0500 In-Reply-To: (Ian Smith's message of "Sat\, 4 Nov 2006 00\:47\:40 +1100 \(EST\)") Message-ID: User-Agent: Gnus/5.110006 (No Gnus v0.6) Emacs/21.4 (berkeley-unix) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Cc: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Atheros card with external antenna connector? So far this behaviour sounds pretty much the same as my Compaq Armada 1500c before adding options SC_NO_SUSPEND_VTYSWITCH to the kernel, or test it with hw.syscons.sc_no_suspend_vtswitch=1 in /etc/sysctl.conf > suspend used to work on this laptop long ago, with a older version of > FreeBSD. Probably 4.4 to 4.8 or so. Mine's on 5.5-STABLE, but I don't think the APM stuff has changed on 6. If using USB, you might want to look into kldunload usb in rc.suspend and corresponding kldload usb in rc.resume, as suggested in those files, if you get that far .. During boot, I see : Starting apmd. There are no errors in /var/log/messages, only : Dec 10 16:46:36 laptop2 kernel: apm0: on motherboard Dec 10 16:46:36 laptop2 kernel: apm0: found APM BIOS v1.2, connected at v1.2 Dec 10 16:46:45 laptop2 apmd[471]: start I tried : hw.syscons.sc_no_suspend_vtswitch=1 in /etc/sysctl.conf. It's seen during boot and reports : hw.syscons.sc_no_suspend_vtswitch: 0 -> 1 and trying suspend (zzz) from a normal vty (not in X), caused no response. When I tried to switch vty's, my cursor disappeared. Eventually trying another vty switch caused the constant beep and I had to power-cycle. I then tried it from X, and whether I uncommented the usb entries in /etc/{rc.resume,rc.suspend} or not, as Ian suggested, when I did a zzz, nothing seemed to happen (although 2 out of 3 times, I detected a flicker (1/10 sec) of a 1-pixel horizontal line across my screen), and my mouse went dead. It is a NON-usb mouse. My shell was still ok. ie: a 'echo hi' worked. But as soon as I tried something that required a disk-access, like running my 'fix-moused' script, or 'who', then it hung. Trying to switch to another vty caused the constant beep and then I power-cycle again. Once when my xterm was still active with dead mouse and I was typing, a lower frequency constant beep (I'll call it a boop) happened, until I tried a vty switch, when the constant boop got replaced with a higher frequency constant beep. thanx for any and all help! cheers, -rj From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Dec 11 04:55:51 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AF0A616A403 for ; Mon, 11 Dec 2006 04:55:51 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from smithi@nimnet.asn.au) Received: from gaia.nimnet.asn.au (nimbin.lnk.telstra.net [139.130.45.143]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C613C43CA5 for ; Mon, 11 Dec 2006 04:54:35 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from smithi@nimnet.asn.au) Received: from localhost (smithi@localhost) by gaia.nimnet.asn.au (8.8.8/8.8.8R1.4) with SMTP id PAA11282; Mon, 11 Dec 2006 15:55:40 +1100 (EST) (envelope-from smithi@nimnet.asn.au) Date: Mon, 11 Dec 2006 15:55:40 +1100 (EST) From: Ian Smith To: Greg Troxel In-Reply-To: Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Cc: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Atheros card with external antenna connector? We did a with one antenna. The second connector is for diversity; the card will receive on both and transmit on either. No clues in /var/log/messages like 'suspend failed' ono? Running out of ideas fast here, but it still sounds familiar from when I upgraded from 4.5 to 5.4 a couple of years ago, struggling to remember details .. I run apmd -v here for the extra noise to syslog, and quit using zzz and use the sleep button instead, because with apmd running it runs rc.suspend, which logs suspend (as well as resume) times to syslog, unlike using zzz, plus allowing custom kldunloads etc. Just now: Dec 12 03:35:40 paqi apmd[444]: apmevent 000a index 6 <-- apmd -v Dec 12 03:35:41 paqi apm: suspend at 20061212 03:35:41 <-- rc.suspend Dec 12 03:36:05 paqi kernel: xe0: detached Dec 12 03:36:05 paqi kernel: wakeup from sleeping state (slept 00:00:18) Dec 12 03:36:04 paqi apmd[444]: apmevent 0003 index 7 <-- apmd -v Dec 12 03:36:04 paqi apm: resumed at 20061212 03:36:04 <-- rc.resume Dec 12 03:36:08 paqi kernel: xe0: at port 0x2f8-0x2ff irq 11 function 0 config 2 on pccard0 Dec 12 03:36:08 paqi kernel: xe0: Ethernet address: 00:80:c7:ea:cb:c5 > When I tried to switch vty's, my cursor disappeared. It is a NON-usb mouse. zzz is now an sh script, you can play with delays etc which might help, have it exec rc.suspend instead of running apm -z (both for logging and the chance to disable usb, VESA, etc), or try adding extra logging .. ? See apmd.conf, /usr/sbin/zzz, maybe extend machdep.apm_suspend_delay? In /sys/conf/NOTES there are a couple of mouse items there needed for _some_ laptops (but more for resume, which hardly matters if you can't suspend first, but anyway see PSM_HOOKRESUME and PSM_RESETAFTERSUSPEND) And on reflection and file notes, I'm not entirely certain that setting hw.syscons.sc_no_suspend_vtswitch=1 in syslog.conf worked just as well as compiling it into the kernel .. might be worth a desperate try .. > My shell was still ok. ie: a 'echo hi' worked. > But as soon as I tried something that required a disk-access, like running > my 'fix-moused' script, or 'who', then it hung. Mobile portable devices have outnumbered already traditional desktop computers and will mould the view of computers future generations will have. * service-oriented computing is viewed by many analysts as the computing paradigm of the near future. It allows for the dynamic integration of functionality provided by different parties. * research on ontologies, in particular in connection with work on the semantic web and semantic web services allows for machine understandable description of functionality and for automatic interaction of devices without the need for human involvement. The proposed workshop investigates how mobile computing can benefit from service-orientation and ontologies and vice versa. The vision is to extend the typically rather limited capabilities of mobile devices by using services offered by other devices, network providers or third parties. Adding ontologies to this scenario allows this extension to be transparent to the human user. Further, some high-end mobile telecom terminals can be called already multimedia computers due their programmability, processor speed, and gigabytes of memory. Already in the near future these devices could also utilize ontologies locally during service provisioning. GENERAL OVERVIEW Today, computers are changing from big, grey, and noisy things on our desks to small, portable, and evernetworked devices most of us are carrying around. This new form of mobility imposes a shift in how we view computers and the way we work with them. In developing countries like India and China ‘Mobile Internet’ can become the only Internet a large portion of population will get access to. Services offer the possibility to overcome the limitations of individual mobile devices by making functionality offered by others available to them on an “as-needed” basis. Thus, using the service-oriented computing paradigm in mobile environments will considerably enlarge the variety of accessible applications and will enable new business opportunities in the mobile space by delivering integrated functionalities across wireless networks. Network hosted mobile services will allow mobile operators and third party mobile services provider to extend their businesses by making their network services available to a broader audience (e.g. developers, service providers, etc.); device hosted service will allow great potential for big innovations for applications and services that can be provided by individual mobile device owners. These mobile services offer functionalities and behaviors that can be described, advertised, discovered, and composed by others. Eventually, they will be able to interoperate even though they have not been designed to work together. This type of interoperability is based on the ability to understand other services and reason about their functionalities and behaviors when necessary. In this respect, mobile services can benefit from marrying the Semantic Web, which provides the infrastructure for the extensive usage of distributed knowledge, to be deployed for modeling services and add meaning, through ontologies, enabling lightweight discovery and composition of mobile services. The ability to appropriately combine mobility and semantic grounded data sharing has generated and is continuously triggering challenging questions in several areas of computer science, engineering and networking. This workshop aims to tackle the research problems around methods, concepts, models, languages and technologies that enable new opportunities in the mobile space through adoption, usage, and integration of mobile services and ontologies. Of particular interest are the methodologies and technologies that would allow automatic tasks to be performed with respect to mobile services and the use of ontologies in this context. This proposed workshop aims to bring together researchers and industry attendees addressing many of these issues, and promote and foster a greater understanding of mobile service and ontologies and their potential in enabling new business opportunities in the mobile space. TOPICS The following indicates the general focus of the workshop. However, related contributions are welcome as well. - Service-oriented architectures for mobile internet services - languages and methodologies for describing mobile Service-oriented systems - discovery and matchmaking of ontology based services in the context of mobile service-oriented architectures - adaptive selection of services in mobile service-oriented architectures - ontology management in mobile environments - contracting and negotiation with ontology-based mobile services (service level agreements) - approaches to composition of ontology based services in the context of mobile service-oriented systems - invocation, adaptive execution, monitoring, and management of mobile services - interaction protocols and conversation models for mobile services-oriented architectures - ontology-based security and privacy issues in mobile service-oriented systems - applications of mobile service-oriented architectures - analysis and design approaches for mobile service-oriented architectures and services - reasoning with mobile services - ontology-based policies for mobile service-oriented architectures - tools for discovery, matchmaking, selection, mediation, composition, management, and monitoring of services in a mobile world - mobile service development - ontologies in dependable service provisioning WORKSHOP FORMAT AND ATTENDANCE The program will occupy a full day, and will include presentations of papers selected from the full papers category (see 'submissions' below). Please note that at least one author of each accepted submission must attend the workshop. The MDM 2007 conference formalities are applied for fees and respective organizational aspects. Submission of a paper is not required for attendance at the workshop. Note the set of four "No match for" messages early in the boot process, right after the keyboard is identified. After those appear, everything looks normal enough until right after the two lines that say, firewire0: 1 nodes, maxhop <= 0, cable IRM = 0 (me) firewire0: bus manager 0 (me) At this point, the wireless card is identified, though not entirely correctly. The card is a 1450, not a 1400. (Windows XP correctly identifies the card.) Then a series of 14 identical lines follows that say, ntoskrnl dummy called... after which the panic messages appear. It's progress of a sort because previously I had never gotten it to do more than notice that an unidentified network device was at pci2, but with no driver attached. But I still do not have working wireless support in FreeBSD. If anyone recognizes any of the weird messages or has any idea where I may have gone wrong or anything else that might provide a clue to getting the damned thing to work, I would appreciate hearing from you about it. AFAIK, some new functions (mentioned in the dmesg as no matches) are added in drivers that ndis wrapper doesn't understand. Linux people solve this by upgrading their ndisulator, I did it fetching older driver - R112196.EXE . Now it works fine and without an issue for two weeks already. You can find it at http://ftp.dell.com/network/R112196.EXE or my copy at ftp://styx.aic.net/pub/FreeBSD/incoming/R112196.EXE . There was also thread in archives about implementing the functions in ndis wrapper, but I found nothing about success.
