I posted a followon email a little while ago that emu10kx works (actually, the February snapshot version). It turns them into individual devices, like: Apr 30 13:13:40 mcr kernel: pcm0: on emu10kx0 Apr 30 13:13:40 mcr kernel: pcm0: Apr 30 13:13:40 mcr kernel: pcm1: on emu10kx0 Apr 30 13:13:40 mcr kernel: pcm2: on emu10kx0 Apr 30 13:13:40 mcr kernel: pcm3: on emu10kx0 but the baudline spectrum analyzer is able to deal with that. Too bad if the driver author stopped working on it, it is pretty neat. I had tried emailing him a few times, but no response. The support has been in ac97.c but disabled for a while. Recently this code was enabled and looks like it should be in the final 6.1 release. The support in 6.1 is much better than my hack which just always enabled the mic gain. I'm not sure if it is documented very well anywhere, nor do I know where I would expect this to be documented since it only applies to ac97 codecs. -- I've never been lost; I was once bewildered for three days, but never lost! -- Daniel Boone From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Mon May 1 18:02:35 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 228D416A42F for ; Mon, 1 May 2006 18:02:35 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from uspoerlein@gmail.com) Received: from nproxy.gmail.com (nproxy.gmail.com [64.233.182.186]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2AE9543D46 for ; Mon, 1 May 2006 18:02:33 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from uspoerlein@gmail.com) Received: by nproxy.gmail.com with SMTP id m18so516718nfc for ; Mon, 01 May 2006 11:02:33 -0700 (PDT) DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; q=dns; c=nofws; s=beta; d=gmail.com; h=received:date:from:to:cc:subject:message-id:mail-followup-to:references:mime-version:content-type:content-disposition:in-reply-to; b=eKoANDougCqc6rtFK6eDRybgzh4A4l7vpheGDmim2QCbHkG73m2v5F5Me9S/IL2vegvk+/q07Unbqnypy75m9C9KkP3upWyZTL61IgiYx50YjRbcG8HEg+yc5X3qdCD1JbKFFyGGdBqFAB78ZOEaTh2JwCZCe0FjRrHEDaUJ03c= Received: by 10.49.29.13 with SMTP id g13mr988737nfj; Mon, 01 May 2006 11:02:32 -0700 (PDT) Received: from roadrunner.q.local ( [217.185.116.43]) by mx.gmail.com with ESMTP id c1sm1422537nfe.2006.05.01.11.02.31; Mon, 01 May 2006 11:02:32 -0700 (PDT) Received: from roadrunner.q.local (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by roadrunner.q.local (8.13.6/8.13.6) with ESMTP id k3UJbiHH099294; Sun, 30 Apr 2006 21:37:44 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from uspoerlein@gmail.com) Received: (from q@localhost) by roadrunner.q.local (8.13.6/8.13.6/Submit) id k3UJbguY099293; Sun, 30 Apr 2006 21:37:42 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from uspoerlein@gmail.com) Date: Sun, 30 Apr 2006 21:37:41 +0200 From: Ulrich Spoerlein To: Ian Smith Message-ID: <20060430193741.GA98897@roadrunner.q.local> Mail-Followup-To: Ian Smith , freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org References: <20060428151331.GA7607@roadrunner.q.local> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="HcAYCG3uE/tztfnV" Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: Cc: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Subject: Re: /dev/speaker broken in 5.x? It turns out that on 6.1 version was fixed so I was waiting with impacience to work well. I was able to make it work skype well on a PC machine but not on my laptop. My laptop is a 5 years old IBM ThinkPad T21 with a Crystal Sound Fusion sound card. It works perfectly on windows (I have a XP partion on it) and it works with any multimedia application on FreeBSD 6.1 RC1 with kde3.5 (xmms, x11amp, kplayer, mplayer...) but NOT on Skype. Actually it seems that the microphone does not work properly : I can hear anybody else (tested with echo123 service) but my sound (using both the built-in mic or another external) produce a terrible sound with distorsions. I am using csa sound driver module (the only one I was able to make it work) at more /dev/sndstat it gives : FreeBSD Audio Driver (newpcm) Installed devices: pcm0: at irq 11 (1p/1r/4v channels duplex default) and the kernel is compiled with "device sound" and "device csa" ! I tryied everything I was able to find on net, including the hint in device.hints : hint.pcm.0.buffersize=65536 .... I am getting crazy about this ! Please can anybody help me ? maybe another ThinkPad user ? Thanks in advance ! --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dumitru N. If you use 6.0-release, you could have a look at http://people.freebsd.org/~ariff/ and read the text at the bottom to choose the right patch. This will put the sound system from 6.1 into 6.0. Dear All, My apologies for the noise! The sound has finally somehow arousen. I don't know what I did. It was certainly neither wrongly connected nor mixer missetup (double checked). There might be something with the speaker's cabeling as bending it a little gives noise, nevertheless I could'nt make it completely fail. I am really sorry! Thanks for your help and patience! Nothing changed ! And to continue, this is ONLY with Skype !!!! Any other multimedia application works perfect (xmms, x11amp, mplayer....) I tryied both skype's, namely that one from ports (/usr/ports/net/skype ) or the version for linux downloaded from www.skype.com. The troubles are with Skype and sound on FreeBSD! Now I have on my PC (an Intel Pentium4 3.2 GHz precessor with FreeBSD 6.1 RC and snd_via8233 module) skype working well (as never before) but NOT on my laptop (a ThinkPad T21 machine, with Crystal Sound Fusion sound device and Cirrus Logic CS4297A AC97 Codec and again FreeBSD 6.1 RC system). So to conclude, the problem is with Skype on FreeBSD !!!! And I am crazy about this, it's really a challange for me, not mentioning the fact that on my XP Windows partition on the same ThinkPad laptop works wonderfull !!! Let's do something with this, I am sick of turning off my Unix box every time when I want to use Skype !!! It's boring !!! Thanks a and Long live FreeBSD !!! I guess that the outlets on the front cover of your computer case are incorrectly connected with your motherboard, which maybe affects the outlets on the back cover at the same time. You may try disconnecting front panel outlets from your motherboard and restoring jumper switches of the front panel audio connector on your motherboard. Then, try back panel outlets. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ From Beijing, China Zsolt [ISO-8859-2] Ki wrote: > A last word, just for the record. > > Cabeling certainly can not be blamed, as I remeber I tried headphone on > the front jack (inlet?) and there was no sound for sure. > > Perhaps the lastly tried params in sysctl.conf did the job? > > hw.snd.maxautovchans=8 > hw.snd.pcm0.vchans=4 > > Zsolt > > > On Wed, 3 May 2006 20:02:33 +0000 > Zsolt Ki wrote: > >> Dear All, > > [...] >> My apologies for the noise!
