I KNOW those packages are good. In these types of situations, I usually look at environmental things. What env vars are shared between your usual chuck account and your test chuck account that are not found on the working test server? What sysctl, boot.conf, kernel, or rc.conf settings differ between the two machines? What libraries differ with regard to checksums from the following list: /lib/libthr.so.3 /lib/libc.so.7 /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6 /lib/libz.so.4 /lib/libgcc_s.so.1 /lib/libm.so.5 /usr/lib/librpcsvc.so.4 What about the output of "ldd /usr/local/lib/firefox/components/libpipnss.so" from both machines? I figure the answer has to exist in one of those things. Sorry, I'm not really sure how to explain this better. Here is a screenshot of gkrellm: http://jrm.ath.cx/misc/messed_up_fonts.png As you can see, the fonts are so large they overlap. I didn't change any of my configuration files (xorg.conf, ~/fonts.conf, ~/.gtkrc-2.0, etc). Here is the output from /var/log/xorg.log: http://jrm.ath.cx/misc/Xorg.0.log It seems as though the usual fonts cannot be rendered so some sort of defaults are being used. Are there any logs I should be checking, looking for a message like "such and such fonts could not be found"? Thanks for any help you can provide. What configuration file actually gets changed when a gnome user changes a DPI setting via Preferences->Appearance->Fonts->Details? >>I also tried setting FC_DEBUG to > > various values and started some gtk-2 apps. You could also try rebuilding > fontconfig, freetype2, and libXft. > I tried the fc-cache -f -v as root and ran X as root, but not luck. I guess this suggests it's not the user configuration files. I've tried reinstalling all xorg dependencies, the above ports and gtk-2 and its dependencies, but still the extra large fonts. Adding something like gtk-font-name = "helvetica 11" to ~/gtkrc-2.0 does change some fonts (for example the menu items in firefox and the dialog box fonts in gkrellm2), but it has no effect on the problem fonts. So maybe something in /usr/local/etc/fonts/fonts.conf? If I create an iso image with mkisofs and I burn it to a cd/dvd with cdre= cord/growisofs, hal mounts it with the label padded to 16 characters. This is evident when the icon appears on the desktop with the label not c= entered but apparently shifted to left. For example, if the volume label is TEST, with lshal I see $ lshal | grep TEST udi =3D '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/volume_label_TEST____________' info.hal_mount.created_mount_point =3D '/media/TEST ' (= string) info.product =3D 'TEST ' (string) info.udi =3D '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/volume_label_TEST_______= _____' (string) volume.mount_point =3D '/media/TEST ' (string) volume.label =3D 'TEST ' (string) and hal mounts the image under /media/TEST\ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ / This happens with images created and burned on FreeBSD and Linux, however= on linux (hal-0.5.10) the label isn't padded. This behavior lead me to think that the problem is with hal on FreeBSD. Anyway labels are not padded on media burned with a common commercial app= lication for Windows. So I can't understand if the problem is with hal on FreeBSD and/or mkisof= s or in the way I'm using them. For reference, the mkisofs command used is $ mkisofs -o TEST.iso -V "TEST" -iso-level 3 -l -r -hide-rr-moved -J = -joliet-long -graft-points "/=3D./test" From owner-freebsd-gnome@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Dec 31 17:55:13 2007 Return-Path: Delivered-To: gnome@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D87E916A418 for ; Mon, 31 Dec 2007 17:55:13 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from xliu99@yahoo.com) Received: from web54106.mail.re2.yahoo.com (web54106.mail.re2.yahoo.com [206.190.37.241]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 672CB13C4DB for ; Mon, 31 Dec 2007 17:55:13 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from xliu99@yahoo.com) Received: (qmail 97872 invoked by uid 60001); 31 Dec 2007 17:28:31 -0000 DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; q=dns; c=nofws; s=s1024; d=yahoo.com; h=X-YMail-OSG:Received:Date:From:Subject:To:MIME-Version:Content-Type:Content-Transfer-Encoding:Message-ID; b=1T5J3WXRZwrz+JkWAV7xeRLfJarjvD+7mxrF8SytqJnhWsBO0rO4hFR0t+/0tfehJYvc5A1W/A9R7ejEK1tZo3Uhj1WS/rKewB6pkNXlFAec6lI+TbvepHrKjKuq8jau2L6Da8cBEFSPo2nRKkpMZTGEG/MVQgYxLAKHnjX5tPI=; X-YMail-OSG: MiBuZ_0VM1mVuh28Mf5d0Aokf4f9duwkvv4jxwf_mkifre_NRuDGIptUccsg77S9Hi4a2b9W2mDb72xNRUyYFTpOPa.s6btQ5OqB9aHqyZr8M.vOtmjlsd58a5y0v7RpFEnR50sgjLAyt2GS_..o9NR2.w-- Received: from [205.210.38.170] by web54106.mail.re2.yahoo.com via HTTP; Mon, 31 Dec 2007 09:28:31 PST Date: Mon, 31 Dec 2007 09:28:31 -0800 (PST) From: Xi Liu To: gnome@FreeBSD.org MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Message-ID: <872848.96938.qm@web54106.mail.re2.yahoo.com> Cc: Subject: Quick question on recompiling freebsd 6.2 port of firefox-2.0.0.11, 1 X-BeenThere: freebsd-gnome@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: GNOME for FreeBSD -- porting and maintaining List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 31 Dec 2007 17:55:14 -0000 Hi there, I am trying to hack the firefox code a bit to be able to print to a file without a dialog/prompt for file name(path) on freebsd 6.2. The port compiles fine from the root dir (/usr/ports/www/firefox-devel) of the port. Then I made some simple changes to a file "nsPrintSettingsImpl.cpp" in "/usr/ports/www/firefox-devel/work/mozilla/gfx/src". Then I type "make" or "make build" in the root dir of the port. It does not recompile to pickup my changes(see below) pe2900# pwd /usr/ports/www/firefox-devel pe2900# make pe2900# pe2900# make build pe2900# I read the man page on "ports" and can not find any build targets I can force recompiling. My question is how can I recompile the extracted port to pickup my changes? It is what it is. We use the same library calls as Linux does. We expect the results to be the same. >=20 > > The code FreeBSD and Linux are using looks quite > > similar. What version of libvolume_id is the Linux machine using? >=20 > libvolume_id-116 We are currently using version 108 (or there abouts). I am working on updating to hal-0.5.10, and have a port of libvolume_id-0.81.0 (udev-117). You can download the diff from http://www.marcuscom.com/downloads/libvolume_id.diff . It may fix this problem.
