I followed the steps in /usr/ports/UPDATING, section 20070519 but cannot seem to get past the dri build. There were also some errors reported when I ran the portupgrade program. You can see the output of this as I used script to capture all the output. Is there any advice you can offer here. I went back to the /usr/ports/x11/xorg directory and did a make install clean but it crashed immediately with only a few error lines regarding dri again. So I then did a rm -rf /usr/ports/*/*/work and then did another make install clean. It ran for several minutes and then crashed at the dri build again. Another member in the #freebsd chatroom gave me the directions to remove all the work directories. He said his attempts to upgrade xorg all crashed on dri too. Anyway, thanks again for your valuable advise. I really would like to get 7.2 running because mplayer and several other ports I've tried to install seem to need the later version of xorg before they will install. I got the libdrm updated and then tried to build xorg again. It crashed again on dri, so I did a rm -rf /usr/ports/*/*/work/ and then tried it again. The build of xorg then comleted after about 30 minutes. But when I tried to startx it crashed. There was something in the error messages about my /etc/X11/xorg.conf so I erased it as well as my /root/xorg.conf.new and then did Xorg -configure I was then able to startx but there is no window manger running. I was running the old xterm with the little green and white windows....I know I'm a real simpleton but I kind of like that simple little interface and was going to wait until I got some other things up and running before moving to Gnome or KDE or another window manager. So can you please help me with what I need to do to assign a window manager to run when startx is run? Thanks again. Your assistance is appreciated. But may I ask how I can get the default window manager back. I think it's called xterm or xdm, I'm not sure. The link you referenced is for loading Gnome or KDE. The last time I followed the instructions for loading KDE like this it ran for almost 72 hours. And that was on a P4 1.9 Ghz with a blazing fast high speed connection I was using in NYC. It would download 640 MB in only 3 minutes, but the KDE pkg_add was still running after 2 days of non-stop compiling and I eventually had to give it up. I just want to get my little xterm windows back like I had before the Xorg upgrade. Again, thanks for your replies. When I build a new server and run Xorg -configure and then run startx, I get three white windows with green frames. I'm not sure if this is what you're calling xterm but that is the file I run when I want to create a new window. When this is running there is no /$HOME/.xinitrc file present...which would load KDE like an older system I used to run. After I upgraded xorg, it crashed and went back to a text console. So I erased /etc/x11/xorg.conf and /root/xorg.conf.new. I then ran Xorg -configure and then ran startx. I then got a complete white screenon the monitor and could see the mouse moving around but no little white/green windows and I couldn't type anything to launch an application. I have received a reply linking me to the handbook which shows how to load KDE or Gnome. What I really want is to get back to those little white/green windows back so I can start from the basics. After I grasp what I'm really doing I want to load KDE and work with it. But I must admit that once upon a time about 2 years ago, I did a pkg_add -r kde and the damn thing ran for almost 72 hours compiling stuff before I gave up on it and reinstalled to get back to those little white/green windows that just work right off a new install. Again, sorry to be such a bother but I could really use some solid advice on how to get everything back to the default window manager before exploring more complex designs in Xorg. And thanks again for your patience and advice. Peter Jeremy wrote: Please wrap lines at 80 characters and don't top-post. Unless you have local customisations, deleting it and re-running '-configure' is the easiest solution. > I was then able to startx but there is no window manger running. By default, startx will not start a window manager - it just starts an xterm. You will need to create $HOME/.xinitrc to make it do more. Maybe he's talking about "twm"? (From twm(1) ) This program is usually started by the user's session manager or startup script. When used from xdm(1) or xinit(1) without a session manager, twm is frequently executed in the foreground as the last client. When run this way, exiting twm causes the session to be termi- nated (i.e., logged out). Try creating a ".xinitrc" in your directory with the line "exec twm" and see if it results in what you want. (reduced X= =20 >to less than 15 ports!) The existing xorg meta-port is (virtually by definition) overkill since a significant part of what it installs is unnecessary for any installation. What is missing is documentation and tools to help someone work out exactly what they need without having to install the xorg meta-port. I believe that your xorg-base port is a worthwhile step along the road but I'm not sure it's a complete solution. >The video and input drivers allow the user to choose exactly which drivers= =20 >to install. The problem I see is that there's no guidance available to help someone work out what options to choose. Unfortunately, X.org documentation remains its weakest point and neither the X.org website nor the FreeBSD pkg-descr files provide any assistance in this area. Some of the drivers don't even have documentation explaining what they support, what functionality they provide or how to configure them. For probably 99% of users, keyboard and mouse are adequate on the input side. Working out which video driver suits your chipset is more problematic. Not all VIA chipsets are supported by the VIA driver - some need the SAVAGE driver. How does J. Random User find out that he needs the "i810" to support his 945GM chipset (and how does he work out that he has a 945GM in the first place)? It would be nice if the X.org project provided a tool that could probe your system and tell you what driver was applicable. "X -configure" will do this but only if you've installed all the drivers to start with. >The stuff installed by xorg-base is enough to get an X screen up and=20 >running. There doesn't appear to be either a display manager or startx included. How do you start the X server? And whilst there may be an X screen running, it's not really usable without any X clients or window managers. I'm not sure if the apropriate solution is: 1) OPTIONS entries to select a way to start X, a few common X clients and some simple window managers (eg xinit, xdm, xterm, twm, fvwm) 2) A pkg-message reminding the user that they need to select X clients and a window manager and some way to start X. 3) An updated X11 chapter in the Handbook. > I tested this further by installing kde-base port(which installed=20 >some more xorg ports but not so many) At least some of those additional xorg ports may belong in your xorg-base port. Did you make a note of which ones it installed? >now. setxkbmap and xauth is required for setting keyboard mapping and=20 >changing identity, for example becoming root to make changes on kdm from= =20 >control center. Perhaps those could be installed by default by the kde-bas= e=20 >port? because kde uses them? I don't think I've needed setxkbmap for more than a decade, though I do need xmodmap. Either xhost or xauth are necessary if you are going to have X clients running on a different system to your X server, or if you want to use X when you've su(1)d after logging into X. xhost is probably pretty much deprecated but I'd say xauth is pretty much essential for most configurations. BTW, there is a copy-and-paste error in xorg-video-drivers/Makefile - "i128 driver" is repeated three times in OPTIONS. --=20 Peter Jeremy --K8nIJk4ghYZn606h Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Disposition: inline -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.7 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQFGvkcd/opHv/APuIcRAqORAJ9OO7xeLaYtwMX1fqH4N0vbW2UGDgCglSTc jtSLMpCAbQiexXz4QSUbWfI= =C84B -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --K8nIJk4ghYZn606h--
