I need to do division and multiplication with float into a kernel module. This module compile, load and run without problem on i386 platform. I can compile it on amd64 but when I try to load it I have: link_elf_obj: symbol __mulsf3 undefined After some search, I found that __mulsf3 (and __divsf3...etc) are builtin function of gcc. In my assembly source result, I have a "call __mulsf3" but the function is defined nowhere. I'm working on amd64 6.3-RELEASE binaries and source tree. Is that normal ? Do I need to use something special in order to use float into kernel ? How can I solve this ? Floating point arithmetic isn't used in the kernel for performance reasons.[1] The kernel is compiled with -msoft-float which prevents gcc =66rom generating floating point instructions. In this case it uses routines that are part of libgcc. As far as I can tell, the kernel isn't linked with libgcc.=20 Roland [1] http://www.onlamp.com/pub/a/bsd/2008/02/26/whats-new-in-freebsd-70.html= ?page=3D3=20 --=20 R.F.Smith http://www.xs4all.nl/~rsmith/ [plain text _non-HTML_ PGP/GnuPG encrypted/signed email much appreciated] pgp: 1A2B 477F 9970 BA3C 2914 B7CE 1277 EFB0 C321 A725 (KeyID: C321A725) --XsQoSWH+UP9D9v3l Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Disposition: inline -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.4 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQFHzEFNEnfvsMMhpyURAqj0AJ9VWDj8Aw9874SZfm/d4LvYICz7EQCfanEJ 2pCijQZsIB4DQJjEjL9qJ6o= =Bco1 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --XsQoSWH+UP9D9v3l-- From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Mar 3 18:33:24 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0DD4C1065670 for ; Mon, 3 Mar 2008 18:33:24 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from peterjeremy@optushome.com.au) Received: from mail16.syd.optusnet.com.au (mail16.syd.optusnet.com.au [211.29.132.197]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8EB8B8FC13 for ; Mon, 3 Mar 2008 18:33:23 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from peterjeremy@optushome.com.au) Received: from server.vk2pj.dyndns.org (c220-239-20-82.belrs4.nsw.optusnet.com.au [220.239.20.82]) by mail16.syd.optusnet.com.au (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id m23IXKCt019750 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA bits=256 verify=NO); Tue, 4 Mar 2008 05:33:21 +1100 Received: from server.vk2pj.dyndns.org (localhost.vk2pj.dyndns.org [127.0.0.1]) by server.vk2pj.dyndns.org (8.14.2/8.14.1) with ESMTP id m23IXJqJ077342; Tue, 4 Mar 2008 05:33:19 +1100 (EST) (envelope-from peter@server.vk2pj.dyndns.org) Received: (from peter@localhost) by server.vk2pj.dyndns.org (8.14.2/8.14.2/Submit) id m23IXJBu077341; Tue, 4 Mar 2008 05:33:19 +1100 (EST) (envelope-from peter) Date: Tue, 4 Mar 2008 05:33:19 +1100 From: Peter Jeremy To: Jean-Yves Moulin Message-ID: <20080303183319.GG90593@server.vk2pj.dyndns.org> References: <47CBF364.4030905@kewego.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="4ZLFUWh1odzi/v6L" Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <47CBF364.4030905@kewego.com> X-PGP-Key: http://members.optusnet.com.au/peterjeremy/pubkey.asc User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.17 (2007-11-01) Cc: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Subject: Re: kernel module and float X-BeenThere: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the AMD64 platform List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 03 Mar 2008 18:33:24 -0000 --4ZLFUWh1odzi/v6L Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable On Mon, Mar 03, 2008 at 01:47:32PM +0100, Jean-Yves Moulin wrote: >Is that normal ? When I compile on amd64, using , I have -mfpmath=387 and -msoft-float in my gcc flags. So, I was thinking I could use simple floating point operation. This two flags doesn't appear on i386. I would like to run amd64. Since nvidia drivers always worked for me, I ordered one of their later cards (8500GT), only to find out now that nvidia drivers are not there for amd64. So my 2 questions are: 1) does the open nv driver work? I do not play games or really need 3D acceleration, just want basic 2D and things like mplayer to work properly. 2) should I return nvidia card and get something else? Is there a better reasonably working card? Thanks. The machine is by far the most powerful beast I ever had, so I hope it will be able to show basic video without fancy acceleration features. Still, I've used mplayer for years, it would be sad to give it up. So I won't mind getting a 7xxx. There is no difference as far as I am concerned. You seem to be patient indeed, is there any indication that nvidia will ever release an amd64 driver? Google shows years of empty rallying and petitions. Very much like the adobe/flash9 situation. I'm not sure if or when those will be implemented. Maybe ask the hackers@ list. IMHO this is the wrong way to go about things. Binary only drivers can be a PITA. The FreeBSD team cannot debug or support them. Only the vendors can. And for them, FreeBSD-amd64 must be the niche of a niche market. If kernel internal interfaces change, you'll have to wait until a new driver is released by the vendor. I suspect that most binary drivers are recompiled windows drivers with a FreeBSD wrapper. Given the average quality of windows driver, the question is do you want something like that in your kernel? > Google shows years of empty rallying and petitions.=20 > Very much like the adobe/flash9 situation. It seems that ATI cards have= =20 > better support now. Since ATI was acquired by AMD, they seem to have begun releasing more documentation. For more information check the Xorg/freedesktop websites and mailing lists. It seems that ATI and Intel are now the best wrt releasing documentation so that free/open source drivers can be written. The penguins have xv working on ATI up through R500 thanks to the docs that AMD/ATI have been releasing. Video decoding might be problematic on R600 since it is integrated with the DRM crap which they don't want to document. They may or may not find a way to document video decoding on R600. Also: 3D for R300,400,500 (3D for R600 coming soon.) "The 3D programming documentation today is 300 pages and is made up of a programming guide and register specifications. Among the areas covered in this 3D guide are the command processor, vertex shaders, fragment shaders, Hyper-Z, and the various 3D registers." Docs are available here: http://ati.amd.com/developer/open_gpu_documentation.html http://www.x.org/docs/AMD/ http://www.phoronix.com/ is a good place to watch for updates, (aside from their penguin bias). My question is: how much of this is generic X11 and how much is OS specific (BSD vs Linux)? How long until BSD has xv/xvmc/vaapi support with no binary-only blobs? don't support the ether card built into Dell's inexpensive AMD 64 bit T105 servers. This patch makes it work. >How-To-Repeat: Boot, try network, it doesn't. >Fix: This patch works for me. I sent this to freebsd-hardware on Dec 23 2007 and Remko said he'd try and add it in but didn't see it in the csup I did a couple days ago. Well, no obvious ACPI problems - the graphics card is buggy, and its sound system does strange things that I haven't had time to investigate, but other than that... remind me to never have anything to do with an HP computer again. The "no BIOS SMAP" problem is that its BIOS refuses to give memory information to FreeBSD AMD64, so it can't boot. - Bob From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Mar 7 23:40:04 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D51041065763 for ; Fri, 7 Mar 2008 23:40:04 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C3ED18FC28 for ; Fri, 7 Mar 2008 23:40:04 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.2/8.14.2) with ESMTP id m27Ne4vv059879 for ; Fri, 7 Mar 2008 23:40:04 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.2/8.14.1/Submit) id m27Ne4vf059878; Fri, 7 Mar 2008 23:40:04 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Date: Fri, 7 Mar 2008 23:40:04 GMT Message-Id: <200803072340.m27Ne4vf059878@freefall.freebsd.org> To: freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.org From: Bob Johnson X-Mailman-Approved-At: Sat, 08 Mar 2008 00:07:34 +0000 Cc: Subject: Re: amd64/111955: [install] Install CD boot panic due to missing BIOS smap on 5.5 through to 7.0-Current Snapshot 200704 X-BeenThere: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: Bob Johnson List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the AMD64 platform List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 07 Mar 2008 23:40:05 -0000 The following reply was made to PR amd64/111955; it has been noted by GNATS. I'm completely ignorant of the boot process for AMD64, but could code be lifted from i386 and moved to AMD64 to solve this? I know this fixed an issue where the system would panic when the gateway disappeared, but I think it may also have fixed the recursive mutex panic too. Are you still seeing this panic with 6.3? I'm completely ignorant of the boot > process for AMD64, but could code be lifted from i386 and moved to AMD64 to > solve this? Here's what actually happens and explains the differences. On the i386 kernel, we can make bios calls in vm86 mode during startup and have various code to find memory the "old" ways, using increasingly poor alternatives. It can fall back to bios calls and memory locations that have limits of 512MB or 64MB of ram, etc. The amd64 kernel cannot make vm86 mode calls or bios calls. It is the nature of the cpu mode. In theory, the kernel could have a mini-32-bit sub-kernel inside it and switch between 64 bit mode and 32 bit mode on the fly in order to make vm86 calls, but that is a lot of work. The AMD64 certification specs explicitly listed certain minimum bios specs as part of the logo certification requirements. For example, they must be PC2001 at a minimum. This means that it has to have USB, ACPI, etc etc. It has to have the 0xe820 memory map bios function which completely specifies the memory layout in an ACPI-compliant fashion. It lists memory that is reserved for ACPI, etc. Windows logo certifications also require PC2001 or later these days as well. For all intents and purposes, there is never going to be amd64-compatible system that doesn't have at least this level of functionaility. When I was doing the amd64 kernel boot code, I was faced with all the VM86 nastiness in the kernel. I had to do it another way. I realized that since the loader was already getting the memory map itself, and since it was running purely in 32 bit mode, then it made sense to simply pass the bios smap data through to the kernel that the loader already had. But here's where it went horribly wrong. Over recent years, bios makers have put more and more hacks into the bios code. The bioses themselves sometimes switch from 16 bit real mode to 32 bit protected mode and then back again. They do this to emulate things like driver floppies, usb and cdrom boot, etc etc. The frequency of this is increasing rather than decreasing. And here's the rub. If we call a bios function in vm86 mode, the bios code *CANNOT* switch to 32 bit protected mode. Usually what we see is that you get a BTX fault. This is because vm86 trapped an illegal or priviliged instruction, and BTX reports the problem. We've seen bios vendors start to put code that TESTS to see if it is being called in vm86 mode, and either silently fail or return an error, rather than cause btx crashes etc. Here's the rub. Some bios vendors decided that the 0xe820 call needed this treatment. This is the bios SMAP call. When the loader calls the memory map functions via a vm86 bios call, the bios returns an error. The loader then falls back to the ancient bios calls and limps along. Of course, we can't pass the non-existing SMAP code to the kernel, so when the kernel starts, it panics. There is work afoot that solves this. There should also be more seatbelts. First and foremost, John has done a non-vm86 version of btx. This completely and utterly solves the root cause of the problem. int 15 function 0xe820 will get called in real mode, just like windows, linux, grub, netbsd, old freebsd bootblocks etc do. Our boot code will behave just like everybody else's and we won't have these strange freebsd-specific problems anymore. (The downside of this change is that bad bios code won't cause BTX faults anymore. Bios crashes will reset the machine instead of reporting a btx fault that we can debug) Secondly, loader should report the missing SMAP data before starting an amd64 kernel. I've been meaning to do this for a while. if there is no SMAP data, explain the problem right there rather than letting the kernel blow up. Third.. we might be able to generate a fake SMAP table in a sort of limp-along mode. eg: if the bios doens't have it, use the legacy memory sizing code in loader to generate a fake table and pass that through to the kernel. The kernel might be stuck with only 512MB, but it might be better than nothing. It might be possible to use some getenv type calls to override the limited data. I think the work John has done to change the bios call method in BTX is the right solution though. I don't know what the MFC potential is. If it doesn't get backported, then the other hacks / workarounds / seatbelts might be in order for older branches. -- Peter Wemm - peter@wemm.org; peter@FreeBSD.org; peter@yahoo-inc.com "All of this is for nothing if we don't go to the stars" - JMS/B5 "If Java had true garbage collection, most programs would delete themselves upon execution." -- Robert Sewell From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Mar 8 03:32:04 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 79A41106567D; Sat, 8 Mar 2008 03:32:04 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from vwe@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4FDCB8FC12; Sat, 8 Mar 2008 03:32:04 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from vwe@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (vwe@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.2/8.14.2) with ESMTP id m283W4eA078059; Sat, 8 Mar 2008 03:32:04 GMT (envelope-from vwe@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from vwe@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.2/8.14.1/Submit) id m283W3HX078055; Sat, 8 Mar 2008 03:32:03 GMT (envelope-from vwe) Date: Sat, 8 Mar 2008 03:32:03 GMT Message-Id: <200803080332.m283W3HX078055@freefall.freebsd.org> To: mail@rudybrinkman.nl, vwe@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.org From: vwe@FreeBSD.org X-Mailman-Approved-At: Sat, 08 Mar 2008 04:23:51 +0000 Cc: Subject: Re: amd64/116670: [sata] onboard SATA RAID1 controllers not supported for Asus M2A-VM X-BeenThere: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the AMD64 platform List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 08 Mar 2008 03:32:04 -0000 Synopsis: [sata] onboard SATA RAID1 controllers not supported for Asus M2A-VM State-Changed-From-To: open->feedback State-Changed-By: vwe State-Changed-When: Sat Mar 8 03:28:21 UTC 2008 State-Changed-Why: Please give us output of `pciconf -lv' and a verbose boot dmesg. `devinfo -rv' might also be useful. But when I plug in the Acer LCD, the monitor displays the message "invalid input" until I change the driver spec to "VESA", and no combination of parameters that I have yet tried makes the monitor work at 1440x900. Yes, but can you get it to work at 1440x900 or similar resolutions (unless you don't have a widescreen LCD, anyway)? 1280x1024 is a VESA mode, and the system will let you do those if it doesn't otherwise recognize the hardware, but you can't use widescreen modes, or resolutions much higher than that. > Note that this mb/vc combo worked well at 2048x1546 on a Dell Monitor. > But when I plug in the Acer LCD, the monitor displays the message > "invalid input" until I change the driver spec to "VESA", and no > combination of parameters that I have yet tried makes the monitor work > at 1440x900. All of my circles are ellipses as a result. For the record, I don't believe the problem is FreeBSD or X.org. I've got both an Acer and a Samsung that I've attached to a couple of such systems: 6.2-STABLE/X.org-6.9.0 with a Radeon 9200 (which the radeon driver is listed as supporting, unlike the X550), and 7.0-RELEASE/X.org-7.2 running on vmware with the vmware driver. All those combinations work fine at the 1920x1200 max resolution of the monitors. http://www.mired.org/consulting.html Independent Network/Unix/Perforce consultant, email for more information.
