These represent problem reports covering all versions including experimental development code and obsolete releases. Bugs can be in one of several states: o - open A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed. a - analyzed The problem is understood and a solution is being sought. f - feedback Further work requires additional information from the originator or the community - possibly confirmation of the effectiveness of a proposed solution. p - patched A patch has been committed, but some issues (MFC and / or confirmation from originator) are still open. r - repocopy The resolution of the problem report is dependent on a repocopy operation within the CVS repository which is awaiting completion. s - suspended The problem is not being worked on, due to lack of information or resources. This is a prime candidate for somebody who is looking for a project to do. If the problem cannot be solved at all, it will be closed, rather than suspended. c - closed A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated, documented, and tested -- or when fixing the problem is abandoned. I'm really sorry if that makes us the bad guys. In all honesty, I just agreed with what everyone else thought, and anyone who reads the follow ups will notice that I didn't touch or even review the PR back then. Why? One example is the way we keep track of proposed ideas for student projects or other nascent development projects. It would be great to have a dynamic web app which displays all the different ideas in different categories, with searching functionality, and most importantly, with some kind of voting functionality so that others could vote and comment on proposals. The current process of manually editing the XML files and then waiting for the web build to make the changes live is error prone, tedious, and doesn't allow voting or validation of individual ideas. Does anyone have experience running a php based voting/ideas board that we could use for summer of code project ideas and other experiments? Ideally we'd run this as an experiment on a separate server, as we did with wikitest.freebsd.org for years, and then maybe move it to official freebsd.org machines at a later date. Ever. Forget. It should at least cgi or, as aforemetioned, a wiki-like page. There can be already some wiki engines which allow voting. -- WBR, Vadim Goncharov. Apart from that: - the wiki doesn't seem to be able to provide what Murray is interested in - I like Murrays idea - I don't care where the ideas page is located (static/wiki/...), as long as we have something to present to people which want to contribute Bye, Alexander. --=20 http://www.Leidinger.net Alexander @ Leidinger.net: PGP ID =3D B0063FE7 http://www.FreeBSD.org netchild @ FreeBSD.org : PGP ID =3D 72077137 The duration of passion is proportionate with the original resistance of the woman. =09=09-- Honore DeBalzac From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Mar 18 14:00:03 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 21CCB106566B for ; Tue, 18 Mar 2008 14:00:03 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2165E8FC2B for ; Tue, 18 Mar 2008 14:00:03 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.2/8.14.2) with ESMTP id m2IE03hx078325 for ; Tue, 18 Mar 2008 14:00:03 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.2/8.14.1/Submit) id m2IE02Z5078324; Tue, 18 Mar 2008 14:00:03 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Date: Tue, 18 Mar 2008 14:00:03 GMT Message-Id: <200803181400.m2IE02Z5078324@freefall.freebsd.org> To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org From: John Baldwin Cc: Subject: Re: docs/121821: [patch] wpa_supplicant.conf.5 - provide pointer to sample configuration file X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: John Baldwin List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 18 Mar 2008 14:00:03 -0000 The following reply was made to PR docs/121821; it has been noted by GNATS. It's just as easy for a bad programmer to write bad perl code as it is for them to write bad PHP code. The one thing I don't like about Perl is that there is too much of a reliance on third party modules for just about everything. At least PHP has (most) of what you need built in. Bottom line is that there are pros and cons to just about every language out there. That said, I'm quite fond of python/pylons/django so I don't mind what happens, but it's not really fair to write off PHP just because so many developers who use it are rubbish. One of the worst things about it is that it doesn't support placeholders/binds in query strings. Another horrible aspect is that there's a separate API function name per DBI, rather than using a standard calling convention and let you pick a database driver to use (like perl and most other languages). The only reason people use PHP -- and that includes me (yes, I speak fluent PHP) -- is because it's *convenient*. It interfaces with webservers in a much "nicer" way, and has a significant number of API functions that are more web-friendly than, say, perl. And don't even get me started on how to debug PHP. I hope you enjoy using print/echo repetitively throughout code. I have no interest in Python, because any language which treats whitespace and tabs differently can rot (even assemblers don't behave this way!). And I will strangle whoever recommends Ruby or Ruby on Rails. > > - Murray (who doesn't know/use PHP, but knows that the freebsd > > web presence is notably missing something like it) > > Anything but PHP. I would agree with this. One can accomplish great things with p5-libwww. The existing CMSs out there (for both PHP and perl) are either horribly written, or bloated beyond belief. The same goes for most Wiki software, again regardless of PHP or perl. Then again, all said comments are coming from a person who's very much a minimalist. :-) -- | Jeremy Chadwick jdc at parodius.com | | Parodius Networking http://www.parodius.com/ | | UNIX Systems Administrator Mountain View, CA, USA | | Making life hard for others since 1977. Hmm, so there is the src/contrib/wpa_supplicant/examples subdirectory which contains some simple examples. Do you think those are suitable to install? Also, my path above is wrong it is /usr/share/examples/wpa_supplicant (no etc) which is quite common among other apps and I wouldn't move it from there. A nested directory in etc would have been odd, but that isn't the case. :) -- John Baldwin From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Mar 19 15:19:29 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D54FF1065678 for ; Wed, 19 Mar 2008 15:19:29 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from murray@stokely.org) Received: from ug-out-1314.google.com (ug-out-1314.google.com [66.249.92.175]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5D66F8FC1D for ; Wed, 19 Mar 2008 15:19:28 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from murray@stokely.org) Received: by ug-out-1314.google.com with SMTP id y2so1398084uge.37 for ; Wed, 19 Mar 2008 08:19:27 -0700 (PDT) Received: by 10.66.252.18 with SMTP id z18mr691709ugh.37.1205939967267; Wed, 19 Mar 2008 08:19:27 -0700 (PDT) Received: by 10.67.103.9 with HTTP; Wed, 19 Mar 2008 08:19:27 -0700 (PDT) Message-ID: <2a7894eb0803190819la4fe2e4pc8a38187343b9e96@mail.gmail.com> Date: Wed, 19 Mar 2008 08:19:27 -0700 From: "Murray Stokely" To: "Jeremy Chadwick" In-Reply-To: <20080319091659.GA8969@eos.sc1.parodius.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline References: <2a7894eb0803172207s20aede75w5632bd463654cc77@mail.gmail.com> <2a7894eb0803180812u147de98cnb7cdbfe1e6fe6562@mail.gmail.com> <20080319091659.GA8969@eos.sc1.parodius.com> Cc: Vadim Goncharov , freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Need an environment for dynamic web content for freebsd.org X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 19 Mar 2008 15:19:30 -0000 Apparently there is a MoinMoin plugin for voting that we're going to look at. This doesn't really seem to be exactly what we're looking for because we are not looking to hold elections -- we want to accept new items, allow users to vote and comment on existing items, and present a sorted list of the most highly ranked items, so I'd still be happy if anyone can present other solutions we should investigate. - Murray On 3/19/08, Jeremy Chadwick wrote: > On Wed, Mar 19, 2008 at 08:21:01AM +0000, Vadim Goncharov wrote: > > >> No. Not PHP. Then it should be patched to be, isn't it? I am not sure there exist exact solution of what you want. BTW, in terms of language comparison and advocacy it is better to build this on Java's JSP, thus showing that FreeBSD perfectly supports "serious corporate solutions" :) And PHP has too may vulnerbilities _in_ _the_ _interpreter_ _itself_ - no matter how good PHP programmer avoids bugs in web application if server itself is vulnerables. Patches and setup could avoid damaging root and other users, but who cares if it is enough to deface a site and make such a bad PR for FreeBSD Project?.. -- WBR, Vadim Goncharov. From: Josh Webb To: bug-followup@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Re: docs/121871: ftpd does interpret configuration files as documented Date: Thu, 20 Mar 2008 10:18:20 -0500 Yeah, looks like mostly a documentation problem. The ftpchroot(5) man page, which is also the ftpusers(5) man page, indicates that it is for controlling ftpd(8). The ftpusers(5) man page references ftpd.conf(5), which as Vadim Goncharov stated, is only used by lukemftpd(8). If two ftp daemons are going to be included in the base system, both of which use ftpchroot and ftpusers but parse them differently, the man pages for those files should describe how they are used by each of the two daemons. As a side note, it sounds like I can get the behavior I was looking for by using lukemftpd, rather than ftpd. I have already submitted an approved end of the year report for the year 2005 to my head office here in Accra-Ghana and they will never know of this excess. I have since then, placed this amount on a Non-Investment Account without a beneficiary. Upon your response, I will configure your name on our database as holder of the Non-Investment Account. I will then guide you on how to apply to my head office for the Account Closure/ bank-to-bank remittance of the funds to your designated bank account. If you concur with this proposal, I intend for you to retain 30% of the funds while 70% shall be for me. The main drawbacks I see with the current system include : * Strict XML schema requires careful text editing in a tedious file format to add new ideas to the list. * Anyone can propose an idea, but there is no feedback mechanism to separate the good ideas from the very bad ideas on the list. o Some very senior developers have vehement objections to prominently placed items on the current list, but have no avenue of listing their alternate point of views on the project. o It is not possible to see the ideas with the most recent "buzz" of users commenting/voting positively on them. * There is no notification mechanism when new ideas are added to the list. * Searching / sorting is primitive. And some of the many new features that I think a web app would give us include : * Allow anyone to propose a new idea online. * Allow anyone to comment and vote on previously proposed ideas. * Provide an RSS feed of the newest ideas. * Provide an RSS feed of the comments/votes for any specific idea. * Export the entire ideas list to something closely approximating our existing ideas.xml file (so that we could augment rather than replace the current system, if desired). * Allow one to sort and search the ideas list by category, proposer, votes, summary title, or full text. * Anonymous ideas/comments are hidden by default until cleared by a moderator. * Moderator bits to be set for certain users so that they can moderate the above (can subscribe to an rss file for unmoderated ideas and comments needing their attention). * Import functionality to import the current ideas.xml file. Screenshots and details on the wiki here : http://wiki.freebsd.org/IdeasWebApp. Most of the above functionality was implemented in a couple of hours based on the existing static CSS stylesheets from freebsd.org for the presentation. Login/authentication is a big remaining hurdle if we want to avoid making everyone create yet another account. I will look at integrating it with OpenID later this weekend. Would like to hear additional ideas about this proposal, and any concerns about replacing or at least augmenting the static xml system we currently use with a web application. That's a shame. Unfortunately this needs a change in the behavior of such developers, not a change in the presentation layer. So it is not really a drawback of the current system. Please fix this part in the wiki. > o It is not possible to see the ideas with the most recent > "buzz" of users commenting/voting positively on them. > * There is no notification mechanism when new ideas are added to the list. Sorry, this is not entirely true. Committers should have no problem to get a notification in case they are interested. Either with their own mailfilter, or by using our dfilter (or how the name if this thing is). > * Searching / sorting is primitive. > > And some of the many new features that I think a web app would give us include : > > * Allow anyone to propose a new idea online. > * Allow anyone to comment and vote on previously proposed ideas. What is this voting supposed to tell us? If users vote for features they want to see, then I think it's a great idea. We would get feedback what is the most desired stuff. If developers vote against an entry, it's a bad idea. Voting (which is by definition a binary pro/con for an item) is not what we need to do here. Developers need to review with a technical (or legal) argument against something. Just a "I don't like this" or "this is bullshit" or "this is not a good idea" without an explanation why will result in a very negative image and people will refuse to submit ideas. The screenshot suggests you want to use it for rating by developers. As said, in this case a simple voting is not enough. The Google SoC webapp seems to better in this regard, it allows to give comments. The rest is policy (the moderators should remove negative ratings without appropriate comments and the person which did this rating needs to be notified about/before this removal so he can take appropriate action like improving the comment or adding his rating again with a better comment). So basically my comment for this is: an "interest" value for users (simple voting), instead of rating would be better for the voting part. To rate an entry by developers there needs to be more than a simple voting interface. > * Provide an RSS feed of the newest ideas. RSS should also be possible for the current one, so this is not unique to a web app. > * Provide an RSS feed of the comments/votes for any specific idea. > * Export the entire ideas list to something closely approximating > our existing ideas.xml file (so that we could augment rather than > replace the current system, if desired). Both can be normal text fields. For difficulty we could give examples of easy/medium/hard or "expert needed"/"entry level" or something like this. For complexity maybe something like "touches a lot of different subsystems" or "self contained" or something like this. What about predefined "tags". SOC could be one tag the maintainers create and the "add" or "modify" part of the webapp would convert this into "Suitable for Summer of Code () yes () no". If wee allow free addition of ideas, we also need a public/private thing. Newly added ideas are private by default and need to get changed to public by a maintainer. This would block "semi-spam" (I don't talk about spam in the sense of viagra commercials, but spam in the sense of "FreeBSD is dead, use Linux" stuff or "replace ls/... with gnu fileutils"). So far I didn't got very much of such stuff, but I'm sure with an automated system this would increase. It may also be better to have a separate text field for the requirements. All entries need the requirements section, and we could check this way if someone entered some requirements or not (ok, would be very simple, like "is there more than only whitespace"), but at least we can give feedback that it is a requirement to list requirements. > concerns about replacing or at least augmenting the static xml system > we currently use with a web application. Augment until we think it is ready for public consumption, then replace. This way we can fix the rough edges while getting a benefit already out of it. Ok, but non-committers may also be interested in this. And a notification with all other CVS changes isn't that useful. The new system would allow one to have RSS feeds for specific searches for example, so one could only get a notification when a new filesystem project with difficulty <= 3 and at least one positive comment has been posted. I updated this on the wiki to be more clear. > > * Allow anyone to propose a new idea online. > > * Allow anyone to comment and vote on previously proposed ideas. > > What is this voting supposed to tell us? Yes, users and developers. > If developers vote against an entry, it's a bad idea. Voting (which is I think there are entries on our current list that some developers think are a bad idea, and others think are a great idea. At least that has been the case in the past and I don't think necessarily that 100% of the ideas need to be agreed upon by 100% of committers, especially once we have a mechanism for alternate points of view to be attached as comments and votes to the ideas. > by definition a binary pro/con for an item) is not what we need to do > here. We can put up some text on the vote/comment submission form reminding people of this, and if necessary we can more strongly moderate the comments, and certainly at least warn users that profanity is not helpful. > The screenshot suggests you want to use it for rating by developers. As > said, in this case a simple voting is not enough. The Google SoC webapp > seems to better in this regard, it allows to give comments. The rest is I was confused why we had a miscommunication at this point, then I realized I didn't post a screen shot of the actual individual idea page. Everything you proposed about linking comments with the votes is already implemented. I've added a new screen shot to the wiki. The main UI change is now we only show idea summaries on the main page. You have to click on the summary to get to the full idea page which includes the full text body about the idea, and all comments and votes that have been left about that idea. With the inclusion of comments and voting there is far too much content to all be put on one page once I import all of the existing ideas from ideas.xml. So now there are three screenshots posted. The main screen. The idea submission screen (what happens if you click the "submit idea" link on the main screen). The idea detail screen (what happens if you click the title of an idea from the main screen). > So basically my comment for this is: an "interest" value for users (simple > voting), instead of rating would be better for the voting part. To rate > an entry by developers there needs to be more than a simple voting > interface. Yes I agree with all of this and I'm sorry I didn't post more screenshots to make it clearer. I think we are in complete agreement about this. Let me know if there is more. > > * Provide an RSS feed of the comments/votes for any specific idea. > > * Export the entire ideas list to something closely approximating > > our existing ideas.xml file (so that we could augment rather than > > replace the current system, if desired). > > I have no problems if the ideas list is replaced with such a web app. > > > > * Allow one to sort and search the ideas list by category, > > proposer, votes, summary title, or full text. > > * Anonymous ideas/comments are hidden by default until cleared by > > a moderator. > > * Moderator bits to be set for certain users so that they can > > moderate the above (can subscribe to an rss file for unmoderated ideas > > and comments needing their attention). > > What about email notification? Sure, we can have the web app send out some emails (I've Avoided this so that I don't have to think of all the abuse cases) or at the very least have a script in cron download the rss and turn it into an email and send it out. > Please add "difficulty" and "complexity" on the "enter an idea"-page. > Both can be normal text fields. They'll be unmoderated by default, and hopefully we can give out a half dozen moderator bits to various freebsd committers to help. > It may also be better to have a separate text field for the > requirements. There are two approaches we can take with the different text areas for requirements, difficulty level, time estimates, etc. We can either have separate text fields for all of them, or one large text field pre-filled in with something like "Your project idea here Requirements: * example: Familiarity with C language. * Familiarity with TCP/IP RFCs. Difficultly level: moderate " I lean more towards having a single text field, pre-filled in the way we'd like to see it, rather than having many different text boxes we must deal with. > Augment until we think it is ready for public consumption, then > replace. This way we can fix the rough edges while getting a benefit > already out of it. Sounds good. I think in fact we can very easily augment it like this : 1. Import all ideas.xml into this system, so that all existing ideas are open for comment/voting. 2. Implement export to ideas.xml feature. 3. Change the xsl file in the static web build to include a link next to each idea that says "Leave a comment about this idea." or, if comments have been made, "View comments by others about this idea." and just have those links go to the relevant idea in this app. That just means we need to add an "idea_id" integer field to the existing ideas.xml file, so it knows how to construct the appropriate links for that idea (http://webapp/ideas/). - Murray
