Due to limitations in the freebsd allocator, sometimes requesting a 16k aligned block of dma memory fails. As a temporary work around the wpi driver reattempts the allocation. If it truely does fail you'll not get a wpi0 device showing up, which clearly you did :). These warning messages will go away when I sync the next lot of updates to the driver which aren't quite ready yet. Can you describe a little more what you mean by wpi doesn't work? It hangs there, with a non-spinning ASCII character, for about 2 minutes - then it boots. I tried entering the following commands in to the loader.conf to no avail: set hint.atkbd.0.disabled="1" set hint.acpi.0.disabled="1" I'm currently using FreeBSD 7.0-RC1, but it has the same behavior with FreeBSD 6.3-RC2. The machine seems to work okay after that, though I am having other problems with the screen going blank when I try to configure X. For now, I was just trying to eliminate the 2 minute pause on acpi.ko. Any suggestions? And the next line or so seen after the pause? If you select to boot verbosely then the section either side of and including this pause in your /var/run/dmesg.boot could be helpful. Just that it's not clear whether the 'acpi.ko message' you're seeing is printed before, during or after loading acpi, ie perhaps that's finished and the pause is before the next thing you see, in which case it could be hanging on something network related, or something else altogether .. cheers, Ian From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jan 8 07:55:33 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EFBEA16A417 for ; Tue, 8 Jan 2008 07:55:33 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from vdemart1@tin.it) Received: from smtp5.aruba.it (smtpd3.aruba.it [62.149.128.208]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 4376E13C455 for ; Tue, 8 Jan 2008 07:55:32 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from vdemart1@tin.it) Received: (qmail 26163 invoked by uid 89); 8 Jan 2008 07:55:28 -0000 Received: by simscan 1.1.0 ppid: 26140, pid: 26154, t: 0.2502s scanners: clamav: 0.88.4/m:40/d:1722 Received: from unknown (HELO ?10.155.100.51?) If so then Atheros contributed support to the madwifi project in the form of a patch against the i386 (only) hal.o file; you can retrieve it from their svn repo/web site. I am working on an updated hal build that includes support for this and other newer ath parts but it's blocked by a showstopper bug. No ETA. Ok. It's still not really clear to me whether the pause occurs during or after loading acpi.ko, but I'm suspecting afterwards, as there don't appear to be any ACPI issues logged. I noticed nothing obvious in your verbose dmesg, but me noticing nothing says very little indeed .. Does this laptop have a floppy drive? A serial port? If so, they seem to not be being properly detected. If not, perhaps they may exist on an optional docking station, which may explain the probe attempts? I did the same, but also added 0x2A02 to the IS_I965G() define at the top of /usr/src/sys/dev/drm/i915_dma.c I'm not sure if I should have though as I have really no knowledge of the chip's capabilities. ;-) In any case, it seems to work. TSC clock: 133637718 Hz > CPU: Pentium/P54C (133.64-MHz 586-class CPU) Perhaps also relevant from later in your dmesg: Timecounter "TSC" frequency 133637582 Hz quality 800 Timecounters tick every 1.000 msec So it presumably wound up using TSC clock anyway, despite the apparent struggle with clock calibration. My Compaq 1500c discounts the TSC because APM is enabled, so uses i8254. According to loader.conf you don't have APM hint.apm.0.disabled, but have you tried apm_load="YES" as I don't think it's in 7 (or even 6.x?) GENERIC kernels any more. kern.timecounter.hardware: i8254 kern.timecounter.choice: TSC(-1000) i8254(0) dummy(-1000000) kern.clockrate: { hz = 200, tick = 5000, profhz = 1024, stathz = 128 } I figured, on a few wet-finger-in-the-wind trials a year or so ago, that 1000Hz slicing was too busy for my 300MHz machine; I recall it adding about 10% to idle load. It works fine at 200Hz. 1000Hz is of course fine for modern machines that run 10-20 times faster than your 133MHz, so I'd suggest trying maybe kern.hz="100" in loader.conf? Looks like ESS sound is 'almost' detected - I had fun getting this going way back when. If it's at all similar to mine you may need some/all of: # sound_load="YES" # now in kernel # snd_sbc_load="YES" # in kernel # snd_ess_load="YES" # this fixed it .. bridge driver for ESS, kernel 1/8/6 > My loader.conf stuff: > http://www.berklix.com/~jhs/hardware/laptops/dell_latitude_xpi_p133st/loader.conf > If anyone has ideas ?
