An example of the problem can still be seen here: http://opal.com/jr/xterm-corruption.gif Quick summary: Wide xterm windows (wider than 158 columns, 1440 pixels) have the problem shown, but only when at least that many columns are on the screen. That is, moving a wide window so that it is partially off the screen causes the corruption to cease when less than 158 columns are displayed. Further investigation has unearthed that this problem happens only when the CPU frequency is set to low levels, which was happening because of powerd. When the CPU frequency is set low, these pixel corruptions happen. When the CPU freq is raised they do not: everything is normal. Disabling powerd and manually adjusting the CPU frequency gives these resul= ts: # sysctl dev.cpu.0.freq_levels dev.cpu.0.freq_levels: 3176/-1 2779/-1 2382/-1 1985/-1 1588/-1 1191/-1 794/= -1 397/-1 CPU freq from 3176 to 1191 causes no problems. CPU freq at 794 or 397 causes pixel corruptions. This problem did not happen on RELENG_6. -jr --Sig_/WCBzRpJNPliuNunr_Ab_P+_ Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name=signature.asc Content-Disposition: attachment; filename=signature.asc -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.7 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQFHnTW4ls33urr0k4kRAi91AJ9kFMJT6o5yVqE+sFHiVV0E0BavCwCfQ8xg lA9N8zDfUVB//044vfGvHeQ= =O9jf -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --Sig_/WCBzRpJNPliuNunr_Ab_P+_-- From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jan 28 11:07:14 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2E4D216A4C8 for ; Mon, 28 Jan 2008 11:07:14 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1C5D713C4F0 for ; Mon, 28 Jan 2008 11:07:14 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.2/8.14.2) with ESMTP id m0SB7DNp016519 for ; Mon, 28 Jan 2008 11:07:13 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.2/8.14.1/Submit) id m0SB7Dcf016515 for freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.org; Mon, 28 Jan 2008 11:07:13 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Date: Mon, 28 Jan 2008 11:07:13 GMT Message-Id: <200801281107.m0SB7Dcf016515@freefall.freebsd.org> X-Authentication-Warning: freefall.freebsd.org: gnats set sender to owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org using -f From: FreeBSD bugmaster To: freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Current problem reports assigned to freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.org X-BeenThere: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: X11 on FreeBSD -- maintaining and support List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 28 Jan 2008 11:07:14 -0000 Current FreeBSD problem reports Critical problems Serious problems S Tracker Resp. Often, this is due to a better alternative having become available and/or the cessation of development on the existing port. In some cases, ports are marked for removal because they fail to build and install correctly from their sources, or otherwise fail in operation. The ports, and the reason and date that they have been scheduled for removal, are listed below. If no one has stepped forward before that time to propose a way to fix the problems (such as via a PR), the ports will be deleted. portname: x11-fonts/XFree86-4-font100dpi description: XFree86-4 I have used a stock ports build of x.org 7.2 on FreeBSD 6.2-STABLE with an ATI X300 and stock graphics/dri, graphics/libGL, graphics/libdrm of the same vintage without any problems. i386 (32-bit) Platform CPU: Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 3.20GHz (3200.13-MHz 686-class CPU) Origin = "GenuineIntel" Id = 0xf41 Stepping = 1 Logical CPUs per core: 2 real memory = 2146893824 (2047 MB) FreeBSD/SMP: Multiprocessor System Detected: 4 CPUs I have since upgraded to X.org 7.3 on 6.3-STABLE and cannot reproduce this problem. Yes, AIGLX is broken, but this will result in a kernel panic, so don't enable it in xorg.conf and you should be fine. I would recommend closing ports/117788 as invalid or unreproducible. IMO proceed as usual: * submit a PR * make sure it is assigned to what MAINTAINER=3D says (x11@freebsd.org?) * wait and possibly commit after maintainer timeout; probably send a followup that you intend to commit this via maintainer timeout some time before you actually commit (you are not enforced to do this via some policy). I have posted the contents of Xorg.0.log in reply to an > earlier email in this thread. Did you get it? Hi Siraj, Yes, I saw it. Here's the problem: you've got an Intel i810 graphics chipset with a Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller. If you look at the manpage i810(4) you will see that it isn't supported yet (or not as the port existed a few days ago) so X is falling back to VESA mode. Now from your log, it looks like you could get vesa mode going but it would be at 640x480 i.e: pretty unusable for X. It looks like it's working with Linux: http://forum.compiz-fusion.org/showthread.php?t=6725 So what I suggest you do is wait patiently for the port to be updated...or What you could do is post your xorg.conf to: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org with a description of your graphics hardware and ask them why it seems to work under Linux and not under FreeBSD. Or if it does work under FreeBSD, how to get it going. I'm cc'ing this to freebsd-x11. Perhaps you can reply back with your xorg.conf & hopefully the good folks on that list can help you out. Before I carry on with my previous problem I would like to digress a bit: I have just installed FreeBSDS 6.3 on another one of my notebooks (Sony VGN S-150), which previously ran FreeBSD/Xorg fine, is not running xorg again. It is giving me errors. This is a 4 yeard old notebook, and I have ran Xorg previosuly on it. I did try Xorg -configure and then Xorg -config xorg.conf.new but still errors. So, before I do any other tweaking, I present the contents of the command pkg_info | grep xorg here xorg-apps-7.3 X.org apps meta-port xorg-cf-files-1.0.2_2 X.org cf files for use with imake builds xorg-docs-1.4,1 X.org documentation files xorg-fonts-100dpi-7.3 X.Org 100dpi bitmap fonts xorg-fonts-75dpi-7.3 X.Org 75dpi bitmap fonts xorg-fonts-miscbitmaps-7.3 X.Org miscellaneous bitmap fonts xorg-fonts-truetype-7.3 X.Org TrueType fonts xorg-libraries-7.3_1 X.org libraries meta-port xorg-server-1.4_3,1 X.Org X server and related programs and the contents of the Xorg.0.log file in /var/log here X.Org X Server 1.4.0 Release Date: 5 September 2007 X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0 Build Operating System: FreeBSD 6.3-RELEASE i386 Current Operating System: FreeBSD dhcppc1 6.3-RELEASE FreeBSD 6.3-RELEASE #0: Wed Jan 16 04:18:52 UTC 2008 root@dessler.cse.buffalo.edu:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC i386 Build Date: 01 December 2007 09:49:15PM Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org to make sure that you have the latest version.
