The LSI SAS1078 is well-supported by the mfi(4) driver, so it should see any volumes that are configured. I assume you've configured a RAID-1 volume using the BIOS and that the BIOS sees the volume during boot? -- John Baldwin From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Dec 28 16:30:16 2010 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 37980106566B for ; Tue, 28 Dec 2010 16:30:16 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EDF1D8FC18 for ; Tue, 28 Dec 2010 16:30:15 +0000 (UTC) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.4/8.14.4) with ESMTP id oBSGUFFw034018 for ; Tue, 28 Dec 2010 16:30:15 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.4/8.14.4/Submit) id oBSGUFDp034007; Tue, 28 Dec 2010 16:30:15 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Resent-Date: Tue, 28 Dec 2010 16:30:15 GMT Resent-Message-Id: <201012281630.oBSGUFDp034007@freefall.freebsd.org> Resent-From: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org (GNATS Filer) Resent-To: freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.org Resent-Reply-To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org, David Rawling Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E7EA9106566B for ; Tue, 28 Dec 2010 16:24:16 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from nobody@FreeBSD.org) Received: from red.freebsd.org (unknown [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::22]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D6DF88FC0A for ; Tue, 28 Dec 2010 16:24:16 +0000 (UTC) Received: from red.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by red.freebsd.org (8.14.4/8.14.4) with ESMTP id oBSGOG46050918 for ; Tue, 28 Dec 2010 16:24:16 GMT (envelope-from nobody@red.freebsd.org) Received: (from nobody@localhost) by red.freebsd.org (8.14.4/8.14.4/Submit) id oBSGOG8D050908; Tue, 28 Dec 2010 16:24:16 GMT (envelope-from nobody) Message-Id: <201012281624.oBSGOG8D050908@red.freebsd.org> Date: Tue, 28 Dec 2010 16:24:16 GMT From: David Rawling To: freebsd-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org X-Send-Pr-Version: www-3.1 X-Mailman-Approved-At: Tue, 28 Dec 2010 16:46:25 +0000 Cc: Subject: amd64/153496: Install on Hyper-V leaves corrupt filesystems (incl root) X-BeenThere: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the AMD64 platform List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 28 Dec 2010 16:30:16 -0000 >Number: 153496 >Category: amd64 >Synopsis: Install on Hyper-V leaves corrupt filesystems (incl root) >Confidential: no >Severity: serious >Priority: medium >Responsible: freebsd-amd64 >State: open >Quarter: >Keywords: >Date-Required: >Class: sw-bug >Submitter-Id: current-users >Arrival-Date: Tue Dec 28 16:30:15 UTC 2010 >Closed-Date: >Last-Modified: >Originator: David Rawling >Release: 8.2-RC1 >Organization: >Environment: FreeBSD 8.2-RC1 FreeBSD 8.2-RC1 #0: Wed Dec 22 17:34:20 UTC 2010 root@mason.cse.buffalo.edu:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC amd64 >Description: Installation of FreeBSD 8.2-RC1 fails on a Windows 2008 R2 Hyper-V virtual machine. 8.1 upgrades (either live or from DVD) exhibit the same issue. Installation of 8.0 was flawless (multiple servers, multiple guests). Symptom is generally that the VM will completely fail to start after installation - no FreeBSD boot menu, no kernel. Cursor shows empty, or a hyphen, at approx Row 3 Col 1 of the screen. Booting the Fixit shell on the DVD and mounting the root partition shows the partition is empty. Running fsck on the root partition shows errors for all items on disk - all are moved to lost+found. Problem could be timing related - in performing this installation and documenting it for this PR, the bug did not exhibit identical symptoms - the significantly delayed/slower build was able to display the FreeBSD boot menu, but hangs after selection with a backslash displayed in Row 25 Col 1 of the screen. Booting the fixit shell suggests the root filesystem is OK (mounts and displays a normal looking FreeBSD root directory). >How-To-Repeat: Virtual machine configuration is as follows: 1 virtual processor 512MB RAM IDE controller 0 port 0: 40GB VHD (virtual hard disk) IDE controller 1 port 0: DVD Drive (FreeBSD-8.2-RC1-amd64-dvd.iso) Virtual SCSI controller Legacy Network Adapter COM1 COM2 Diskette Drive (no diskette) Follow the installation process: * Country Select: 232 United States * Standard installation * Starting with an empty disk (ie delete slices): + A (Use entire disk) + Q (Finish) * Standard MBR * Partition configuration (created in this order): + ad0s1a: 2048MB UFS2 on / + ad0s1b: 1024MB swap + ad0s1d: 6144MB UFS2+S on /var + ad0s1e: 2048MB UFS2+S on /tmp + ad0s1f: 29690MB UFS2+S on /usr (all remaining disk) + Q (Finish) * Distributions: + Custom - base - kernels (All) - man * Install from CD/DVD * Confirm installation * Progress bars show for base (42 chunks), GENERIC (53 chunks) and manpages (7 chunks) as they are extracted. From: David Rawling To: bug-followup@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Re: amd64/153496: Install on Hyper-V leaves corrupt filesystems (incl root) Date: Wed, 29 Dec 2010 20:00:35 +1100 It appears that the cause for the variable success of deployment (and potentially this PR) could be related to the fact that tools (such as tzsetup, dhclient and gunzip) are core dumping during the setup phase. For example, scrolling back on console 2 after a further setup attempt: pid 50 (dhclient), uid 0: exited on signal 11 (core dumped) /libexec/ld-elf.so.1: /usr/lib/libwrap.so.6: invalid file format ... pid 50 (dhclient), uid 0: exited on signal 11 (core dumped) pid 51 (ifconfig), uid 0: exited on signal 11 (core dumped) pid 52 (gunzip), uid 0: exited on signal 11 (core dumped) pid 53 (tzsetup), uid 0: exited on signal 10 (core dumped) pid 57 (gunzip), uid 0: exited on signal 11 (core dumped) I have confirmed that the DVD has the correct (MD5 and sha256) checksums - and this host runs other virtual machines with other operating systems without issue, suggesting that there is a reasonable likelihood that the hardware is operating correctly.
