However, noting (as I did) that in the above command, the options did NOTR appear before the nonoption args (which is counter to POSIX rules for commands) I decided to try this instead/also: pkg-config --modversion --debug dbus-1 Now *that* command produces a LOT of debugging output. Hummm.... I have encountered something similar to this situation before, with sopme other package/port in the past that I was also having trouble building. It tried to invoke something... I forget precisely what now... maybe bison... but as in this case, it did so in a way that provided non- option arguments _before_ some option arguments. Hummm... no. It wasn't bison. It was something else. I forget what now but I could go back and look it up. It was somthing needed by something that was needed in order to build "nmh". Anyway, the guy who was the maintainer never could reproduce the problem that I was seeing (and he wasn't nearly as helpful or caring as you) so he just (arrogantly?) closed the PR. Now however I'm thinking that maybe, just maybe, the fact that I use /bin/tcsh rather than /bin/csh may perhaps ... no... nevermind. I just checked and even under /bin/csh _and_ /bin/sh also, the behavior is the same for: pkg-config dbus-1 --modversion --debug i.e. just two error messages about gnome-config... *however* as I've said, putting the options befire the non-option arguments seems to make an enormous differece in terms of the output, and the command rewritten to: pkg-config --modversion --debug dbus-1 seems to produce a whole lotta output. (I have no idea if any of it is in any sense "correct" or not, but at least there is a lot of it.) So now, is THIS my solution? Do I just simply need to find the place in the avahi-app Makefile(s) where the pgk-config command is being invoked, and then re-arrange things so that the options come before non-option args? I guess I'll try and see if I can do that and report back. If you have some other suggestion(s), I'm all ears. Regards, rfg P.S. I don't even understand why people are writting Makefiles that invoke things with non-option args _before_ option args. This is expressely prohibited by the POSIX standard, no? Well, that is what I dimly recall anyway. I guess I'll have to drag out my copy of POSIX to confirm that. (If I wanted to work in an environment and with software where important internationally-recognized standards were simply ignored, then I'd be working on Windoze and sending money to Bill Gates on a regular basis. But I'm a dyed-in-the-wool UNIX bigot. I work on UNIX in the hopes that other people building software for it obey standards... or at least care when they have inadvertantly failed to do so.) >This is the cause of your problem. I agree that it is most likely the cause of _the_ problem. I do not agree that it is *my* problem. Looking now at the version of popt.c (Copyright RedHat, 1998, but which may have been derived from GNU getopt) which has been packed in with pkg-config-0.23_1, I do see that it makes reference to POSIXLY_CORRECT, and that the setting or non-setting of this environment variable then probably does (I'm assuming) logically affect the behavior of argument and option processing. Googling around, I found this: http://www.gnu.org/s/libc/manual/html_node/Using-Getopt.html#Using-Getopt * POSIX demands the following behavior: The first non-option stops option processing. This mode is selected by either setting the environment variable POSIXLY_CORRECT or beginning the options argument string with a plus sign (`+'). I feel sure that I could dredge up the exact POSIX reference (chapter & verse) if I was of a mind to do so. But for now I'll just say that I _am_ quite sure that this GNU documentation I've just quoted from is correct, and that indeed the POSIX commands standard (ISO/IEC 9945-2:1993(E) ANSI/IEEE Std 1003.2-1993) unambiguously _requires_ that option arguments proceed non- option arguments. Given that, is there some _compelling_ reason why the Makefile for avahi-app is electing to deviate from the published POSIX standard (_and_ from nearly 40 years of well-established UNIX tradition & practice) ? Or was this POSIX faux pas just a result of ignorance of the relevant international standard? >Remove this variable, and popt-based applications will work the way they were >intended. As far as I can see, there is nothing whatsoever wrong with the application known as pkg-config. It is behaving as its developer intended. It is using popt and thus benefits from all of the features of that well-written package... _including_ user-optional enforcement of POSIX standards with respect to command line argument/option parsing. Indeed, I have no reason at this point to believe that _any_ "popt-based application" on my entire system is misbehaving in any way. Do you have some basis for asserting that this whole problem I have experienced is due to anything other than just one simple goof by one lone coder who wrote one lone command in one single Makefile (for avahi-app) in a way that violates POSIX, simply because he wasn't aware of the requirements thereof? If not, then may I hunbly suggest fixing the simple (and now obvious) goof in the avahi-app Makefile? Regards, Ron Guilmette (Former member of the ANSI C++ and ANSI C/9x standards comittees) P.S. I see that you have closed this PR (ports/140563). I disagree that it should be closed, and I request that you re-open the PR. A Makefile which is part of avahi-app is violating POSIX command invocation standards for no apparently good reason, thus causing build problems for some users. This is a bug. As of this moment, it remains unresolved. If you prefer (or insist) I'll file a new PR which will make it more clear and apparent that this is the exact (and actual) problem. Sweeping the problem under the rug does not appear to me to be an appropriate or proper way to resolve it. I greatly appreciate the work you've done to help me to isolate the problem, but now that it has been isolated and identified, it appears fairly apparent that (a) this is a real bug and that (b) it is _not_ just simply due to "pilot error". Furthermore, it would appear that the following harmless one-line patch will rectify the problem entirely: *** net/avahi-app/work/avahi-0.6.25/configure.ac- Mon Apr 13 18:55:55 2009 --- net/avahi-app/work/avahi-0.6.25/configure.ac Sat Jan 2 18:07:06 2010 *************** *** 563,567 **** AC_DEFINE(HAVE_DBUS, 1, [Whether we have D-Bus or not]) ! '{print $2}'` --- 563,567 ---- AC_DEFINE(HAVE_DBUS, 1, [Whether we have D-Bus or not]) ! DBUS_VERSION=`$PKG_CONFIG --modversion dbus-1` DBUS_VERSION_MAJOR=`echo $DBUS_VERSION | awk -F. '{print $1}'` DBUS_VERSION_MINOR=`echo $DBUS_VERSION | awk -F. '{print $2}'` Note that this simply brings that one line into conformance with POSIX. (Not surprisingly, all of the other invocations of pkg-config within configure.ac are _already_ full conformant.) P.P.S. At the risk of belaboring the point, allow me also to say again what I said earlier... I don't know why people are out there writting Makefiles with commands where the command options _don't_ always come first. I had always believed that this was one of the first things they teach you on day one of UNIX school... the options come first, then the actual command arguments. (Didn't everybody get this on day one of UNIX school??) Anything else is just counter-intutive (and just plain looks wrong, e.g. to at least one old-time hack who has been on UNIX since circa 1983). If you really want to get this fixed, then you need to open a bug at http://avahi.org. But be aware that other ports may do exactly the same thing, and you may have to fight this battle in a lot of other places. Additionally, POSIXLY_CORRECT is a non-default environment variable, and one that we do not test with. We do not have the resources to make sure that all ports build and operate properly with it set. I strongly suggest that if you want a more problem-free experience moving forward, you unset this. Now that I know the problem is in the avahi sources, I will do that too, however... As the maintainer of the FreeBSD port, you _could_ write a FreeBSD-specific patch (along the lines of the one I supplied) which would be applied against the "standard" avahi-app distribution tarball prior to configure/build. I'm not saying that that is the Right Thing or even the Best Thing, but I think you should at least consider it before dismissing the idea out of hand. I understand your point that the FreeBSD port maintainers cannot possibly test all ports with all possible combinations of environment variables, however it seems to me that ports should build with any & all ``reasonable'' sets of environment variables... and I don't consider POSIXLY_CORRECT at all unreasonable. (Take it from me... The vast majority of ports _do_ build with this set. I have hundreds and hundreds that I've built & installed with POSIXLY_CORRECT set.) But your point is well taken that this isn't in any sense FreeBSD's fault. Nontheless, a certainly accomodative frlendliness towards wayward souls such as myself (who use FreeBSD and who have a health respect for standards) would not, I think, be unreasonable. A somewhat different suggestion: I can't see that it would hurt anything to, for example, create a net/avahi-app/scripts/configure script for the port that would explicitly "unset POSIXLY_CORRECT" just prior to invocation of avahi's own configure script. In addition to avoiding having other people like me fall into the trap, at least that would serve to _document_ the fact that this particular port uses non-POSIXly-correct command invocations (unlike the vast majority of other FreeBSD ports). >> P.S. I see that you have closed this PR (ports/140563). I disagree that >> it should be closed, and I request that you re-open the PR. > >No. I have identified the problem as not being a FreeBSD-specific bug. Why didn't you say that in your closing message in this PR then, rather that chalking it up to pilot error, as you seem to have done? (Call me overly sensitive if you like, but this was _not_ a case of pilot error. *I* did not screw up. Whoever wrote configure.ac did, i.e. by breaking a rule relating to UNIX command invocation that has been THE rule since the beginning of time.) I'd appreciate it if you would amend your closing annotation to indicate that yes, this is a _real_ bug... just not one that belongs to FreeBSD exclusively. (I have no objection to you closing the PR as long at it is _with_ that clarification.) >If you really want to get this fixed, then you need to open a bug at >http://avahi.org. Thanks. Shall do. >But be aware that other ports may do exactly the same >thing, and you may have to fight this battle in a lot of other places. Thanks for the friendly caution, but I am not at all worried. As I've said, I have built hundreds and hundreds of FreeBSD ports... over a span of more than ten years. In all that time, I've only seen a grand total of -two- (count 'em, two) instances of this kind of command invocation faux pas... one of them being this new one in avahi-app. (The other one, as I said, was in some port required by the nmh mail port... and that one got fixed already, I think.) >Additionally, POSIXLY_CORRECT is a non-default environment variable, and >one that we do not test with. OK. Sounds reasonable. Are these two important facts documented anywhere? (One hopes so. If not, they should be.) >We do not have the resources to make sure >that all ports build and operate properly with it set. Roger wilco. Understood. (Anyway, you don't have to worry about that. *I* have already, informally, done the test builds on hundreds and hundreds of ports, and trust me... hardly anybody messes up so bad that they put non-option arguments before option arguments. Like I said, most people learn the Right Way to order command line things on Day One of UNIX school.) >I strongly suggest that if you want a more problem-free experience moving >forward, you unset this. Thank you for the friendly suggestion. I wil take it under advisement. (Certainly, you are correct that my life is likely to be more problem-free if I follow your advice in this regard. This should get fixed in GNOME 2.30 now that we have DeviceKit-power, and can then update g-p-m. The rest of this manual page describes lower level ways of changing set- tings. I'll repeat that because it's important: The easy way to configure xscreensaver is to run the xscreensaver- demo(1) program. You shouldn't need to know any of the stuff described in this manual unless you are trying to do something tricky, like customize xscreensaver for site-wide use or something. -- Jerry gesbbb@yahoo.com |::::======= |::::======= |=========== |=========== | The mosquito exists to keep the mighty humble. Just sticking an oar in edge-wise: I think that (despite certain Posix dictates still currently in effect) you'll find that precisely this kind of argument/switch re-ordering is quite common now, and (as near as I can see) is not going to go away. Consider that cvs, p4, openssl, geom, gmirror, (off the top of my head) also have command lines of the form program [global switches] command [command-switches] [command-arguments], where "command" is a non-switch, non-optional argument that describes the particular thing that you want "program" to do. I doubt very much that this kind of use is going to go away just because the IEEE Posix committee stamps their feet. It has always been the BSD way (in my experience) to follow Posix as well as possible, but not to the detriment of existing functionality. I'm happy with that stance. I expect that you'll have a long fight to get this trend to change, for multi-function command-line utilities. Also, it might be a good idea to provide an overview of all packages installed on your system (i.e. an `ls /var/db/pkg`). Put your attachment up on any website, copy-and-paste into http://freebsd-gnome.pastebin.com, or use send-pr(1) with the attachment. Try to avoid sending any attachments to the mailing list (gnome@FreeBSD.org), because attachments sent to FreeBSD mailing lists are usually discarded by the mailing list software. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/misc/gnome-icon-theme. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/x11-toolkits/libgnomeprintui. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/graphics/gthumb. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/graphics/gthumb. ============================================================================ That's it. The thumb rule of use ports tree when you checkout (update). You must always update your installed ports (be sure to view /usr/ports/UPDATING) before you try to go to /usr/ports/foo/bar and install it. If you don't update your ports tree then it's safe to go to /usr/ports/foo/bar and install it at any time. In many cases these ports are failing to compile on some subset of the FreeBSD build environments. The most common problem is that recent versions of -CURRENT include gcc4.2, which is much stricter than older versions. The next most common problem is that compiles succeed on the i386 architecture (e.g. the common Intel PC), but fail on one or more of the other architectures due to assumptions about things such as size of various types, byte-alignment issues, and so forth. In occasional cases we see that the same port may have different errors in different build environments. The script that runs on the build cluster uses heuristics to try to 'guess' the error type to help you isolate problems, but it is only a rough guide. One more note: on occasion, there are transient build errors seen on the build farm. Unfortunately, there is not yet any way for this algorithm to tell the difference (humans are much, much better at this kind of thing.) The errors are listed below. In the case where the same problem exists on more than one build environment, the URL points to the latest errorlog for that type. (By 'build environment' here we mean 'combination of 6.x/7.x/-current with target architecture'.) (Note: the dates are included to help you to gauge whether or not the error still applies to the latest version. The program that generates this report is not yet able to determine this automatically.) portname: x11/libcapplet broken because: does not build build errors: none. overview: http://portsmon.FreeBSD.org/portoverview.py?category=x11&portname=libcapplet If these errors are ones that you are already aware of, please accept our apologies and ignore this message. On the other hand, if you no longer wish to maintain this port (or ports), please reply with a message stating that, and accept our thanks for your efforts in the past. Every effort has been made to make sure that these error reports really do correspond to a port that you maintain. However, due to the fact that this is an automated process, it may indeed generate false matches. If one of these errors fits that description, please forward this email to the author of this software, Mark Linimon , so that he can attempt to fix the problem in the future. Thanks for your efforts to help improve FreeBSD.
