After the error, startx does not exit and if I use x11vnc I see a black screen with a box that says "Could not start kdeinit4. Check your installation" and a "Okay" button. If I click it, "x11vnc" exits but "startx" does not. However, if I run "/usr/local/kde4/bin/startkde" and "x11vnc" with "-auth" option, I can see the kde4 login screen and after it accepts my credentials I see "Could not start kdeinit4. I'd like to revive this since the issue is topical for the 'happy' owners of IGDNG. I observed the same issue as the Jaap Boender. Additional data can be found bellow: Xorg.0.log: http://pastebin.org/402959 dmesg: http://pastebin.org/402960 pciconf -lv: http://pastebin.org/402963 I've also noticed that guys from linux world stuck with similar issu some time ago and they told that this simple patch fixed it for them: http://people.canonical.com/~hzhang/554569/i915-fix-ironlake-edp-panel-setup-v2.patch So, I'm not sure, but it could be connected somehow with embedded Display Port (eDP) timings handling. And that made me think that there is a slight chance to get it worked with intel-2.9.1 driver (w/o acceleration but it is way better then vesa anyway). Unfortunately due to the lack of knowledge I could not find relevant piece of code in freebsd's sources to give it a try. Could smb. point me where it is worth to dig (i.e. prove/decline that it will/won't work). However, neither gv nor acroread, exhibit this program, only Paraview. I wonder if this line #7 0x0000000802256a4b in DrawableGone () from /usr/local/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so is an indication of where the problem might be? How can I not load the GLX extension? The X logs indicate that this module is loaded by default. (WW) "record" will not be loaded unless you've specified it to be loaded elsewhere. (II) "glx" will be loaded even though the default is to disable it. (II) "record" will be loaded even though the default is to disable it. but I don't see the modules being reported as loaded after that. So I presume the above 2 info lines are plain wrong. many thanks anton -- Anton Shterenlikht Room 2.6, Queen's Building Mech Eng Dept Bristol University University Walk, Bristol BS8 1TR, UK Tel: +44 (0)117 331 5944 Fax: +44 (0)117 929 4423 From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jul 19 14:26:13 2010 Return-Path: Delivered-To: x11@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 21E8310656AB; I installed Debian unstable,=20 if Debian ist told to use KMS, the problem does not occur, if Debian=20 runs without KMS it exhibits the same problem as FreeBSD. You say one of these is the LCD of the laptop. What is the other? Are you testing with the LCD only? (It seems so from the log, but doesn't hurt to be sure) 2) The video ram found by vesa(4) is very low (mine finds 8000kB): (II) VESA(0): Total Memory: 13 64KB banks (832kB) It would be useful to try to investigate why. (Do you have agp activated in your kernel? I do, although of course vesa provides no acceleration in that area.) 3) This is interesting: (II) VESA(0): Attempting to use 85Hz refresh for mode "640x480" (111) Is this Hz value correct for the display you are testing with? My LCD says 60 Hz. I am sorry that I cannot give you more direct advice, but maybe there is somethine in there which may give you an idea... -- Regards: Szilveszter ADAM Budapest Hungary From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jul 19 21:37:12 2010 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 222321065769 for ; Mon, 19 Jul 2010 21:37:12 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from hpcharles@gmail.com) Received: from mail-ew0-f54.google.com (mail-ew0-f54.google.com [209.85.215.54]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A45F98FC19 for ; Mon, 19 Jul 2010 21:37:11 +0000 (UTC) Received: by ewy26 with SMTP id 26so1676408ewy.13 for ; Mon, 19 Jul 2010 14:37:10 -0700 (PDT) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=domainkey-signature:mime-version:received:received:reply-to :in-reply-to:references:date:message-id:subject:from:to:cc :content-type:content-transfer-encoding; bh=+FXW/erj0O2TdlcghF84QdG5UgtW2SknXp9FzrvSYw8=; b=b9YHhgWXX+x9csx627GRXmrkqOSVJYN/P+dd00MknDtz1zmUkD2gKDz1mjA2maDWSD xuwFcrugqUmiU234zOiXPI1XtiMiIvkQJ1nFeasu/+c7ygZm0To5KNr8dmF+/gfE4dEH A3RuKk4GLiXeVEH2XN5/ZZ8m8c/cV1sE4MjVU= DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=nofws; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=mime-version:reply-to:in-reply-to:references:date:message-id :subject:from:to:cc:content-type:content-transfer-encoding; b=teQx1Oz4saTeNlHwHN35i2HjynGu5iPmfJjav0JplpZlyR5BryZk0T8I6lyaL3Pl7s UqhKOb//iEafgd1Zb8X8utkzx9wiHnD0k+MyzsB56i2NisOkXd/yStE1fTuMP9L607da 7V4VsVtpwkvMqIxPnkm2BzGJ4UW2TN2Q98M2k= MIME-Version: 1.0 Received: by 10.213.19.6 with SMTP id y6mr5097077eba.7.1279575430527; Mon, 19 Jul 2010 14:37:10 -0700 (PDT) Received: by 10.14.53.12 with HTTP; Mon, 19 Jul 2010 14:37:10 -0700 (PDT) In-Reply-To: <20100719184534.GB2050@baranyfelhocske.buza.adamsfamily.xx> References: <20100713171210.GB1943@baranyfelhocske.buza.adamsfamily.xx> <20100716133617.726eebe9@ernst.jennejohn.org> <20100717055429.GA2013@baranyfelhocske.buza.adamsfamily.xx> <20100719184534.GB2050@baranyfelhocske.buza.adamsfamily.xx> Date: Mon, 19 Jul 2010 23:37:10 +0200 Message-ID: From: Henri-Pierre Charles To: Szilveszter Adam Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Cc: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Help needed : FreeBSD 8.1 / xorg / xf86-video-intel / dell400 X-BeenThere: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: hpcharles@gmail.com List-Id: X11 on FreeBSD -- maintaining and support List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 19 Jul 2010 21:37:12 -0000 Hello Adam, thanks for your reply On Mon, Jul 19, 2010 at 8:45 PM, Szilveszter Adam wrote: > 1) It seems you are trying to use a multi-monitor config (with Screen1 > commented out.) In many cases these ports are failing to compile on some subset of the FreeBSD build environments. The most common problem is that recent versions of -CURRENT include gcc4.2, which is much stricter than older versions. The next most common problem is that compiles succeed on the i386 architecture (e.g. the common Intel PC), but fail on one or more of the other architectures due to assumptions about things such as size of various types, byte-alignment issues, and so forth. In occasional cases we see that the same port may have different errors in different build environments. The script that runs on the build cluster uses heuristics to try to 'guess' the error type to help you isolate problems, but it is only a rough guide. One more note: on occasion, there are transient build errors seen on the build farm. Unfortunately, there is not yet any way for this algorithm to tell the difference (humans are much, much better at this kind of thing.) The errors are listed below. In the case where the same problem exists on more than one build environment, the URL points to the latest errorlog for that type. Can you still reproduce the > problem you described with an up-to-date ports tree? FWIW, now I am back from my sabbatical. Having been away for a whole year, I upgraded my system to 7.3-STABLE, blew away and rebuilt the ports with the latest ports tree, and the X server now works pretty good. My only complaint is that it often does not exit cleanly, and if I then kill -KILL it, I get psychedelic screen syndrome and must reboot. (OTOH, who wants to log out anyhow? It's a desktop machine in my office. I xlock it when I go home.) Not sure if I can follow up a lot more. I expect to get new hardware in the not too distant future, and then the problem just might evaporate. - Harald From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Jul 22 12:03:14 2010 Return-Path: Delivered-To: x11@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 45FB2106564A for ; Thu, 22 Jul 2010 12:03:14 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from thomas@infnet.pl) Received: from dps-919.network.szczecin.pl (dps-919.network.szczecin.pl [188.40.90.196]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 042488FC1E for ; Thu, 22 Jul 2010 12:03:13 +0000 (UTC) Received: from lebork by dps-919.network.szczecin.pl with local (Exim 4.69) (envelope-from ) id 1Obu48-00047f-Sz for x11@FreeBSD.org; Thu, 22 Jul 2010 13:35:52 +0200 Received: from 83.13.50.66 ([83.13.50.66]) (SquirrelMail authenticated user thomas@infnet.pl) by infnet.pl with HTTP; Thu, 22 Jul 2010 13:35:52 +0200 (CEST) Message-ID: <646faa0de494913d013c2c041d2bb078.squirrel@infnet.pl> Date: Thu, 22 Jul 2010 13:35:52 +0200 (CEST) From: "Thomas" To: x11@FreeBSD.org User-Agent: SquirrelMail/1.4.15 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain;charset=utf-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-Priority: 3 (Normal) Importance: Normal X-AntiAbuse: This header was added to track abuse, please include it with any abuse report X-AntiAbuse: Primary Hostname - dps-919.network.szczecin.pl X-AntiAbuse: Original Domain - freebsd.org X-AntiAbuse: Originator/Caller UID/GID - [923 923] / [47 12] X-AntiAbuse: Sender Address Domain - infnet.pl X-Mailman-Approved-At: Thu, 22 Jul 2010 12:24:07 +0000 Cc: Subject: Question about SiS package X-BeenThere: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: X11 on FreeBSD -- maintaining and support List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 22 Jul 2010 12:03:14 -0000 Hello I have a question about xf86-video-sis package for FreeBSD. The device is seen by usbconfig(8) as: ugen1.4: at usbus1, cfg=0 md=HOST spd=LOW (1.5Mbps) pwr=ON but I can't find anything in ports, that mentions "UC-LOGIC"... After upgrading to FreeBSD-8.1 and Xorg-7.5, I started having a strange problem with X11. Things start up fine, but after short while both firefox and thunderbird begin showing simple straight lines instead of rows of text (both in the menus and in text widgets). The pictures on web-pages would not repaint either. The KDE's (KDE-3.5.10) taskbar also loses all icons and text -- and becomes simply gray. If I click, where I remember the application's button is on the taskbar, I can still restore/minimize the window or start a new instance, however. The xterms don't have this symptoms -- text inside the xterm windows is just as visible/usable as it was. Restarting Xorg is the only "solution" so far... I increased the max shared memory to: kern.ipc.shmmax=536870912 kern.ipc.shmall=163840 but the problem didn't go away... Any ideas? Thanks! -mi
