Here's the message, along with a patch that fixes a couple of other problems. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Thu, 17 Feb 2011 08:17:39 From: Warren Block To: keramida@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: docs/154837: [patch] update Handbook for writing memstick image with Windows On Thu, 17 Feb 2011, keramida@FreeBSD.org wrote: > Synopsis: [patch] update Handbook for writing memstick image with Windows > > State-Changed-From-To: open->closed > State-Changed-By: keramida > State-Changed-When: Thu Feb 17 09:20:55 UTC 2011 > State-Changed-Why: > Committed, in revision 1.417 of handbook/install/chapter.sgml > > Thanks! > > http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=154837 The patch didn't quite apply as planned; there's a duplicate section at the start of the FreeBSD procedure (two warnings, and the sysctl line). Possibly due to the original having changed since the patch was created. Two other notes: the Windows section warns about the H: drive shown in the example, which is not actually shown, and the link should probably go to the project page, not a direct download that may be outdated. The following patch applies to the latest source to correct these three things. --- en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/install/chapter.sgml.orig 2011-02-17 08:07:54.000000000 -0700 +++ en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/install/chapter.sgml 2011-02-17 08:12:24.000000000 -0700 @@ -644,17 +644,6 @@ may destroy your existing data. - Set the kern.geom.debugflags sysctl to be - able to write a master boot record to the target device. - - - The example below - lists /dev/da0 as the - target device where the image will be written. The SVG version relies pretty heavily on SVG filters, so most applications will probably not be able to display it correctly. I know that Firefox at least is missing some important features required to display the logo. In fact even Inkscape, which I used to modify the logo in the first place, has a hard time displaying the logo. As a result, the logo does not look exactly like the original. That being said, I created a high resolution PNG with the logo as best as Inkscape can render it. http://streambag.se/files/FreeBSDlogo.png Hope you find it useful. In this section I see sample command: # sysctl kern.geom.debugflags=17 but I can't understand why this kernel tunable should be 17? If I will look through the /usr/src/sys/geom/geom_kern.c I will see this: "... The firefox plugins directory for 3.6 appears to be /usr/local/lib/firefox3/plugins and /usr/local/lib/browser_plugins doesn't exist. Also, I had to run nspluginwrapper -v -i /usr/local/lib/firefox3/plugins/libflashplayer.so to install it, since -a didn't seem to look in the global plugins directory. I guess avoiding the symlink step and just using the original file would work too. -- Bruce Cran From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Feb 25 02:00:09 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6819B106564A for ; Fri, 25 Feb 2011 02:00:08 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Received: from wonkity.com (wonkity.com [67.158.26.137]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1C0F58FC1E for ; Fri, 25 Feb 2011 02:00:07 +0000 (UTC) Received: from wonkity.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by wonkity.com (8.14.4/8.14.4) with ESMTP id p1P2059F016516; Thu, 24 Feb 2011 19:00:05 -0700 (MST) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Received: from localhost (wblock@localhost) by wonkity.com (8.14.4/8.14.4/Submit) with ESMTP id p1P205hJ016513; Thu, 24 Feb 2011 19:00:05 -0700 (MST) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Date: Thu, 24 Feb 2011 19:00:05 -0700 (MST) From: Warren Block To: Bruce Cran In-Reply-To: <1298586886.3150.7.camel@core.nessbank> Message-ID: References: <1298586886.3150.7.camel@core.nessbank> User-Agent: Alpine 2.00 (BSF 1167 2008-08-23) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed X-Greylist: Sender IP whitelisted, not delayed by milter-greylist-4.2.6 (wonkity.com [127.0.0.1]); Thu, 24 Feb 2011 19:00:05 -0700 (MST) Cc: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Outdated instructions in the Handbook for installing Flash? Actually /usr/local/lib/browser_plugins is still used for firefox plugins: % ls -al /usr/local/lib/browser_plugins total 48 drwxr-xr-x 4 root wheel 512 19 fév 17:47 . drwxr-xr-x 70 root wheel 43008 25 fév 09:46 .. drwxr-xr-x 2 root wheel 512 19 fév 17:20 gecko-mediaplayer lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 60 19 fév 17:47 libflashplayer.so -> /usr/local/lib/npapi/linux-f10-flashplugin/libflashplayer.so drwxr-xr-x 7 root wheel 512 19 fév 17:20 symlinks as you can see gecko-mediaplayer installs its directory there. /usr/local/lib/browser_plugins is not created by Firefox installation, so if you just installed Firefox and you try to install Flash, you'll have to create that directory. So I'd prefer to add a note on the need of (the creation) this directory instead of changing/removing the whole section. -- Marc From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Feb 25 11:34:45 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8D920106566C; Fri, 25 Feb 2011 11:34:45 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from brucec@muon.cran.org.uk) Received: from muon.cran.org.uk (unknown [IPv6:2a01:348:0:15:5d59:5c40:0:1]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2DC228FC12; Fri, 25 Feb 2011 11:34:45 +0000 (UTC) Received: by muon.cran.org.uk (Postfix, from userid 1001) id 323B0E8171; Fri, 25 Feb 2011 11:34:38 +0000 (GMT) Date: Fri, 25 Feb 2011 11:34:37 +0000 From: Bruce Cran To: Marc Fonvieille Message-ID: <20110225113437.GA2042@muon.cran.org.uk> References: <1298586886.3150.7.camel@core.nessbank> <20110225085806.GA8711@emphyrio.blackend.org> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20110225085806.GA8711@emphyrio.blackend.org> User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.21 (2010-09-15) Cc: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Outdated instructions in the Handbook for installing Flash? Yours, The term is widely used this way outside of the FreeBSD community, despite the fact the first reference to it in online discussion that I have discovered was on a FreeBSD list. In fact, if anything, it would be more accurate to extend reference to the concept beyond the realm of operating systems and into other realms, rather than doing the opposite by limiting it to a particular bikeshed. On the other hand, I do not think either change -- nor keeping it the same -- would have any substantive effect on the quality of the document, and any debates that might arise would amount to little more than a quite ironic battle over the ultimate color of the bikeshed.
