If we've done the wrong thing, please let us know. there is nothing wirtten up yet but I think it's ok to give you my understanding of the current state of discussions of the future policy: no mirrors under *.freebsd.org not fully controlled by the project, seems to be a pretty good summary. We'll not make anyone immediately stop, as we still heavily rely on these mirrors (at least the ~40-ish% not out of date) in the old world order. Even afterwards, you'll still be able to happily provide mirrors, how could we stop you, but no "official" mirrors anymore. I think that's the direction we are heading; the reasons are many, not just outdated mirrors we can't do a lot about, but I guess it'll better if we write things up and properly do this as a "long term" thing. However before more mirrors, and only talking about mirrors at this point, will pop up, you might want to ponder a different FQDN, which is not a sub-domain of FreeBSD.ORG, right from the start maybe. /bz -- Bjoern A. I'm assuming this refers to the CVSup mirrors? cvsup.au.FreeBSD.org runs on the same machine. It is the only local FreeBSD CVSup server available to FreeBSD users in and around Australia and the South Pacific: it serves between 3GB and 10GB per day, but I guess it won't have to do that for much longer? I look forward to seeing official policy announced soon and the new infrastructure in place so that those of us who have been doing what we could, and, in some cases, more than we could really afford, to help the Project can get over it and move on. --=20 John Marshall --liOOAslEiF7prFVr Content-Type: application/pgp-signature -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.19 (FreeBSD) iEYEARECAAYFAlA8EMAACgkQw/tAaKKahKJH1ACfa7XfQ/MatM0I9jm8sIdfeb/H nV0An0acAWVu3duH7D2PS/bZiGIDxnbK =rhuE -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --liOOAslEiF7prFVr-- From owner-freebsd-hubs@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Aug 29 18:34:48 2012 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-hubs@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 979E91065675 for ; Wed, 29 Aug 2012 18:34:48 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from mirrors@tds.net) Received: from mail-wg0-f50.google.com (mail-wg0-f50.google.com [74.125.82.50]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 226568FC1D for ; Wed, 29 Aug 2012 18:34:47 +0000 (UTC) Received: by wgbds11 with SMTP id ds11so686599wgb.31 for ; Wed, 29 Aug 2012 11:34:46 -0700 (PDT) X-Google-DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=google.com; s=20120113; h=mime-version:date:message-id:subject:from:to:content-type :x-gm-message-state; bh=Vc/qPeilLr1dcPDxlVRiYjT3EwZOR7p+fCPX/T9s9KU=; b=EX+tfaVQGQmq6JLR4o5e1TeUoH0MtujcqjfXo7NiNZPf8pLQv1nb8IeDYCn3pnAu28 L0Vllwk6kf+yl79dHuluR3wN7LFwjvvEDcymuTwGKevITLMh36Do53NnI6ms+cFU4jad XUZbbl3wRZKQabWvHtAyJLOP+bYb/HcUkU/CTOmKVm3hqdlxnYDS6GqFr307zlnGnf2Q PRvk5nckhUK0W3aXaQQLSC8iUB4ZmCS9fFux4OeVFxVnr3rM4h0mhd+qZnOzd2Z+RiIv bWBv7+dZjOSh/GXxNVgs1v04S+fBPvfR2Nkw7YMFdcdJcL1twPBmbgcrNOzmBRRLspno zuag== MIME-Version: 1.0 Received: by 10.216.255.148 with SMTP id j20mr1310800wes.106.1346265286807; Wed, 29 Aug 2012 11:34:46 -0700 (PDT) Received: by 10.216.213.31 with HTTP; Wed, 29 Aug 2012 11:34:46 -0700 (PDT) Date: Wed, 29 Aug 2012 13:34:46 -0500 Message-ID: From: "mirrors tds.net" To: freebsd-hubs@freebsd.org X-Gm-Message-State: ALoCoQmpLrlZxRackyQg1JL5auGX7d/kQcp7xNtVZ2w4+g7I3iMvx1LM28Bmis+vfxN68oZKmwJH Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 X-Content-Filtered-By: Mailman/MimeDel 2.1.5 Subject: Cvsup & cvsupd on Linux X-BeenThere: freebsd-hubs@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: "FreeBSD Distributions Hubs: mail sup ftp" List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 29 Aug 2012 18:34:48 -0000 Hi list, I have had no success getting cvsup/cvsupd to work correctly on linux (I know I know...but that's what I'm stuck with) I have reached out to the folks at cm3, but they're busy. the cvsup page references using cm3 on Linux, so that is what I am doing. I can compile the binaries just fine, but when i run them they just hang after transferring an amount of data (sometimes it pulls down a bunch of info sometimes it hangs almost immediately) I then have to ctrl-\ for it to quit. When I run the daemon I connect to it fine and start to pull data down. However it stops after a period of time and then eventually i see an "inactivity timeout" Does anyone have experience and could shed some light on how to get this working correctly? Thank you. Given that the obvious intent of Bjoern's unofficial hint was to prevent the setting up of any more svn. mirrors, we have decided to go ahead and withdraw the svn.au domain name now, rather than waiting to be told, so that its withdwaral disrupts as few users as possible. So, svn.au.FreeBSD.org is gone. The closest official mirror for users in the Australian region is the one on the USA West Coast, an additional ~200ms away. svn://svn0.us-west.FreeBSD.org --=20 John Marshall --R3G7APHDIzY6R/pk Content-Type: application/pgp-signature -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.19 (FreeBSD) iEYEARECAAYFAlA/07UACgkQw/tAaKKahKIUvwCgmLUqH7Ru5Y/iULOqM1SHyKuL tIAAn02XWRy20999IBdS2PxhFJA6/wkM =ByaI -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --R3G7APHDIzY6R/pk-- From owner-freebsd-hubs@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Aug 30 22:41:20 2012 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-hubs@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 849B3106566B for ; Thu, 30 Aug 2012 22:41:20 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from simon@qxnitro.org) Received: from mail-iy0-f182.google.com (mail-iy0-f182.google.com [209.85.210.182]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3996B8FC1A for ; Thu, 30 Aug 2012 22:41:19 +0000 (UTC) Received: by ialo14 with SMTP id o14so5143780ial.13 for ; Thu, 30 Aug 2012 15:41:19 -0700 (PDT) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=qxnitro.org; s=google; h=mime-version:sender:x-originating-ip:in-reply-to:references:date :x-google-sender-auth:message-id:subject:from:to:cc:content-type; bh=kwmaMjxx0A425IwRDC2l4mpY+I9stW4S4eP/77E1xlQ=; b=iwtfWhZOpkNhH4zWO+m/WQs5ORrMI0mWd6T+4vuxgCF0MIRX6Y4QKU+O92ClHfg8GI ys5o7Hb80tRnBFc1tEuIM58uyaR58b5gdRvQs6XaJzG07l7LFT41P5EgcKXDETaz1aSW HgIY58geraqjhkScQYl9QwKLPYXU6NB6Kn7MQ= X-Google-DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=google.com; s=20120113; h=mime-version:sender:x-originating-ip:in-reply-to:references:date :x-google-sender-auth:message-id:subject:from:to:cc:content-type :x-gm-message-state; bh=kwmaMjxx0A425IwRDC2l4mpY+I9stW4S4eP/77E1xlQ=; b=lA7pFkpt9chYdHk+LB+/cdwv6ozZ/QZu01PjPOLz27cdUypoAo/IwDgcedPUHbyfGQ AVGRDETNOeUaJMxmEzDwdqLBKfqxOdtS/iTJRuk9+Xx+Dk11vDpiPGMqSh+GmS3n4XHW ZeUSkznNNw1zn58Kk681o6T1TTgxROSaoZyulWIzZ0yjt1ks7xPxbIN3dTPG9hw6wbNc 8OtIO5cZ/m+9ldfDMoCUKBAtj3wqSg6JLwsB/i7Cbqzo5s4P/Qv2QJMln8RUgLThvjF7 bb7WS/gpt+V1WCSJgg8yoT4xERftKj+ipwWBR55cAFrkMjBWIxVCmHFMoDb8V5xRSlL0 xW5g== MIME-Version: 1.0 Received: by 10.50.7.177 with SMTP id k17mr43767iga.27.1346366479181; Thu, 30 Aug 2012 15:41:19 -0700 (PDT) Sender: simon@qxnitro.org Received: by 10.64.102.104 with HTTP; Thu, 30 Aug 2012 15:41:19 -0700 (PDT) X-Originating-IP: [131.111.184.87] In-Reply-To: <20120830205725.GB61657@rwpc15.mby.riverwillow.net.au> References: <20120814090441.GB70119@rwpc15.mby.riverwillow.net.au> <20120828002848.GA26201@rwpc15.mby.riverwillow.net.au> <20120830205725.GB61657@rwpc15.mby.riverwillow.net.au> Date: Thu, 30 Aug 2012 23:41:19 +0100 X-Google-Sender-Auth: cyC27Ace1BtN5NO3bzmDx6NtV7k Message-ID: From: "Simon L. We are working on trying to formalize a policy but unfortunately most people involved are rather busy, and nothing is set in stone yet. At the moment very actively working on getting an EU site set up and after that APAC is the next region. We are very aware that latency to APAC, and probably Australia especially more so, is an issue. How much of an issue it is, I'm not quiet sure. If people are wondering why we are working on how to do mirroring differently, please see current status: http://www.mavetju.org/unix/freebsd-mirrors/ (cvsup is stat seems broken, but FTP still shows the general picture). PS. Just because we, at least at this point, prefer not to have svn*.CC.FreeBSD.org mirrors, doesn't prevent local users / user groups etc. to have unofficial but updated mirrors. -- Simon L. B. Simon refers to the very useful mirror monitoring site created and maintained by edwin@. I also maintain my own monitor for a much smaller subset of mirrors in which I have particular interest. Most of the mirror age information relies on some kind of regularly updated TIMESTAMP from the master which is replicated to each of the mirrors. That's easy with the FTP mirrors because ftp-master provides /pub/FreeBSD/TIMESTAMP. The nearest thing we had been able to find for CVSup mirrors was the timestamp in the $FreeBSD$ tag in CVSROOT-ports/modules, since a fresh version of that file was being generated most days. Since ports has moved to Subversion, the modules file has not been updated and I haven't been able to find a substitute "TIMESTAMP" that we can use to check the age of CVSup mirrors. I note that this wouldn't be a problem if it were possible to get at CVS history from a CVSup client. About the CVSup Modules, it seems that this it is not updated any more on the master, see [1]: modules 1.21550 7 weeks edwin Ports modules update at Monday 09 July 2012 at 00:09 Feature safe: yes [1] http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/CVSROOT-ports/ Also the DNS SOA check is not perfect. [1] http://www.mavetju.org/unix/freebsd-mirrors/dns-stats-cc.php?country=ch I have the following entries in ch.freebsd.org for MX, which does work perfectly to deliver e-mails: fabian@flashback:~ $ host -t mx ch.freebsd.org ch.freebsd.org mail is handled by 10 mail.home4u.ch. ch.freebsd.org mail is handled by 20 deja-vu.home4u.ch. ch.freebsd.org mail is handled by 30 deja-vu.ip6.home4u.ch. fabian@flashback:~ $ host mail.home4u.ch. mail.home4u.ch has address 62.12.173.2 mail.home4u.ch has IPv6 address 2001:8a8:1005:1::2 fabian@flashback:~ $ host deja-vu.home4u.ch. deja-vu.home4u.ch has address 62.2.85.178 fabian@flashback:~ $ host deja-vu.ip6.home4u.ch. deja-vu.ip6.home4u.ch has IPv6 address 2001:8a8:1005:2::178 @Edwin, is this something which could fixed in the tests with also doing a look up for AAAA entries? This does even work when the system doing the check does not use IPv6. bye Fabian
