X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 06 Dec 2013 21:38:36 -0000 Hello! I'm reading 5.5.1. Getting Started with pkgng of the handbook and I'm using fresh installation of FreeBSD-9.2-RELEASE-i386. I've installed pkg port 1.1.4 from /usr/ports/ports-mgmt/pkg and have run pkg2ng. It is mentioned in the handbook, that adding WITH_PKGNG is needed to be added to /etc/make.conf. It may turn out that by default this file does not exist, so it must be created manually or be copied from /usr/share/examples/etc/make.conf or elsewhere. Same thing about /usr/local/etc/pkg.conf. It may turn out that by default there is /usr/local/etc/pkg.conf.sample only. So, pkg could not find pkg.conf with PACKAGESITE variable, prints 'Updating repository catalogue' and bails out silently without telling any reason of such behaviour. Moreover, maybe it will be good to mention about pkgng wiki. After running 'pkg update' and 'pkg install curl' (as it is shown in the example), pkg proposed to update from 1.1.4 to 1.2.1. As I can see, config format in pkg 1.2 has changed. And pkg 1.2.1 does not like empty pkg.conf file, while it is fixed in 1.2.2. And the last, there is no pkg.freebsd.org, as it is provided by default in pkg.conf. As I know, this repo was wiped out. There is pkgbeta.freebsd.orgnow and some repo at pc-bsd for amd64. Maybe something of this is worth mentioning in the docs. Thanks for attention! If it's real, it should be in the synopsis and description. -q No-op, does nil, nothing, nada. Emphatically not for compatibility with GNU bc, but coincidentally allows scripts from icky other platforms where -q does something to run without error. May occasionally print "gravy-sucking pig-dog" or contain traces of soy, nuts, eggs, titanium, and riboflavin, all part of a really interesting alibi. An undocumented option is a > bug. If we don't want people using it we should document as such. Well, no, it's not an undocumented option but a bug-for-bug compatibility shim. However as Warren pointed out, it's a bug having it in synopsis and usage. This is fixed in r259058. With our limited manpower, I think it's more important to improve our documentation in the direction that we describe our stuff better, like how to write a vt(4) driver, etc. rather than documenting the bug-for-bug features which would just give the reader an impression like "I can write program according to GNU command line standard and expect the BSD people to diligently implement bug-for-bug compatibility". For my part, my own opinion is that if there is a desire not to confuse people who still do rely on man pages, then perhaps it would be best to exhibit some consistancy, and also remove mention of the -q option from the SYNOPSIS section of the relevant man page. (This would not be _my_ first choice, but at least it would be consistant.) Regards, rfg
