QjackCtl doesn't show the ADAT IOs of the HDSPe AIO. I tested the analog output and it does work. This screenshot does expire in one week: http://picpaste.com/Screenshot_-_011313_-_20_38_57-LG5yOsWx.png OT: Not only the order of the playback ports is strange, the Qt GUI does behave odd, e.g. most of the times everything is black inside the connection window. I'll try to send the screenshot as attachment by another mail. I'll read about FreeBSD and ALSA ASAP. I wonder that I had to disable real-time, since for Linux at least minimal real-time is available even by a vanilla kernel. The sound quality of pro-audio apps will suffer without SSE support. To produce music only 48 KHz is needed, but floating point is important. At this time I am not sure which of these two settings has fixed the issue, but I've changed the following: # /boot/device.hints hint.hdac.0.msi="0" # /etc/sysctl.conf dev.hdac.0.polling=1 So far so good, no driver crashing until now =). I will do further testing to find out which of these did the trick :). I noticed some mistakes in the Wiki, but won't edit it, since I'm a newbie and I might be mistaken. 1. snd_hdspe is missing in https://wiki.freebsd.org/Sound 2. The Envy24 chip is ICE1712, not 1724 http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=snd_envy24&manpath=FreeBSD+8-current On my system there are two ICE1712 cards, TerraTec EWX 24/96, on Linux used as jitter free MIDI devices and one RME HDSPe AIO, on Linux used as audio and MIDI device. As the first step I want to get RME audio working. I can start jackd with oss and the two analog IOs are available, but I want to get the 8 ADAT IOs available. Jack doesn't work with alsa and I don't know what to do. As having to depend on gcc 4.6+ on i386 is kindof a waste on 9.1+ where we have clang too, and clang might generate better code than the old gcc 4.2.1 in base on amd64 anyway I thought what if we have the vlc port default to using clang on 9.1+ when it's available? So I propse the patch below for testing by anyone on 9.1 or later, also on i386 where I can't test myself, please report any issues or regressions you find. Thanx! It is known to be broken on clang. However, setting USE_GCC=any appears to be insufficient: the too-clever configure glop sees that clang is installed and attempts to use it regardless. This commit is thus a temporary measure. Hat: portmgr I'll Cc the x264 port maintainer, maybe he knows more. >I am currently also trying to figure out why VLC itself won't build with >clang, but pulls in lang/gcc for some CPU features (as I saw in the >makefile) .. hopefully that can be fixed. Compiling gcc is not a fast >task. There was an issue with base gcc and vlc on i386 so I set USE_GCC=4.6+ - but you are right if clang is already built using it would be preferred, and I just posted a call for testing for a patch that defaults to using clang on 9.1+ also on amd64: http://docs.freebsd.org/cgi/mid.cgi?20130119210903.GA76282 (you can use `Save link as' on the `Raw E-Mail' link at the top of the message to download the patch, patch(1) should ignore the rest of the message before the actual patch.)
