I recently got a SunFire V210 which should be fairly similar to yours. It's working fine. (I've got a single CPU only though.) I tried to make it less noisy, with moderate success. The trickiest part was to have the power supply accept a lower speed fan, because the PS evaluates the fan speed internally by itself with some analog circuitry. Unfortunately, as cool as the idea of the ALOM appears at first, with a standby power of ~ 15 W, you'd better power it off with a hardware switch while you don't need it. -- cheers, Joerg .-.-. --... ...-- -.. . Actually, I'm using a 1200 MHz CPU with the exact same mainboard in a 280R, however: root@e280r:/root # ofwdump -P model / Node 0xf0029e54: SUNW,Sun-Fire-280R model: 53 55 4e 57 2c 35 30 31 2d 35 39 33 38 00 'SUNW,501-5938' root@e280r:/root # dmesg | grep cpu0 cpu0: Sun Microsystems UltraSparc-III+ Processor (1200.00 MHz CPU) For that matter, I'm also running FreeBSD on a V440 but given that I added support for that model, I'm not sure whether I count :) Marius From owner-freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.ORG Sun May 19 23:24:20 2013 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.FreeBSD.org [8.8.178.115]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 736FCF1B for ; Sun, 19 May 2013 23:24:20 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from marius@alchemy.franken.de) Received: from alchemy.franken.de (alchemy.franken.de [194.94.249.214]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EDC9AE19 for ; Sun, 19 May 2013 23:24:19 +0000 (UTC) Received: from alchemy.franken.de (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by alchemy.franken.de (8.14.6/8.14.6/ALCHEMY.FRANKEN.DE) with ESMTP id r4JN4jvT030646; Mon, 20 May 2013 01:04:45 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from marius@alchemy.franken.de) Received: (from marius@localhost) by alchemy.franken.de (8.14.6/8.14.6/Submit) id r4JN4jB2030645; Mon, 20 May 2013 01:04:45 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from marius) Date: Mon, 20 May 2013 01:04:45 +0200 From: Marius Strobl To: Riccardo Veraldi Subject: Re: prtfru on freebsd ? LOM is the "lights out monitor", a device that is already active during standby, and is able to poweron/poweroff the machine remotely. It operates on the standard console serial port, alternatively with the normal system console. ("console" in LOM enters sytem console mode, "#." goes back to LOM.) On the SunFire machines, the old LOM has been implemented as ALOM (advanced lights out monitor), which takes longer to boot :), and offers some more features like network access. It requires a password to be accessed, and the password policy is very strict. If the password is not known, the only way to set it to a known value is through a Solaris command. I don't think you can enter a kernel name at the (A)LOM level. Even on the OBP prompt, the name of the kernel to enter is IMHO not being propagated into FreeBSD's boot environment. I didn't have trouble booting a FreeBSD CD-ROM on my SunFire V210, but offhand, I can't tell which exact version I have been using to install the machine. -- cheers, Joerg .-.-. --... ...-- -.. . Not that I'm aware of. FreeBSD is known to run on V480 - which essentially should be the same as V490 just with US-III CPUs - and FreeBSD is known to work with US-IV+ CPUs. So it's very likely that FreeBSD 9.1 will run on a V490 with US-IV+ CPUs out of the box, i. e. the possibilities are good, but there are no guarantees. I can only mount the root filesystem forcing it. that is bad because the root FS is unusable and the machine can't boot. how can I fix it ?
