There are two things I'd like to point out, though. 1) A few terms/phrases were not so easy to translate me. When in doubt, I tried to remain consistent with my previous translations of the Leap Seconds and NanoBSD articles. This is a list of the translations that were a bit of a problem and what I translated them to. - source tree -> arbol de codigo fuente - release engineering -> ingenieria de lanzamientos - testers -> testers - bleeding-edge -> bleeding-edge - handbook -> manual - strings attached -> restricciones - bug / bug fix -> error / correcci=C3=B3n de errores - production quality -> calidad de producci=C3=B3n - tunable -> variable - resource locks -> primitivas de sincronizaci=C3=B3n - mirror (left untranslated) - unstripped kernel (left untranslated) 2) Some phrases feature wordplays that are impossible to translate into spanish. I translated them anyway, but the result can be confusing IMHO. Examples are: - How cool is FreeBSD? -> Translated as "=C2=BFQue tan fr=C3=ADo es FreeBSD= ?" (In spanish we don't have a distinction between cool as in "not warm" and cool as in "awesome"). - Why is it called FreeBSD? -> I believe this can create confussion because we have two separate terms. Free as in "free beer" translates to "gratis" and free as in "free speech" translates to "libre". I don't know if it is possible to add a small note to the translation to clarify the wordplay, but I think it would help matters. The current translation diff can be seen at: https://reviews.freebsd.org/D5153 . Thanks! But for translations the most important part is the translation of the meaning not the word itself. Instead of "cool" try the translation of "awesome", "excellent" or just "good". I would even consider "fantastic", because in german it refers to something exceptional good (another phrase) and something not real. Not sure what is more common in english or spanish. If you are still in doubt, if your translation is correct, do a short test. Grep another spanish-speaking person in the near (no need for them to speak english) and let them read your translation. Afterwards (!) ask them what they understand. If they get it right, your translation is a good basic to start :) Hope this helps. Chapter 4.5 "Using the Ports Collection" discusses portmaster in an inappropriate way, e.g. "recommended tool for upgrading installed ports". = I do not believe this is accurate (in other words, is it really recommended? if= so, it must be officially maintained). I suggest the following: 1) remove all references to portmaster from chapter 4.5 2) add a new section either after 4.5 or after 4.6 (poudriere) that describ= es how to maintain using Synth, which has gotten a lot of testing recently. You have a tool presented as "official" that hasn't had it's original maintainer in 4 years and was only kept on life support up until 9 months a= go. In my world, this is a *COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE* situation. What other s/w is documented yet unmaintained in FreeBSD?=20=20 There seems to be a feeling that having portmaster unmaintained is ok, and = that portmaster has no bugs. I think neither is the case. In my world, there are two options: 1) officially support portmaster 2) remove it from documentation This suggestion, "let's just add a footnote that it's not maintained" is not good one, nor it is a professional one. Where is the motivation to save this particular piece of software coming fr= om?=20 And why the pro-portmaster people not maintaining it (assuming they have the ability?) finally, if getting it out the documentation initiates it removal out the p= orts collection, I could go for that. Howver, right now, it doesn't *deserve* t= o be in the documentation because it as fallen below acceptable maintenance level and I hope everyone realizes that. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Fri Feb 5 10:56:56 2016 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 13835A9C976 for ; Fri, 5 Feb 2016 10:56:56 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from pawel.wierzbicki.pl@gmail.com) Received: from mail-wm0-x22e.google.com (mail-wm0-x22e.google.com [IPv6:2a00:1450:400c:c09::22e]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256 (128/128 bits)) (Client CN "smtp.gmail.com", Issuer "Google Internet Authority G2" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id A3B551449 for ; Fri, 5 Feb 2016 10:56:55 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from pawel.wierzbicki.pl@gmail.com) Received: by mail-wm0-x22e.google.com with SMTP id r129so21207050wmr.0 for ; Fri, 05 Feb 2016 02:56:55 -0800 (PST) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=20120113; h=mime-version:date:message-id:subject:from:to:content-type; bh=m5URNNyQv9t4MzcVUCITTMIiHrPc9iwXFmXKObgB+Ls=; b=OfPZyKkroTffDLfMOAd4ZHR9UVT0uXR7gAyd+8jQpeCoqOCX364mPFJQH5Y7zaVWne YDsiTgWpSXUKh9LAIiw7srAPGqfwzfL6e8qYfFlNPy65D3cTCNHn1TmafmWzcUPJFsq4 D8uhbMAbZzl+OuasfZFS++8ZqvOcpXtfn3VhjQFz276h/O+9nyL/FPyElBMhVhVC+OJy je2DaDcfsHsOSnXDUX6zqQhrT7do0Ow362FxaGUpsQR02HJe7+yyFwGi8XE3gZe+adC8 ZITcnI5SSp57wwS4jU18gGCiFaWv0c7yKgfXFo1t9CetecVWtYoOipeB9fzYNn2sxg/V Kicw== X-Google-DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=1e100.net; s=20130820; h=x-gm-message-state:mime-version:date:message-id:subject:from:to :content-type; bh=m5URNNyQv9t4MzcVUCITTMIiHrPc9iwXFmXKObgB+Ls=; b=As4SJWoN6fwhkYQgUIg3gDIhO3wWNI8aF3yQh89rp16ppdnZO21jVQZS666gohAmns RwvmXjBH+gY+FTYy/mmSY1RuwhA1jyOjmCJcSuZTGhUhKhqC4/kg/8hfmQAdKuNFwFz5 sbXziVx3xulEn2cLPrndNLMUsr5ExiZJE4uRQdVt5gwjhTvf0xgVDfKMgejnsJHfUmd3 K182iTmBt143doLMUatqbzthPuEDcclAHr3+AJzKkfB5wXrzh9TsSp1j1458XIEocJur mlcTYKruW2ZWICDCVif4iik1w3lM8NUXZ+CVbIgmJrKfd4ncLTKvqIAjIsWgmC80EAFE CB/A== X-Gm-Message-State: AG10YOTyiYyIQ49WcjOCIF/Rr8cdiNOdG5N4ELxaMC/k0HOoiuuRWNAF2raFIWP50YoKl1wHDlvqGO5vlaPJxg== MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Received: by 10.194.201.134 with SMTP id ka6mr13330397wjc.116.1454669813729; Fri, 05 Feb 2016 02:56:53 -0800 (PST) Received: by 10.27.177.157 with HTTP; Fri, 5 Feb 2016 02:56:53 -0800 (PST) Date: Fri, 5 Feb 2016 11:56:53 +0100 Message-ID: Subject: Quick question about handbook template From: =?UTF-8?Q?Pawe=C5=82_Wierzbicki?= To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Content-Filtered-By: Mailman/MimeDel 2.1.20 X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.20 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 05 Feb 2016 10:56:56 -0000 Hello! Package builders like poudriere and synth do not compete in the same space, with higher overhead in dependencies, configuration, disk space, build time, and user interface. As far as maintenance, nobody wants to maintain dense shell script. (The reasons for portmaster being in sh are debatable in their own right, but not relevant to this discussion.) Until there is a close replacement, or portmaster is no longer functional, removing it from the documentation is premature. That is not a statement on the desirability of the situation, just an instance of BSD pragmatism. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Fri Feb 5 14:59:19 2016 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 88361A9A9CD for ; Fri, 5 Feb 2016 14:59:19 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 611C39AD for ; Fri, 5 Feb 2016 14:59:19 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from bugs.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id u15ExJwF038517 for ; Fri, 5 Feb 2016 14:59:19 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 206922] Handbook: Chapter 4.5+ changes Date: Fri, 05 Feb 2016 14:59:19 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Documentation X-Bugzilla-Component: Documentation X-Bugzilla-Version: Latest X-Bugzilla-Keywords: X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Only Me X-Bugzilla-Who: marino@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Status: New X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.20 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 05 Feb 2016 14:59:19 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D206922 --- Comment #4 from John Marino --- (In reply to Warren Block from comment #3) "At present, portmaster still has no direct competition. It is a no-dependencies shell script. portupgrade is the closest thing, but Ruby a= nd ruby-bdb dependencies cause trouble on upgrades." 1) I disagree about the competition 2) it's irrelevant. You can't recommend it officially and not have it maintained, period. "As far as maintenance, nobody wants to maintain dense shell script. (The reasons for portmaster being in sh are debatable in their own right, but not relevant to this discussion.)" Au contraire, it's the heart of the discussion. No maintainer, get it out = of the documentation ASAP. "Until there is a close replacement, or portmaster is no longer functional, removing it from the documentation is premature. That is not a statement on the desirability of the situation, just an instance of BSD pragmatism." It has a man page, it doesn't need to be in the freebsd handbook. ################################################ There is a serious catch-22 going on. The portmgr doesn't want to deprecate it as long as it is in documentation,= and the docs guys don't want to remove it as long as it is in ports.=20=20 Both desires cannot exist. you do NOT want new users of portmaster in this state. You are not doing t= hem any service as all. Why is the concept even a discussion? How can you RECOMMEND non-maintained buggy software in the official handbook? Whether or not it has competition= is irrelevant. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Fri Feb 5 16:05:09 2016 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8B877A9B17B for ; Fri, 5 Feb 2016 16:05:09 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Received: from wonkity.com (wonkity.com [67.158.26.137]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client CN "wonkity.com", Issuer "wonkity.com" (not verified)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 5C52A15C9 for ; Fri, 5 Feb 2016 16:05:09 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Received: from wonkity.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by wonkity.com (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTPS id u15G57P5065032 (version=TLSv1.2 cipher=DHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 bits=256 verify=NO); Fri, 5 Feb 2016 09:05:07 -0700 (MST) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Received: from localhost (wblock@localhost) by wonkity.com (8.15.2/8.15.2/Submit) with ESMTP id u15G57HT065029; Fri, 5 Feb 2016 09:05:07 -0700 (MST) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Date: Fri, 5 Feb 2016 09:05:07 -0700 (MST) From: Warren Block To: =?ISO-8859-2?Q?Pawe=B3_Wierzbicki?= cc: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: Quick question about handbook template In-Reply-To: Message-ID: References: User-Agent: Alpine 2.20 (BSF 67 2015-01-07) MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Greylist: Sender IP whitelisted, not delayed by milter-greylist-4.4.3 (wonkity.com [127.0.0.1]); Fri, 05 Feb 2016 09:05:07 -0700 (MST) Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8BIT X-Content-Filtered-By: Mailman/MimeDel 2.1.20 X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.20 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 05 Feb 2016 16:05:09 -0000 On Fri, 5 Feb 2016, Paweł Wierzbicki wrote: > Hello! > > I just wanted to ask, if the "FreeDSD Handbook" is generated using some > sort of a template or is it written by hand? The question is not quite clear. The Handbook and other FreeBSD documents are written by hand in DocBook XML, then output formats like HTML and PDF are rendered from the sources. > I ask, because I want to make similar, but much smaller handbook, and I'm > looking for something I could use. The FreeBSD documentation system is described here: https://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/fdp-primer/
