It does not provide accelerated graphics, and is missing some features like brightness adjustment and support for external displays, but it works just fine on built-in laptop displays for simply desktop use and even playing videos. To get it working: 1. Boot to a console (ensure X is installed as per the handbook, but not running) 2. Install the x11-drivers/xf86-video-scfb port/package: # pkg install xf86-video-scfb 3. Remove the x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel port/package: # pkg remove xf86-video-intel 4. Unload the i915 and i915kms kernel modules: # kldunload i915 # kldunload i915kms 5. Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf to remove anything related to intel graphics. The only section of the file you should need is the following: Section "Device" Identifier "Card0" Driver "scfb" EndSection 6. Start X and enjoy your laptop graphical display (even if it is not accelerated). This is the default if you boot using UEFI, but not if you boot using (legacy) BIOS mode. You can check which console you are using using: $ sysctl kern.vty On my laptop, I have to boot using UEFI mode to get this to work at all; if I try to boot using BIOS mode but with that sysctl manually set to use vt(4) it doesn't work on my laptop. Your Intel NUC may be the same. https://man.freebsd.org/vt https://wiki.freebsd.org/Newcons Regards, Ben --=20 -- From: Benjamin Woods woodsb02@gmail.com From owner-freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Wed Feb 3 20:03:52 2016 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7AAECA9B5A4 for ; Wed, 3 Feb 2016 20:03:52 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from stefan.wendler@tngtech.com) Received: from zimbra.tngtech.com (zimbra.tngtech.com [212.204.93.107]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 3D4AF10D2 for ; Wed, 3 Feb 2016 20:03:51 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from stefan.wendler@tngtech.com) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by zimbra.tngtech.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6955EB006A8; Wed, 3 Feb 2016 20:54:42 +0100 (CET) Received: from zimbra.tngtech.com ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (zimbra.tngtech.com [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10032) with ESMTP id ysoYIUiJllMo; Wed, 3 Feb 2016 20:54:42 +0100 (CET) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by zimbra.tngtech.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1A658B006C1; Wed, 3 Feb 2016 20:54:42 +0100 (CET) X-Virus-Scanned: amavisd-new at tngtech.com Received: from zimbra.tngtech.com ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (zimbra.tngtech.com [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10026) with ESMTP id cs7T6tlVrRuP; Wed, 3 Feb 2016 20:54:42 +0100 (CET) Received: from [10.0.0.20] (p4FE577CA.dip0.t-ipconnect.de [79.229.119.202]) by zimbra.tngtech.com (Postfix) with ESMTPSA id DF904B006A8; Wed, 3 Feb 2016 20:54:41 +0100 (CET) Subject: Re: drm-i915-update-38, no output on high resolution display To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org References: <20160119103527.GA59551@seth> From: Stefan Wendler X-Enigmail-Draft-Status: N1110 Message-ID: <56B25AFF.1000300@tngtech.com> Date: Wed, 3 Feb 2016 20:54:39 +0100 User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; FreeBSD amd64; rv:38.0) Gecko/20100101 Thunderbird/38.5.0 MIME-Version: 1.0 In-Reply-To: <20160119103527.GA59551@seth> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=windows-1252 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-BeenThere: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.20 Precedence: list List-Id: X11 on FreeBSD -- maintaining and support List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 03 Feb 2016 20:03:52 -0000 I can reproduce this. I started enabling ValleyView in drm2 and faced some problems. Target device: Acer E3-112 laptop. Celeron N2840. VGA: pci0:0:2:0, 0x0f318086 HOST-PCI: pci0:0:0:0, 0x0f008086 I use these docs as reference: https://01.org/linuxgraphics/documentation/hardware-specification-prms Particularly these two documents: 1. This one for ValleyView PCI configurations space registers https://01.org/sites/default/files/documentation/intel_os_gfx_prm_vol11_-_gfx_interface.pdf 2. And this one for Haswell PCI configurations space registers to compare because Haswell already exist https://01.org/sites/default/files/documentation/intel-gfx-prm-osrc-hsw-pcie-config-registers.pdf I enabled my device id in dev/drm2/drm_pciids.h dev/drm2/i915/i915_drv.c And turned on "i915_enable_unsupported" variable. And faced kernel crash with following problem: Fatal trap 12: page fault while in kernel mode device_get_softc() at device_get_softc+0x4/frame 0xfffffe023131c3c0 intel_gtt_get_bridge_device() at intel_gtt_get_bridge_device+0x11/frame 0xfffffe023131c3d0 i915_driver_load() at i915_driver_load+0x3ac/frame 0xfffffe023131c550 drm_get_pci_dev() at drm_get_pci_dev+0x436/frame 0xfffffe023131c5b0 drm_attach_helper() at drm_attach_helper+0x13f/frame 0xfffffe023131c600 i915_attach() at i915_attach+0x53/frame 0xfffffe023131c610 device_attach() at device_attach+0x41d/frame 0xfffffe023131c670 So I figured out I need to get agp working. I added device id to dev/agp/agp_i810.c Nothing happens, some debugging revealed that all functions: agp_sb_check_active() agp_sb_get_stolen_size() agp_sb_get_gtt_total_entries() and others that in order call pci_read_config() and read pci registers from bridge device, always return zeros. I checked constants in dev/agp/agpreg.h All Sandy Bridge constants for config registers match those in documents for HSW and VLV mentioned above. So I don't know what's causing the problem. I'm running dev kernel on EFI booted machine with xorg and xf86-video-scfb. Hi! Thank you for tracking this problem down! An issue was created on GitHub: https://github.com/freebsd/freebsd-base-graphics/issues/4 I have a similar problem with an UltraHD monitor plugged to a Haswell desktop and I get a blank screen when using the native resolution. FullHD works. -- Jean-Sébastien Pédron From owner-freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Sat Feb 6 00:50:24 2016 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5AAADA9E754 for ; Sat, 6 Feb 2016 00:50:24 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from jean-sebastien.pedron@dumbbell.fr) Received: from mail.made4.biz (mail.made4.biz [IPv6:2001:41d0:2:c018::1:3]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 2AF2C1EF3 for ; Sat, 6 Feb 2016 00:50:24 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from jean-sebastien.pedron@dumbbell.fr) Received: from [176.158.145.63] (helo=[192.168.75.14]) by mail.made4.biz with esmtpsa (TLSv1.2:ECDHE-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256:128) (Exim 4.86 (FreeBSD)) (envelope-from ) id 1aRr4w-0005s3-GX for freebsd-x11@freebsd.org; Sat, 06 Feb 2016 01:50:22 +0100 Subject: Re: Does FreeBSD support OpenGL 3.3? Hi! I'm already working on an update to the i915 driver, based on Linux 3.8. It includes preliminary ValleyView support (but disabled by default). The code and instructions are available on the wiki if you want to test: https://wiki.freebsd.org/Graphics/Update%20i915%20GPU%20driver%20to%20Linux%203.8 Now, if you want to contribute, that's awesome! Right now, I'm tracking the issue described here: https://github.com/freebsd/freebsd-base-graphics/issues/2 Bug reports and fixes for already supported GPUs (up to Ivy Bridge) are more than welcome! Don't worry, this is the correct place :) > info: [drm] radeon: 16M of VRAM memory ready > ... > info: [drm] fb depth is 8 By default, the Radeon driver selects a depth of 8 bpp for the console when the GPU has only 16 MB of video memory: https://github.com/freebsd/freebsd-base-graphics/blob/master/sys/dev/drm2/radeon/radeon_fb.c#L328-L330 I suppose it does that to keep some free memory for the X.Org server. You could try to force a mode for the console using a tunable (so in /boot/loader.conf). Configuration: LVDS + 2 displays on HDMI2 and HDMI3 Kernel booted just fine, XDM and X.org started without problems. All 3 displays were configured properly. First thing I did after login was # chgrp wheel /dev/dri/* # dumpon /dev/da0 /dev/da0 is a kingston USB stick, I do NOT have a swap partition on my laptop (because of reasons). After I started games/openarena, the computer froze showing the first frame of the OpenArena startup cinematic. There was no core dumps, no escape to kernel debugger; just froze. Computer stopped responding via LAN. Question: if the kernel crashed, should it not have generated a core dump? Have I set all relevant configurations properly to get core dump with this kernel? I rebooted with stock FreeBSD 10.2 kernel, did savecore -C /dev/da0, but it found no cores. Saved all relevant configuration files and logs. Logs are available at: http://koti.kapsi.fi/~isoa/kernel.i915/logs-2016-02-06T23:12:08.tar.xz Next thing I am going to try is configure SoL so that I could figure out what the kernel was doing before system freeze. NOTE: according to the logs the kernel.i915 boots at Feb 6 23:02:46 ... just FYI -- Arto Pekkanen
