I set vm.pageout_oom_seq=3D120 and buildworld using -j 1 completed OK. I presume the problem was I/O latency related. I have a swap file on a USB stick which might be slow. During the build only 3% of my 1Gb of swap was u= sed. We use virtio throughout.
