Ok, so "next week" turned into "six weeks later", but I now have a new AMI: ami-0629bc11fede58e9e (us-east-1 region). This should correct the issues Ben noticed with my earlier attempt: * The ZFS mounts should now match the installer default. * I've added some settings to loader.conf and sysctl.conf. * If you launch the AMI with a >10 GB disk, it will resize the zpool to use the available space. (This uses the /etc/rc.d/growfs update which I committed on Friday.) Please try this AMI and let me know if you find any more issues. Once everything is working I'll publish the AMI in all the public EC2 regions and blog about the process I used to create this. -- Colin Percival Security Officer Emeritus, FreeBSD | The power to serve Founder, Tarsnap | www.tarsnap.com | Online backups for the truly paranoid From owner-freebsd-cloud@freebsd.org Tue Feb 12 02:25:02 2019 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-cloud@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6E9AE14CE974 for ; Tue, 12 Feb 2019 02:25:02 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from julian@freebsd.org) Received: from vps1.elischer.org (vps1.elischer.org [204.109.63.16]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client CN "vps1.elischer.org", Issuer "CA Cert Signing Authority" (not verified)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id D37206868D for ; Tue, 12 Feb 2019 02:25:01 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from julian@freebsd.org) Received: from Julian-MBP3.local (c-73-225-95-163.hsd1.wa.comcast.net [73.225.95.163]) (authenticated bits=0) by vps1.elischer.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTPSA id x1C2Ovui065618 (version=TLSv1.2 cipher=AES128-SHA bits=128 verify=NO); Mon, 11 Feb 2019 18:24:59 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from julian@freebsd.org) Subject: Re: Any plans for EC2 AMIs with RootOnZFS? But FreeBSD needs it in order to work around a limitation in how EFS tracks open files. -- Colin Percival Security Officer Emeritus, FreeBSD | The power to serve Founder, Tarsnap | www.tarsnap.com | Online backups for the truly paranoid From owner-freebsd-cloud@freebsd.org Sat Feb 16 10:12:25 2019 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-cloud@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5FB7414DE544 for ; Other system configuration matches the FreeBSD 12.0-RELEASE AMIs published by the release engineering team. I had to make one substantive change to 12.0-RELEASE, namely merging r343918 (which teaches /etc/rc.d/growfs how to grow ZFS disks, matching the behaviour of the UFS AMIs in supporting larger-than-default root disks); I've MFCed this to stable/12 so it will be present in 12.1 and later releases. If you find these AMIs useful, please let me know, and consider donating to support my work on FreeBSD/EC2 (https://www.patreon.com/cperciva). If there's enough interest I'll work with the release engineering team to add ZFS AMIs to what they publish. - -- Colin Percival Security Officer Emeritus, FreeBSD | The power to serve Founder, Tarsnap | www.tarsnap.com | Online backups for the truly paranoid -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iF0EARECAB0WIQTq9Iu6fMd6MP78Dak4zsppDGpqbgUCXGfh+wAKCRA4zsppDGpq bo4pAJ0bYhG1mJ6kJtni9nPTm+yJWRdZDwCfSoiR1U1iJ0spCzagNOHuw9dlLh8= =7eVA -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- From owner-freebsd-cloud@freebsd.org Sat Feb 16 15:10:35 2019 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-cloud@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8FB4F14E9F92 for ; Sat, 16 Feb 2019 15:10:35 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from pgollucci@p6m7g8.com) Received: from mail-vs1-xe35.google.com (mail-vs1-xe35.google.com [IPv6:2607:f8b0:4864:20::e35]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256 (128/128 bits)) (Client CN "smtp.gmail.com", Issuer "Google Internet Authority G3" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id A95828E2FA for ; Sat, 16 Feb 2019 15:10:33 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from pgollucci@p6m7g8.com) Received: by mail-vs1-xe35.google.com with SMTP id z18so7242347vso.7 for ; Sat, 16 Feb 2019 07:10:33 -0800 (PST) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=p6m7g8-com.20150623.gappssmtp.com; s=20150623; h=mime-version:references:in-reply-to:from:date:message-id:subject:to :cc; bh=2SC+C5aE3AT3Tuu7pg5XdHmsELda7ZVv8M1uud8CJJE=; b=vTtSTVwLIy6Xo5OiGDNGZsj9x7sbGq9RzgkHDd9XsXx7QIh7fUZsWfzCOsIxLWjDBF SkwS3XoL47Q8AnoP2Qn5f+hghZ0GlZVQMsBEhnBttLzhdQM/flOF79P68UIrApHfR3L3 BkGTSGZgGiknyHjIqxH6sWOUxcCxHMhAuj2+SE7Ulgcv24MaRSRg52WULy3Jg8wClYol IN+Mw25nR5dtoVlByB4Yf+RACjgTRZhJrG4z0tMzGm+UGFPS6sfFmVvVTy5KiIKM91kq yXIVK9rAGxi4btU0PGKzSQ3I7wrG40TcffXIgraP6kCDWkKvMdW84gRN2CRebzA6eey9 pxkA== X-Google-DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=1e100.net; s=20161025; h=x-gm-message-state:mime-version:references:in-reply-to:from:date :message-id:subject:to:cc; bh=2SC+C5aE3AT3Tuu7pg5XdHmsELda7ZVv8M1uud8CJJE=; b=GVSSpPlFFU4zrMn7FpeJmT16Q6YwKNzAVmW4oo/O23OWiDgiB1ISP6O6BwXPhayfxC XG6wH/M/SkXsEzy7QH9d9u7sTM33yKlGhHVMWbGj5UXecRNeWllGPXrFbVbook0X+PbR cR+JyYKZJglXxa+z1I8/15uzklg8YIiiFrl2CYvTt1LbVCaGax3Z2FBIXvMsQR5Vz2Ch qyCXxG5WTmsykcyJ7zNW4w0Bha6IVCuH/bXRCeT2JXv/mhcTHa4W2EU6dkHRYE1cG3gR xxOERv7ckUwV3b6BnhwprchZ1qoHW8+QSocyptHYK6cG/Dqh45bXAiF9gam5mNeA5u3z EDxw== X-Gm-Message-State: AHQUAubEBbtA/BIgc0UHnBem0zJOYmAiqhIWuVEkDrvmVeIUU/mEZqAn YD5rz2kjI0JcxZde359uh776NVgxlktfK45XyUIKww== X-Google-Smtp-Source: AHgI3IYlJxIEZNhCHH6AvmhZf5oXjGNOxnse3sIq+Mp7/VP0mNozpHpReEaVEjvKtT1Kaso8LOCoyP9PA3J82aD1bhg= X-Received: by 2002:a67:f814:: with SMTP id l20mr7678217vso.71.1550329832817; Sat, 16 Feb 2019 07:10:32 -0800 (PST) MIME-Version: 1.0 References: <01000168f5cad864-47f026f0-37b6-479a-bfb0-c46ec189c929-000000@email.amazonses.com> In-Reply-To: <01000168f5cad864-47f026f0-37b6-479a-bfb0-c46ec189c929-000000@email.amazonses.com> From: "Philip M.
