In addition, there is a KVM running pfSense based on FreeBSD 11.2-RELEASE-p3 acting as firewall. The firewall has a physical interface that is connected to the external network and a virtual network card that is connected to the internal container network, using MACVLAN Docker-side, so each container has its own IP address, but all of them are on the same subnet. For security reasons, the containers need to be isolated and shall not be able to communicate with each other principally (just with the external network). For this, MACVLAN is configured in VEPA mode, which allows traffic from and to the parent device, but not to other addresses on the same parent device. Now, I would like to allow specific traffic between specific containers, using pfSense as router, considering the configured firewall rules. However, I cannot seem to get this scenario working. As it looks like, FreeBSD drops each packet on the virtual network card targeting a host on the same subnet (if the destination is on the same segment as the origin segment). I assume this is the standard behaviour if hairpinning (or reflective relay as some call it) is not activated, because in theory the receiver has already had a chance to see the frame - but has not in this case. Is there any option to activate hairpinning for a bridge (as for instance the 'hairpin' switch for a Linux bridge) or, better (as it requires no bridge), disable this behaviour for a specific interface? Might there be another reason for this behaviour? Jaenke --- This does surprise me somewhat as the performance is definitely NOT as expe= cted based on other comparative benchmarks. I think this may actually be a severe CPU performance regression. The processor involved is an Atom E3845 @ 1.9GHz. Using Passmark as a base = for comparison, we should expect performance to be approximately 55-60% of an A= tom C2758 SoC, within margin of error on AMD GX-412HC (PCEngines APU2 w/i210,) = and approximately 3x faster (minimum) than an AMD G-T40E (PCEngines APU1 w/Realtek.) This should reasonably apply to both forwarding and firewalling throughput. Looking at BSDRP's results to establish reasonable expectations, what we instead see is the E3845 managing a peak throughput rate roughly comparable= to the AMD G-T40E. Missing the expected mark by 40% or more. Whereas switching to the i3-7100U (slightly faster than the C2758) results = in a GREATER than 100% immediate performance gain (likely quantifiable as more t= han 150% total.)=20 Based on that, I think this might actually be exposing some flavor of regression. Independent benchmarks of various E3845 appliances running 11.2= put the expected numbers for firewalling NAT at 800-900Mbps with no tuning (and encrypted traffic at a whole 300Mbps best case with the CPU completely pegg= ed.) What was observed was 500-600Mbps with <50% total CPU utilization. (I had seen some freebsd.org bug report referrals in my Github repo's traffic analytics) In my experience, the netgraph configuration in pfatt can max out a single = core when reaching gigabit speeds. In some cases, the single core performance of= the process can handle it. In other cases, it cannot and speed suffers. In the case of another user, their C2758 CPU wasn't getting full gigabit performance. Upgrading to a beefier E3-1230v6 got them the full line speeds. When being throttled by the CPU, I see a high percentage of interrupts (relative to core count) against the NIC via systat -vmstat. Setting net.inet.carp.senderr_demotion_factor=3D0 makes CARP no longer react this w= ay to individual up/down of underlying lagg interfaces. Instead I just get "carp: demoted by 0 to 0 (send error 50 on vlan18)", and no CARP change. As for this "send error 50", I assume 50 is ENETDOWN, so for some reason the lagg driver signals this for a brief moment while changing it's setup. Not = sure how to proceed in hunting down the root cause for that, but this is not rea= lly a super critical setup, mostly doing this for experimenting. For the record, the other end is a HP 1820-24G (J9980A) and the lagg config= is "laggproto lacp laggport ix0 laggport ix1 laggport ix2 laggport ix3" (unrelated carp rambling below:)=20 Regarding why it did not automatically come back when net.inet.carp.preempt= =3D0, it's of course by design.. In carp(4) DESCRIPTION section for this sysctl (= and on when googling it and reading up on it a bit, and studying the carp sourc= e) it's clear that it is actually a way to make it more aggressive in enforci= ng that the node with the lower advskew is always MASTER. With =3D0 it won't g= o in until it stops seeing the current master, regardless of advskew. In the EXAMPLE section of carp(4) the same option is described as a way to = make multiple interfaces change state at the same time, so I had missed the above fact: "When one of the physical interfaces of host A fails, advskew is demot= ed to a configured value on all its carp vhids. Due to the preempt optio= n, host B would start announcing itself, and thus preempt host A on both interfaces instead of just the failed one."=20 One thing about the text above which almost bit me (as in thinking it was n= ot behaving as expected) was this:=20 If I (on the current master with lower advskew) deconfigured a VLAN from the LACP VLAN trunk of current master, the other node no longer sees the masters announcements, and takes over as master. This only happened for that partic= ular VLAN though, and that confused me.. Doesn't the EXAMPLE say that it should affect all all interfaces when preempt=3D1? Yes, for *ifdown* events... In this scenario it just stopped seeing any incoming traffic in that VLAN... so ofcourse it did not demote the other interfaces, which it would have done with the value of net.inet.carp.ifdown_demotion_factor if the interface actually went down.. Sorry for my rambling, but perhaps someone else (or me, when I have forgott= en the details) might stumble upon it in the future and can benefit from it! --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-net@freebsd.org Thu Apr 11 10:03:12 2019 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-net@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5C7DD157FC22 for ; Thu, 11 Apr 2019 10:03:12 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (mailman.ysv.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::50:5]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E4A9B87465 for ; Thu, 11 Apr 2019 10:03:11 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) id 9E141157FC1F; Thu, 11 Apr 2019 10:03:11 +0000 (UTC) Delivered-To: net@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8AE25157FC1E for ; Thu, 11 Apr 2019 10:03:11 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org (mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:3]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-digest SHA256) (Client CN "mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org", Issuer "Let's Encrypt Authority X3" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 2516987463 for ; Thu, 11 Apr 2019 10:03:11 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 601CDED44 for ; Thu, 11 Apr 2019 10:03:10 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id x3BA3AlL059017 for ; Thu, 11 Apr 2019 10:03:10 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: (from www@localhost) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2/Submit) id x3BA3Aea059016 for net@FreeBSD.org; Thu, 11 Apr 2019 10:03:10 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) X-Authentication-Warning: kenobi.freebsd.org: www set sender to bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org using -f From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: net@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 237197] ipnat dropping connections after upgrade to 11.2 Date: Thu, 11 Apr 2019 10:03:10 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: kern X-Bugzilla-Version: 11.2-RELEASE X-Bugzilla-Keywords: needs-qa, regression X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Only Me X-Bugzilla-Who: koobs@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Status: Open X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: net@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: keywords bug_status assigned_to short_desc Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-net@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.29 Precedence: list List-Id: Networking and TCP/IP with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 11 Apr 2019 10:03:12 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D237197 Kubilay Kocak changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Keywords| |needs-qa, regression Status|New |Open Assignee|bugs@FreeBSD.org |net@FreeBSD.org Summary|ipnat NAt failures |ipnat dropping connections | |after upgrade to 11.2 --- Comment #1 from Kubilay Kocak --- @Mike If you could include the full network configuration of the system (as attachments), that would be appreciated.=20 Please sanitize where necessary (openvpn authentication details, ip's, etc).
