Both the editied file and GENERICAH fail with the same errors, syntax errors in vm_map.h. I have not installed any of the patches on ref.tfs.com; none of them appear to have anything to do with vm_map.h. To compile GENERICAH I did a "config GENERICAH", cd to the compile/GENERICAH directory, did "make depend", and then a "make". The system has been running 386BSD and FreeBSD 1.1 for quite a while. The GENERICAH kernel works fine, so far. I couldn't find this in the FAQ; the BUGS entry in the www.freebsd.org is currently broken. My first guess is that something wierd happened during the installation, so will re-install unless this is something simple. I think that question would best be asked to the SwiM folks. I *think* SWiM is a Motif development kit, but depending on what exactly they ship and what format it is depends on if it will work. That question can best be answered by the distributor. Heck, they may have a version compiled for the platform you want. Mail works, but differently than before. Regarding question 2, I (fortuitously) messed up the path in /etc/csh.login while installing X11R6 and found that all /sbin commands went unrecognized also. Moral: FreeBSD-2.0 does not recognize executables unless a /uvw/xyz/.../bin path is specified in csh and the file is there *before* login. Perhaps one may override this? So far 2.0 looks fantastic !!! I can easily mount filesystems (bsd, msdos) from all drives, cdrom included. Packages are great too !!! I was using this feature before, however, and running PST on the internal cmos clock. I changed the cmos clock to UTC/GMT, and removed wall_cmos_clock, and re-directed /etc/localtime to /usr/share/zoneinfo/Canada/Pacific. I have noted, however, that the mode of localtime is 755, not 777, as the default localtime was set. A chmod 777 localtime seems to have no effect. As far as I can tell, the internal cmos UTC time should be automatically offset by -8 hrs to arrive at PST. Somehow it's being left as is, and UTC is showing up as PST on the machine. I am an experienced UNIX user, but not a system manager!! (I have completed the bindist install) (I am installing from the Walnut Creek CD) 1) There is no 'adduser' or 'useradd' functions. How do I create new accounts? Maybe this has something to do with my mount points: '/' '/usr' Do I require a '/usr/users' mount point? 2) My dos partition does not show up. I called it '/dostmp'. Does it have to be called '/dos'? This dos partition, does NOT contain DOS, just a DOS file system. DOS is located on a IDE drive which I disable when I want to boot FreeBSD (since it is the C drive) 3) When I try to install XFree86-3.1 from CD, it does the checksum verification, but when it says 'unpacking XFree86-3.1 distribution' it just hangs...hmmm 4) If I want to install X now without installing everything else, I use the /sbin/sysinstall script, but when it comes up, none of the mount points are known (disklabel)... Have I done something incorrectly? Thanks for the help, Paul ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Paul J.
