Just so some folks don't get suprised about Peters action here in the repository, he is my understudy for providing more support in the area of cvs repository management and has my approval to do these types of emergency repairs. I should still be the first line contact, but trust Peter's judgement on doing things in there like this. > Umm. did you panic and hit ^C during the import by any chance? Hummm.. I would like to know this too. As cvs should not have aborted on it's own and not sent out the mail. If it did we have a bug that needs to get fixed some place. > BTW, how long before that 24-hour grace period is up? It really is a 72 hour grace period for most direct repository operations (72 hours after being placed into the Attic that is). No direct repository operations should be done to files outside of the Attic as this can easily screw some one over who happens to have the file checked out and active. The reasoning I am using here is that if I place a file in the Attic, within 6 hours freefall will have removed it from /usr/src (or other auto updated areas.) Most other hosts at *.cdrom.com will have done it within 24 hours, and most folks supping the cvs bits will have done it within 72 hours. If I don't wait this amount of time folks have cvs updates that could potential fall over, which I know have happened in the past until I started using the grace period (heck it happened to myself 3 or 4 times before I got smarter about these things :-)). -- Rod Grimes rgrimes@gndrsh.aac.dev.com Accurate Automation Company Reliable computers for FreeBSD From owner-cvs-ports Tue Aug 8 10:16:46 1995 Return-Path: cvs-ports-owner Received: (from majordom@localhost) by freefall.cdrom.com (8.6.11/8.6.6) id KAA06267 for cvs-ports-outgoing; Tue, 8 Aug 1995 10:16:46 -0700 Received: from gndrsh.aac.dev.com (gndrsh.aac.dev.com [198.145.92.241]) by freefall.cdrom.com (8.6.11/8.6.6) with ESMTP id KAA06260 ; Tue, 8 Aug 1995 10:16:41 -0700 Received: (from rgrimes@localhost) by gndrsh.aac.dev.com (8.6.11/8.6.9) id KAA04204; Tue, 8 Aug 1995 10:16:22 -0700 From: "Rodney W. Did this change? Yes, this has changed midly for right now. Though I did not official tell Peter he could cut loose in the repository for major operations he does have my full blessing for emergency repair work, and he used good judgement here. A zero length file will only hurt things, rm'ing it was the only reasonable thing to do with it. > By the way, how did both of you manage to remove it successfully > without (at least) one of you getting an error message from rm? ;) He removed the file, I removed the whole tree with rm -r, he must have finished his command before my rm -r traversed that part of the tree. > * Umm. did you panic and hit ^C during the import by any chance? > > No...I know better than that. ;) I bit my lips and was looking at the > import progress report, and it just blew up by itself. Okay, looks like we have a bug to go find. I need to make some busy work for Peter so I can catch up with him on a few things anyway :-). Peter, see if you can reproduce the ``cvs import that barfs due to permission errors and creates a bogus ,v file in the repository'' bug and fix it. > * BTW, how long before that 24-hour grace period is up? > > The import was right before my "Argh!" mail. By the way, I was just > copying Rod in the 24-hour thing.... To reiterate what I said in other email so Peter knows when I start this clock it is _72_ hours from the time of the commit that places the file into the Attic. For a damaged file like the above case the time limit becomes 0 and the rule broken that says it must be in the Attic before the remove since you can't check it out to put it in the Attic :-) I broke the rule (as stated in my reply to Satoshi) and rm -r the work tree that was accidentally imported since it was placed into the Attic within minutes of the import operation. To others, if you blow an import of any kind, please, as soons as possible after the error cvs remove all the files, this cuts the grace period as it minimized the chance that some place actually checked out the bad copy of the files and does not require me to do that step later when cleaning up. This is especially true if you import to the wrong location, as then you can go reimport to the right location without waiting for me, and I can come along and clean up the bad import the next day without any fuss. [I often save 2 or 3 of these up and do them in bulk when I am wide awake, and have a fresh repository backup incase I blow an rm -r some place :-)] -- Rod Grimes rgrimes@gndrsh.aac.dev.com Accurate Automation Company Reliable computers for FreeBSD From owner-cvs-ports Tue Aug 8 14:51:03 1995 Return-Path: cvs-ports-owner Received: (from majordom@localhost) by freefall.cdrom.com (8.6.11/8.6.6) id OAA16893 for cvs-ports-outgoing; Tue, 8 Aug 1995 14:51:03 -0700 Received: (from torstenb@localhost) by freefall.cdrom.com (8.6.11/8.6.6) id OAA16881 ; Tue, 8 Aug 1995 14:50:47 -0700 Date: Tue, 8 Aug 1995 14:50:47 -0700 From: Torsten Blum Message-Id: <199508082150.OAA16881@freefall.cdrom.com> To: CVS-commiters, cvs-ports Subject: cvs commit: ports/news/inn Makefile Sender: cvs-ports-owner@freebsd.org Precedence: bulk torstenb 95/08/08 14:50:45 Modified: news/inn Makefile Log: the patches has been moved to another directory... Actually, it is really a min(72, whenever_someone_gets_around_to_it) grace period. The average is many years. I'm still waiting for removal of Attics created by the July 13 ports reorganization. Why? Several reasons.... (1) pkg_delete can't delete the subdirectory registered by fake-pkg if it's only the directory name. (And don't go fix it to use rm -r, there *might* be user files added after installation.) (2) Makes it harder to accidentally include some post-installation addition. I learned my lesson when I shipped my private dictionary with the Wnn port. ;) I'm actually thinking of adding --norecurse to the tar command line. That will solve the above problems by forcing PLIST writers to list all the files. Also, writing PLIST will simply be a matter of "find ." .... :) (It doesn't work now because you have to exclude directories...but have to list empty directories separately....etc.) Satoshi From owner-cvs-ports Wed Aug 9 07:43:03 1995 Return-Path: cvs-ports-owner Received: (from majordom@localhost) by freefall.FreeBSD.org (8.6.11/8.6.6) id HAA15472 for cvs-ports-outgoing; Wed, 9 Aug 1995 07:43:03 -0700 Received: (from asami@localhost) by freefall.FreeBSD.org (8.6.11/8.6.6) id HAA15450 ; Wed, 9 Aug 1995 07:42:54 -0700 Date: Wed, 9 Aug 1995 07:42:54 -0700 From: Satoshi Asami Message-Id: <199508091442.HAA15450@freefall.FreeBSD.org> To: CVS-commiters, cvs-ports Subject: cvs commit: ports/lang/bwbasic - Imported sources Sender: cvs-ports-owner@freebsd.org Precedence: bulk asami 95/08/09 07:42:52 Branch: lang/bwbasic 1.1.1 Log: The Bywater Basic interpreter.
