Before we go balistic here, can we just take a DEEP breath ? I have not "provided" anything to anybody at this stage. I have checked it into our CVS-tree, >>> which already contains the sources <<<. OK, feel better ? As to how this is to be provided, and what measures we have to take to comply with the ($#^#&$%@&ing) GPL, is to be determined. I will have no problems checking out the source code for this, (cvs co -t RELEASE20) during the "make release" and include it in the "compat20" if that is the solution. -- Poul-Henning Kamp -- TRW Financial Systems, Inc. Uhh, you are wrong about that one. They are *very* anal and retentive about it since they want *everyone* to be able to get the exact source that created the binaries. The Minix folks find this out when Bruce made the 1.X binaries available for minix-386 and the archive sites only kept the binaries and the diffs. The GNU folks said they were required to keep the sources online as well even though the sources could be gotten from other sites. The reasoning was the other sites would delete the old sources when the new versions came on line (similar to us deleting 2.0 when 2.1 comes on line). Those folks who get a 2.1 CD will not have the sources for libgcc.so.262.0 at their beck and call. Who says that the folks enforcing the GPL are blind, especially given the antagonistic nature at times between the 'BSD-style Copyright' vs the 'GNU-style copyright'. Just restore the previous libgcc Makefile and use it to create libgcc.so.261.0 as before and change it to put less objects in libgcc.a This only works because libgcc*.c hasn't changed since before FreeBSD-2.0R. If it had changed earlier then we would have already fought this battle. I'm worried about the same problem for our own libraries. I don't like having to keep old library binaries that I can't rebuild. If we were less sloppy about incrementing the library version numbers then we might have already fought battles over this. There might be dozens of versions and shared libraries occupying more space than they save in executables. (I cannot cut&paste, so here is the gist of it:) # od -x fixit.flp 0000000 0000 0000 ... # vnconfig -c /dev/vn0 fixit.flp # fsck /dev/rvn0 ** /dev/rvn0 ... 151 files .... # I belive that with the merged vm/buffer, it may make more sense if vn uses the vn_rdwr() instead of the VOP_BMAP/VOP_STRATEGY interface. one way or another, it's hosed now on my machine... -- Poul-Henning Kamp -- TRW Financial Systems, Inc.
