Rather than having a fixit floppy be a stand-alone boot floppy with emasculated command set due to space crunch, make boot floppy a filesystem of nice utilities and *no* kernel. The idea is that you boot the standard boot floppy and choose the "Fixit" item off the top menu. It then asks for and mounts the fixit floppy, adds the mount point to $PATH and then forks a shell with the inherited PATH. You can use the shell to traipse around the filesystem, tweaking things as desired. Mutate the useless shell option in first menu to far more useful fixit. Fix the bogus `ifconfig sl0' case once and for all with a special case hack for cuaa0. gpalmer: Fix benign-yet-bogus incorrect `password' to anon ftp sites. joerg: Allow cpio to guess at input format again. It's not a royal pain, but I'm also trying to minimize the changes I make to sysinstall at this stage so that I don't break something in between snapshots and final release. How do other folks feel about this? If there's enough general feeling that the level of "detail" provided on the debug screen should be so configurable, I'll add it. Humm... in that case I think ``I'' would rather see this switched back to doing the dots things, as at least then I had a chance to see an error in the output, as a by file name type listing will quickly scroll any type of error off the debug screens. You can implement the "", "-v", "-V" option as a 2.2 feature addition. > How do other folks feel about this? If there's enough general feeling > that the level of "detail" provided on the debug screen should be so > configurable, I'll add it. I guess my major concern was that the verbosity of cpio -v is going to make it impossible to catch errors occuring during the extract process :-(. At least -V fills the screen slowly enough (even when extracting from very fast media like 4X cdrom or 100BaseTX NFS) that you can catch file write errors or other strange things that can sometimes occur during the extraction process. cpio -v with fast setups makes the screen a blur of file names :-). On another sysintstall related output issue, just where do kernel messages go??? I made a small mistake the other day while playing with sysinstall and assigned two systems the same IP address, well, the kernel message didn't show up on either of them saying that someone had claimed there IP address and it took me about 15 minutes to figure out what had gone wrong and why the install that had happily been running along suddenly just hung :-(. Are these kernel messages perhaps buried behind the main install screen running on ttyv0??? If so, as a 2.2 feature, would it be possible to leave ttyv0 in text mode and run that screen on another vty? > Jordan -- Rod Grimes rgrimes@gndrsh.aac.dev.com Accurate Automation Company Reliable computers for FreeBSD From owner-cvs-user Sat Sep 30 14:34:40 1995 Return-Path: owner-cvs-user Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.6.12/8.6.6) id OAA18462 for cvs-user-outgoing; Sat, 30 Sep 1995 14:34:40 -0700 Received: from time.cdrom.com (time.cdrom.com [192.216.222.226]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.6.12/8.6.6) with ESMTP id OAA18437 ; Sat, 30 Sep 1995 14:34:28 -0700 Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by time.cdrom.com (8.6.12/8.6.9) with SMTP id OAA21534; Sat, 30 Sep 1995 14:34:15 -0700 To: "Rodney W.
